ARCHIVE ONE: PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF ~

My name is Patrick and I am happy to have found this group of people to read with and bounce ideas and questions off. It will ease the burden on my wife who has, by default, had to endure my monologues on topics which most sane people find as fascinating as an oil change.
Luckily I am not one of those sane people and I am always ready to read about and discuss anything (fiction and non-fiction) from prehistory up to some vaguely defined time beyond which discussions are drawn into the vortex of current politics.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

My interest is the history of Mexico, the Spanish conquest of Americas, the Russo-Japanese war of 1905, and overall military history.
I've lived in many beautiful countries around the world. Hope to contribute to this community :)

Welcome to the group, I am sure you'll have a great time here discussing your favourite books and authors and I am sure you will find lots of good suggestions once you start poking around in the various threads.
I also enjoy military history so hopefully we will have a lot to chat about.

Glad to be a part of the group :)

Welcome Annelie - before I retired I taught English, but never in such an exotic location as Madagascar.

My name is Susan. I live in the US, North Carolina. I am a former math and science teacher that loves history. I started a non-fiction bookclub a couple of years ago which has dwindled down to 3 people, but we still have great discussions. I love all types of history, but have been more focused on US history over the last year. Currently I am reading Founding Brothers (let's see if I can do this)

I look forward to suggested readings and discussion!

David from Spain, just turned 40. Working in corporate services of a research institute. Degree in Political Science and Sociology, MA in Project Management and Development. Hobbies (time and weather permitting): Play with my kids, read, wine, cooking and food, watch the sun rising, running.
Reading now (and enjoying a lot) The Long Walk to Freedom by N. Mandela. Just read a biography about Azana, Spanish politician.

Hi David, I read a biography of Mandela some time ago, called Mandela by Martin Meredith. Very good! Interesting also, as the author gives lots of background on the historical events and he doesn't glamorize Mandela. (I can't stand books that are about how great one person is). Anyway, in case you feel like another South Africa book, I recommend it.

Welcome Danielle and Pia to the History Book Club.
It is funny but most folks think that the place where they live is "perfect" in every way or at the very least perfect for them. Austin is a great city and I have enjoyed my visits there. It is a little too hot for my tastes on a 12 month basis but it is a great place especially for those folks who do not mind a little heat and glorious sunny days. It has a lot to offer in the way of cultural activities, higher education and welcoming people. I can see why you love it so much Danielle.
Pia, I share your love for Russian History and some of my favorite reads of all time have dealt with Russia and had as its backdrop Russian History;

Christina, welcome to the History Book Club. I have been out of the country so I have been delayed in offering my good wishes and welcomes until now. There are quite a few legal eagles in the group so I hope you enjoy yourself here.
Thank you Alisa for giving Christina so many helpful hints and links.

Hi David,
This thread is really only for welcomes and intros. I have moved your note and also added the proper way to do the citation for the History Book Club. All citations must have three parts as explained above to all newcomers.
Thanks and look for your note in the Africa folder.

My name is Dona. I'm a nonfiction writer and former college English teacher and trade book editor. I love serious historical biography, really good historical fiction and historical nonfiction, and American social and cultural history. Most of the history and biography I read is in the American Progressive Era (roughly 1890-1920), especially women's suffrage and the literature of that period. I especially love biography, nonfiction, and historical fiction that can bring this period alive.
It may take me a while to master the technical requirements for the group and start posting, but I very much appreciate the detailed instructions and guidelines and I'm glad I discovered the HBC.

Hello Dona and welcome to the History Book Club. Take as much time as you like to get used to the technical requirements but please remember that we are all here to help you get the hang of the citation rules. They become second nature after you do them a couple of times.
Whatever we can do to help, let us know.
The American Progressive Era is an interesting time period. We hope to get your recommendations for reading some great books about this era.
Enjoy the group and welcome aboard.

I presently work as a software engineer (specifically web application development) and my undergraduate background is in computer science. However, I also have a Masters degree in the History of Science which I recently acquired after deciding to leave the Ph.D. program. I have always been interested in both history and science separately and was very pleased to have had the opportunity to study them in a combined form. At the time I focused my reading primarily on the ways in which science intersects with politics and religion, with an emphasis on Darwin's legacy in the United States. I won my university library's annual book collecting competition all three years that I was enrolled.
More recently I have turned my attention to U.S History and fiction, the later which I had long neglected since my undergraduate days. Cheers!

My name is Ally. I am 21 and a student at Ithaca College (Ithaca, NY). I'm from outside of the Boston area. I am a history major, women's studies and art history minor. I love all areas of history and don't have a preference. I'm new to goodreads. I have found it hard to get history recommendations and difficult to decipher what is worth reading because few people I know read this genre. Thus, I'm really looking forward to the books and discussions here.
