Darrell, glad to have you; but we have no self promotion no matter how innocuous it might be.

I have taken the liberty to adjust your intro so that you would not have to redo it. Also, Darrell no links to any personal reviews or personal links, etc. Thanks.

From Darrell

Hi, I just joined because I love history, read history, review history books, write historical fiction, lived in Europe for 20 years, where history waits on every street corner (as it does here in DC of course). Look forward to reading, posting, sharing

Bea | 1830 comments Hi -

I'm looking forward to participating in the discussion. I was a history minor in college. I retired a couple of years ago from the U.S. State Department where I was a Foreign Service Officer. I served in London, Montevideo, Port Moresby and Helsinki. My last assignment in Washington was on the Canada Desk.

I'm interested in history of all kinds. I also love a good biography.

My goals for 2012 are to read 52 books from the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list and at least 20 other non-fiction books.

The latest book I read that I can highly recommend to this group is Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea.

Jill H. (bucs1960) Welcome Bea to the history lovers corner.
Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. The books you mentioned should look like this:
1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die by Peter Boxall by Peter Boxall (no photo available)
Nothing to Envy Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick by Barbara Demick Barbara Demick

Jim Hi,

I'm an American expat living in France. I live in the Dordogne River valley which has more history than I can wrap my mind around, so I'm joining this group to start my reading. I plan on looking at prehistory for Cro-magnon era, medieval history (I'm a few minutes away from Beynac and Castelnaud), and general French history. Plenty of books available here in French, but my reading skills are not developed enough to understand history books. So for now, I'll be looking for English language books for these topics.

Jim

Brandon (bswans) Hi,

I'm a senior in my last semester of high school. I love American history, especially anything that has to do with its war periods, especially the American Civil War. I specifically enjoy stories of operations on the front; not necesarily military politics. I am also learning about government and I am finding that it intrigues me.

Hello,

I live in Yorkshire, England, and have recently joined this group to learn about new books to read on history. All history fascinates me and I'm willing to read up on just about everything, particularly on anything regarding the British Empire. I studied History at the University of Hull and since graduating close to four years ago now I've come to miss the research and the discussions. So I'm looking to delve back into this.
Any recommendations are always welcome, as are discussions.

Thanks

Louise

Kelly (kmkell84) | 3 comments Hello,

My name is Kelly and I live in Sacramento, California. I was a history major in college and especially enjoyed learning about medieval and English history. As I now work in a completely unrelated field (public relations for the State of California), I don't spend as much time reading history as I would like. I am excited about this group and think that the online format will lend itself well to my busy schedule. Topics that I am interested in: medieval history, Anglo-Saxon England, British royalty, history of California and the old West, Thai & South East Asian history.

Thanks,
Kelly

Lesley | 1 comments Very excited to find this book group. I find that in my local book group I am the person tending who chooses nonfiction books with a focus on history or current events but the group is more focused on fiction, so the reading material covered by this group is of great interest.

I work in higher education and live in PA with my family which in addition to my husband includes two children--one a teen who has inherited my love of reading and a 9 y/o who also loves to read. We also have two labrador retrievers---one a discard from our neighbors and another monster dog--not in temperament but in size (he was a small puppy the pound estimated to mature at 40 lbs---two years later after recovering from being starved and abandoned weights 110 lbs but thinks he is a small chihuahua).

I love travel and reading and although it has been years, spent two years living in China and London.

Ashley | 4 comments I was very excited to find this group. I'm very interested in certain historical areas such as World War II, and European history throughout the centuries as it was what I went to college for. (although besides increasing my interest in history, has not resulted in a career!) I join this group to be able to join the discussions and get some reading recommendations. Both fiction and nonfiction.
