Hi, Krystal,

I just saw your message, thank you for such a sweet Croatian welcome :-D
If you haven't ever been in Croatia, I hope you will, not so much for exploring your roots although that's undoubtedly a fun way to spend a vacation ;-), but more to enjoy the sightseeings, both natural and cultural.

Cate (catemb) | 1 comments Hello there!

My name is Catherine Elizabeth (most people call me Kate). I'm a 29-year-old Canadian currently living in England. How I ended up here is quite a long story... So I won't bore you with it!
I have a degree in Psychology but intend to go back to school to study environmental sciences, which really is a passion of mine.

I've always been very interested in history and I know is mostly due to the way I was brought up. My dad was adopted at birth. When I was around 4-5, he searched to find information about his biological parents and discovered that his "mother" was Native American (Innu) and is "father" was Irish. I remember enjoying learning more about his origins and all the information he could find about it. He taught me to be very proud of my roots. So from a very young age I started reading about Native American and Irish history and all that is surrounding it.
Obviously my interest is wider than that now, but that's how it all started!

Anyway, I am fairly new on goodreads and I am ever so glad I found it!

Have a lovely Sunday!

Hi Catherine Elizabeth and Thom, welcome to the group!
Apart from all the terrific book discussions we also have a set of threads on music (all kinds from all places).
Please come and take a look and listen. You'd be surprised at what you'll find there.
Best wishes,
André

Catherine Elizabeth,

please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how books should look:

Parting the Waters America in the King Years, 1954-63 by Taylor Branch by Taylor Branch Taylor Branch

Please take a moment to read our guidelines:

message 3460: by Grace (new)

Grace (gcamp) | 2 comments Hi! My name is Grace and I am new to the History Book Club. I love history, especially American History. I also like to read biographies. I have never been a member of a book club before, so I would appreciate any pointers. For instance, how do I know what book is going to be next on the list, so that I can get a copy in my hands? Is there a lot of discussion about the book? Are we allowed to make suggestions for the choice of books being read? Any information or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.

message 3461: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Grace, glad you found the group and decided to join. There are many discussion threads and the home page for The HIstory Book Club should indicate books that are currently being read as wel as upcoming selections. There are usually a few going on simultaneously so plenty to choose from.

As to the helpful links, as you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. Welcome Karen - where are you on the East Coast (New England, Middle Atlantic States or the South).

You have found a good group here because all of us love history and non fiction books; although we dabble in historical fiction too.

If you love the Colonial era, there are great spots to visit in Massachusetts including Concord and Lexington, Salem, Boston itself and the Freedom trail, etc.

If you like Military History or Naval History, you will probably get to know our Assisting Moderator - Aussie Rick.

Enjoy the group and thank you Bryan for providing Karen with some very helpful links so that she can start off on the right foot.

message 3492: by Dana (new)

Dana Arbelaez (danas_reads) | 4 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Dana, and I'm a born-and-raised resident of San Diego, CA. I've loved books longer than just about anything else, though I've spent the better part of the last ten years as a gigging musician. When not working on music, I can usually be found with my nose in (several) books. =)

Besides music and books, I love to travel ( I like to call it "going adventuring"), spend time outside, and as much as possible just enjoy life.

I love reading about history, because not only does it stimulate and teach, but it gives food for thought in SOOO many directions, and I find myself thinking in broader, more rounded ways every time I finish a book.

I'm a newlywed/works-from-home, and am currently expecting my first child! All that being said, I've lately found myself with more down time than usual, so I'm tackling my "to-read" pile and getting more involved with group reads.

Looking forward to future conversations!

I like reading books, especially books that open. I enjoyed being part of the HBC previously, and look forward to participating again.

I live in Greenwood, Seattle with two cats, across the street from a really rocking senior center, but I'm not a senior and don't get invited to the parties.
