'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Marjorie and welcome to the group and I hope you enjoy discussing your favourite period of history with other members.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

This is how the books you mentioned in your post should look:

Washington A Life by Ron Chernow by Ron Chernow Ron Chernow

The Warmth of Other Suns The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson by Isabel Wilkerson

Tim (timh1952) Hello everybody,

my name is Tim, I am 59 and live in Gloucester UK. I have always loved History except for a three year period during high school when I had a particularly bad history teacher. After that I decided that if school wasn't going to teach me the subject then I would do it myself. I particularly enjoy military history (I served in the army a number of years) with a focus on the American Civil War. That said I have read a lot of stuff on other periods and countries, and also enjoy reading social history.
I will probably not contribute too much at first, unless of course someone hits on a favourite subject of mine.

message 3296: by Bryan (new)

Thank you Brian. The teacher in question's idea of teaching history was to give us a chapter of the text book to read and then test us on it the following lesson. I remember spending three years dreading Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, we had two lessons a week. Wednesday was the day of reviewing the previous test and the assignment of the chapter.
