Patrick Fay (thepoorknight) Hello all:

My name is Patrick and I am happy to have found this group of people to read with and bounce ideas and questions off. It will ease the burden on my wife who has, by default, had to endure my monologues on topics which most sane people find as fascinating as an oil change.

Luckily I am not one of those sane people and I am always ready to read about and discuss anything (fiction and non-fiction) from prehistory up to some vaguely defined time beyond which discussions are drawn into the vortex of current politics.

message 3155: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Welcome, Patrick. Glad you could join us and I understand the wife thing myself, ha-ha.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

Annelie Rozeboom | 3 comments Hi, my name is Annelie and I'm 47 (I think. I'm losing count). I love reading all kinds of books, but have a great passion for history. I lived in China for ten years, where I worked as a journalist. Now I live in Madagascar, where I work as an English teacher at an international school. My latest interest is in South Africa and its history, and I'm collecting stories from South Africans as research for my next book, but I also have an Einstein biography as to-read on my shelf. I almost finished to raise two kids (15 and 17) and have one little one (7) left. (And I garden, have a dog and a cat, but all that is boring)

Well, the irregular verbs are the same, but the setting is quite different from what I was used to before (a huge mega city in China with 15 million people). Madagascar was a great country to live in until two years ago, when there was a coup d'etat and now history is repeating itself here.

Hi David, I read a biography of Mandela some time ago, called Mandela by Martin Meredith. Very good! Interesting also, as the author gives lots of background on the historical events and he doesn't glamorize Mandela. (I can't stand books that are about how great one person is). Anyway, in case you feel like another South Africa book, I recommend it. Mandela by Martin Meredith

Welcome Danielle and Pia to the History Book Club.

It is funny but most folks think that the place where they live is "perfect" in every way or at the very least perfect for them. Austin is a great city and I have enjoyed my visits there. It is a little too hot for my tastes on a 12 month basis but it is a great place especially for those folks who do not mind a little heat and glorious sunny days. It has a lot to offer in the way of cultural activities, higher education and welcoming people. I can see why you love it so much Danielle.

Pia, I share your love for Russian History and some of my favorite reads of all time have dealt with Russia and had as its backdrop Russian History;

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy by Leo Tolstoy Leo Tolstoy

Thank you Bryan and Alisa for helping newcomers Pia and Danielle.

Thanks and look for your note in the Africa folder.

Dona Munker (donamunker) | 2 comments Hi, Everyone,
My name is Dona. I'm a nonfiction writer and former college English teacher and trade book editor. I love serious historical biography, really good historical fiction and historical nonfiction, and American social and cultural history. Most of the history and biography I read is in the American Progressive Era (roughly 1890-1920), especially women's suffrage and the literature of that period. I especially love biography, nonfiction, and historical fiction that can bring this period alive.

It may take me a while to master the technical requirements for the group and start posting, but I very much appreciate the detailed instructions and guidelines and I'm glad I discovered the HBC.

Thank you Bryan for assisting Dona.

Hello Dona and welcome to the History Book Club. Take as much time as you like to get used to the technical requirements but please remember that we are all here to help you get the hang of the citation rules. They become second nature after you do them a couple of times.

Whatever we can do to help, let us know.

The American Progressive Era is an interesting time period. We hope to get your recommendations for reading some great books about this era.

Enjoy the group and welcome aboard.

James Tracy (jamesatracy) | 3 comments Hello, My name is James.

I presently work as a software engineer (specifically web application development) and my undergraduate background is in computer science. However, I also have a Masters degree in the History of Science which I recently acquired after deciding to leave the Ph.D. program. I have always been interested in both history and science separately and was very pleased to have had the opportunity to study them in a combined form. At the time I focused my reading primarily on the ways in which science intersects with politics and religion, with an emphasis on Darwin's legacy in the United States. I won my university library's annual book collecting competition all three years that I was enrolled.

More recently I have turned my attention to U.S History and fiction, the later which I had long neglected since my undergraduate days. Cheers!

Kris (krisrabberman) | 1 comments Hi everyone! I just joined a few days ago, and am very happy to introduce myself. I am 44, live in Philadelphia, have a Ph.D. in medieval history. I direct academic programs and teach at the University of Pennsylvania--I just finished teaching my summer course on the history of sexuality this evening. I was very happy to see how comprehensive the genres and topics are that this group includes, as I always have felt I was drawn to history because it meant I could read and study just about anything. My main fields of study for my doctorate included medieval Europe 500-1500, British social history 500-1500, and ethnohistory. I also have taught widely in women's history, history of the family, and history of sexuality. I don't let myself be limited by these fields, though-I read across a lot of time periods and styles of history, and also love autobiographies, biographies, and travel books with a focus on history and cultural study. I'm looking forward to the discussions here!

My name is Ally. I am 21 and a student at Ithaca College (Ithaca, NY). I'm from outside of the Boston area. I am a history major, women's studies and art history minor. I love all areas of history and don't have a preference. I'm new to goodreads. I have found it hard to get history recommendations and difficult to decipher what is worth reading because few people I know read this genre. Thus, I'm really looking forward to the books and discussions here.
