ARCHIVE ONE: PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF ~

The book's story was told in Ivan Doig's narrative way, told by a foster child hustling and manipulating his way through a succession of Montana(?)foster homes. I think in the book's final sentence the boy says he's grown up and joined the marines.
Welcome Bob, Becky and Elizabeth,

Linda, a book recommendation if you have not read:

It should be up your alley.

I am a member of the Pritzker Military Library in Chicago. Mr. Atkinson was in Chicago last spring. He was very interesting. The 3rd book is supposed to be out early 2012. I am going to reread the first 2 in the fall so I will be ready for the 3rd in the late winter or early spring.
Thanks for the reccomendation!!!
Linda

I'm not very good at talking about myself so apologies in advance. My name is Rose I'm from Dublin, Ireland. I'm almost 20. At the moment I'm a Carer for my mother and also look after my niece(2) and nephew(5). In September I'm planning on returning to college to do a course in legal administration.
And that's basically me right now in a nutshell. Thanks a lot for letting me join.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. An example of how books you mention should look:

Good to meet you- it was a wonderful and thorough introduction for someone who's not very good at talking about themselves!
It's nice to have you here, and I look forward to reading your posts. Hopefully you'll have lots of fun talking about your favourite periods of history, books and authours, whilst learning a little something along the way. :)
Glad you found us. Thanks for joining!

My name is Bud and after some tedious bouts with the site, it looks as if my attempts to introduce myself might have worked. This site just came up for me last night. My choices of books center around non-fiction U. S. military history. Also my thanks to one of the moderators for getting me this far. Although it took me quite a while to get my computer to get to the right place in spite of my fimgers striking the wrong keys, it has been a neat experience reading the many comments. Meanwhile, if this works, at least the introduction was finally conquered.

Robert, I am moving your post to this thread ~

It is the best and most appropriate place to ask for recommendations from the membership.

Thanks Bentley.
Hello and welcome to Robert and Douglas. It's nice to have you with us. I'm sure you'll both have lots of fun discussing history, your favourite books, and authours. I look forward to reading your contributions.

It's great to find such an active reading group as this-- I look forward to contributing if time permits. My name is Conor; I am 24 years old and about to start pharmacy school at UC San Diego. I have switched career paths twice- first from dentistry to English PhD, now to pharmacy. I really hope this one sticks; I could use some more stability in my life!
While pursuing English I became especially interested in French literary theory, philosophy, and culture, and was excited by the international artistic community that was active in Paris at the turn of the 20th century. This is one of the historical moments I would like to learn more about.
The other topic that has piqued my interest recently is ancient Greece. It sits at the boundary of myth and the beginning of history, and seems the foundation of almost everything that followed. Many philosophers have lauded the Greeks' way of life for one reason or another, and I would like to better understand what the big deal was.
Finally: I did a lot of work on Samuel Beckett and Nietzsche as an English major. Both of these writers fascinate me and I would like to develop my understanding of them for as long as I live.
Having said all this, I am still very open to reading new books and topics related to history. I used to read only fiction but find myself entering a nonfiction phase of my life. There is so much to know that I prefer to connect more directly to the world I live in.
Anyways apologies for the extended intro. I hope to learn more about you all and the world we live in through this reading group. Thanks for having me!

Hi Robert: that's a pretty broad field, Cdn history. I am going to take a wild stab and suggest one for starters: John Mack Faragher's A Great and Noble Scheme, on the tragedy of the Acadian expulsion. Faragher is an American academic, and because so much "Canadian" history is really continental in the pre-Confederation era, some of the essential reading has been produced by American historians.

Hi Linda: I live on the other side of Georgian Bay, outside of Midland. I don't have any books on the Bruce colonists that immediately come to mind. But if you're interested in a grounding in the 19th-century history of the peninsula, it's worthwhile investigating the treaty-making with Indigenous people, as it remains contentious and the subject of ongoing land claims. J.R. Miller's Compact, Contract, Covenant is a good start.Compact, Contract, Covenant: Aboriginal Treaty-Making in Canada

Thanks!
All,
This thread is only for intros and welcomes. We do have an off topic and conversation thread where the sky is the limit for conversation. However, no matter what thread you are on, we do have a citation rule for any citations of books and authors. This helps everyone find the conversation on any book or author and cross reference it to various threads on our site and goodreads. The software is very powerful and we try to take advantage of it.
Thank you Alisa for the reminders and assistance that you have given.

My name is Lessa and I'm a recent graduate living in OK. I've always loved history (particularly political history) so finding this group was a case of love at... Well, I won't say at first sight, so much as love at first-glance-through-the-reading list. I look forward to reading and discussing with you all.

What's the topic of your PhD?
btw I checked out your book. Looks great.

Welcome to the group, I am sure you'll have a great time here discussing your favourite books and authors and I am sure you will find lots of good suggestions once you start poking around in the various threads.

I am a new author with a lifelong love of history. I have been reading historical novels and non fiction since I was a teenager forty years ago. I am currently enjoying Jerusalem by Simon Sebag Montefiore and have recently finished Plagues, their Origin, History and Future, and Gromoires, A history of Magic Books. I hope to contribute as time allows. History is the one subject that will keep me interested until I too am part of our historical story.

You might get a sense of me from my "How I Met My Wife" story.
Divorced, a single dad, I read a personal ad (the old classified paper section type).
"SWF, lover of books, NPR, 2 kids, looking for male, similar interests, height proportionate to weight"
A woman who loved books! Figuring I had nothing to lose but the cost of a stamp - I wrote a letter, closing with:
"Now for the truth in advertising. I don't listen to National Public Radio and as for height proportionate to weight - I have to grow 7 inches taller before we meet."
I got 2 points for knowing what NPR was - and scored for honesty and humor. Now, 16 years later (married 14), we still share books.(and I STILL need to grow taller)

Afraid I'm rubbish at introductions, but here goes.
I'm Jonathan. Born in South Wales, I've lived here all my life. I got interested in the Peninsular War period a few years ago when I needed to make a set of tack for a cavalry horse - long story, but I've been a saddler by trade for the last twelve years so that's not as bad as it sounds.
The problem with history, which I hated with a vengeance at school, is it tends to get under your skin. So now, apart from reading as much as I can about Napoleon et al, I have a novel published based on British light dragoons of the time, and more in the pipeline. The highlights of my 'historical' career so far (if you can call them that) have been giving a talk to the Napoleonic Association Annual Conference on 'Researching and Writing a Historical Novel' and getting a congratulatory email from Bernard Cornwell.
See? Pretty unexciting, really.
Great to meet more enthusiasts.
