Amy (amybf) | 5 comments Hi everyone! My name is Amy and I'm a recent member of both Goodreads and this group. I am thrilled to have discovered the site -- I have been telling everyone I know that "it's like Facebook for smart people!" Love it. I'm a native New Englander -- grew up in Connecticut, lived in Massachusetts for 14 years, and am currently back in Connecticut. Probably comes as no surprise, then, that I have a deep interest in early American history! I also enjoy reading about British history and Roman and Greek history as well. In terms of the personal stuff, I'm an editor/writer for a university; I've been happily married to my college sweetheart for 20 years; and we have two sons, one of whom will hopefully be accepted into college and move out within the next year. :) I look forward to reading and participating in discussions!

message 3710: by Gabriel (new)

Gabriel Hello. My name is Gabriel. Because my parents got an encyclopedia for my brother one christmas it had biographies about all the Presidents in one book. It was about 5-10 pages on each President, but ever since then I have been hooked on history. The curse or blessing of reading history has even included my job as an educator.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Amy and Gabriel and welcome to the group. I am sure you will find a lot here to keep you both interested.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

This is how a book that you mention in a post should look:

1812 The Navy's War by George C. Daughan by George C. Daughan

Alessandra | 12 comments Hello. I'm Alessandra Kelley, and I'm terrible at writing introductions.

I like history. My profession is fine artist / illustrator and sometimes teacher. My husband is an author (science fiction and science fact). We live in Chicago within shouting distance of the incredible bookstores at the University of Chicago.

I have a fairly wide interest in many kinds of history, including cultural, artistic, and social issues. While I have read and adore
The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman Barbara W. Tuchman Barbara W. Tuchman and
The Embarrassment of Riches An Interpretation of Dutch Culture in the Golden Age by Simon Schama Simon Schama Simon Schama, I also enjoy art history, clothing history, food history, the history of science, and odd bits of esoterica and ephemera. I'm interested in world history, ancient history, recent history, and archeology. I've read the esoteric histories of
Eros and Magic in the Renaissance (Chicago Original Paperback) by Ioan P. Couliano Ioan P. Couliano and
The Night Battles Witchcraft & Agrarian Cults in the Sixteenth & Seventeenth Centuries by Carlo Ginzburg Carlo Ginzburg, the economic histories of
The Great Crash 1929 by John Kenneth Galbraith John Kenneth Galbraith John Kenneth Galbraith, and on-the-spot histories of
Up Front by Bill Mauldin Bill Mauldin Bill Mauldin and
Domestic Manners of the Americans by Fanny Trollope Fanny Trollope. My historical interests shift around.

I'm not much interested in historical fiction, although I enjoyed Daniel Defoe's "Journal of the Plague Year."
A Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe Daniel Defoe Daniel Defoe

But yeah, I like history.

Hello Alessandra and welcome - Jill did provide you with a few helpful links. However, we do have rules for citation and the books you cited need to be added according to our guidelines. Let me show you how they should look:

A Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe by Daniel Defoe Daniel Defoe

When mentioning or posting about authors aside from a book discussion thread about one specific book; you must also cite the author by adding the author's photo and the author's link which is his or her name in linkable text.

This is the way they would look:

Barbara W. Tuchman Barbara W. Tuchman

Bill Mauldin Bill Mauldin

Frances Trollope (no photo)

John Kenneth Galbraith John Kenneth Galbraith

Carlo Ginsburg (no photo)

Ioan P. Culianu (not found in goodreads) - spelling was incorrect

SCHAMA SIMON (no photo)

I hope that I have added the correct authors; Culianu was misspelled so I tried to correct it for you.

Here is the link to the Help Desk which can help you get started:

Hello Alessandra,

I went into a lot of detail in message post 3834 and I included a link which if you go to it will explain everything in excruciating detail.

You have to cite and add the book cover (it is usually available), then the author's photo (when available) and also then the author's link which is the author's name in linkable text.

Look at post 3834 and go to the Help Desk link at the bottom.

Remember, this is how a book should look: (book cover, author's photo, author's link) not the links you added in 3839.

Elizabeth the Queen The Life of a Modern Monarch by Sally Bedell Smith by Sally Bedell Smith Sally Bedell Smith

Hope this helps; it takes 10 seconds at best and you will be able to do this easily in no time at all. Since this is the welcome thread and for intros - I deleted your post 3839 to avoid clutter.

message 3750: by Alessandra (new)

I'm sorry for my initial formatting troubles -- a special thank-you to Jill and Bentley, who gave me everything I needed to fix them. I look forward to exploring the history book club and history with the rest of you, and I shall try to be less of a nuisance.
