Checkman | 3 comments Hello everyone. Aussie Rick and I have been exchanging messages, but I haven't introduced myself formally. So here goes. I'm a father, husband, police officer, middle-aged and a history buff. I actually have a Bachelor in Liberal Arts (History)from Boise State University located in Boise, Idaho (Class of 90). Which is why my careers have been the U.S. Army and now police work. Wonderful liberal arts degree. Has helped me tremendously in my current line of work(Really!). But it doesn't lead to fame and riches does it. In addition to history I also enjoy fiction, some sci-fi and so forth.
Well anyway hello. I'll be around.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Checkman,

Good to see you here so welcome to the group, I am sure you'll have a great time here discussing your favourite books and authors.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

This is how a book that you mention in your post should look:

19 Weeks America, Britain and the Fateful Summer of 1940 by Norman Moss by Norman Moss

Welcome Checkman. It sounds like you are happy in terms of what you decided to do and that is what is most important - isn't it?

We are glad to have you with us and special thanks to Aussie Rick for giving you some pointers on this fine Memorial Day. Beautiful weather today and a great beginning to summer holidays.

Hope you enjoy your time in the group.

Amy Hustead (ahustead) | 2 comments Hi all, my name is Amy and I'm a newbie both to Goodreads and to this group. I'm a mother of 2 wonderful boys and work full time as an Executive Assistant to a CEO, so finding the time to read is always an issue but thankfully I have a long commute so can enjoy audiobooks. I just finished a great one this weekend (cited according to the guidelines)and am now looking to my next. Thanks for letting me join the group, I am truly looking forward to the reviews, recommendations, etc.. in my downtime, albeit limited :)The Invisible Bridge

A good effort on the citation and we appreciate it. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. Unfortunately Amy the book that you cited is not done according to our guidelines; this is the way it should look:

The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer by Julie Orringer Julie Orringer

I will add more as I have time but I am off to a meeting. I just did not want you to post further thinking that the citation you made in 2937 was correct according to our guidelines. A proper hello will come later in the day.

Aly G (lyssy2007) | 1 comments Hello everyone,

My name is Alyssa, but I go by Aly, always have. I am 22 years young (23 in August!), and I love history and anything history related.

I have a couple of antique items and a wonderful collection of antique books. I love the smell of books especially an old one, that musty smell that they have is great to me, I also love when the pages are torn and discolored etc. It adds character to it I think. Because of my collection of books, my bedroom smells like a library.

I have been reading for as long as I can remember, in the third grade I was at a University level in reading & spelling. I find it very sad that so many people lose their imagination and the ability to think due to all the technology that is available to us now.

While most people my age are partying and doing many dangerous & illegal things, I choose to read, do inventory on my collection of antiques, bid on/buy antique books online or browse thrift stores, garage sales & antique stores.

I do of course have a life outside of books, I do party sometimes with friends and family, I hang out with friends and spend time with family and things like that, and I have a job (to support my hobby!) for the most part I am just a normal girl, in her twenties, who just happens to have hobbies and interests that are not normal for her age group.

I am a very friendly person, I like to make people laugh and smile, I talk a lot, I am opinionated, I don't care what people think of me, I say what I feel and what I think, I question everything. Well that's about it I guess :) if anyone has any questions or anything feel free to ask me here or message me. And I would love it if I could get some adds! I just started this account and currently have 0 friends.

Take care everyone! Have a great day/night.

Hello Marjorie,

That is our rule and our guideline so it is not optional and very soon it will be old hat to you and not as confusing.

We like to see the bookcover; it stands out and it is not blended into the text of the other which is very confusing and nobody reads it or gives it any attention. Simply really a waste of time. With the bookcover which is larger as well; it is very clear which edition you are also referring to. So that is mandated.

The author's photo when available and it is about 80% of the time is a cool feature and we like to see what the author looks like.

The author's name in linkable text is easy as well and you only have to go into the author's section twice to pick up both.

All of the above are not optional and that is why we want to take advantage of the powerful goodreads software. Your opinion has been heard but we are not changing our rules and guidelines. BTW, Marjorie - maybe I missed it - so I apologize if that is the case, but was that comment your only intro. Because only intros and welcomes are on topic here. We would be happy to help you via the PM facility if you need any assistance and we have an entire help folder. You will find the folders listed alphabetically.

If you are having any problems with posting, that is why we provide the links etc. for all newcomers.

Thanks, Bentley. Yes I introduced myself and recommended a book, but was told about your policy of including the book's and author's image. (Which I'm sure I won't be able to figure out, but that's okay as I'll just read what others recommend.) I have added some what look like terrific reads to my TBR list.

Sorry Alex Sinclair: as the pop up stated and our guidelines state: no marketing, no self promotion even if it is subtle.

I have taken the liberty to remove those parts:

Hello everyone, I am Alex Sinclair. Sentence deleted.

I am new to the group and just wanted to say, hello. I live in the south of U.K, which is a beautiful place and full of history. I look forward to getting to know everyone. I hope you are all having a great day!

Actually it's pretty easy to do once you've done it a time or two and everyone is really helpful walking you through it.

I wish I could read the book titles from the cover pictures but oh well.

Kevin (smokler) Kevin Smokler here. San Francisco via the American Midwest. I read a lot of contemporary fiction, narrative non fiction, essays and increasingly, classics.

At my job, we've just published a book on the Civil War which has reawakened my appetite for narratively told history books. I had a spate about a decade ago of reading a good deal of Doris Kearns Goodwin and William Manchester books. Miss those kinds of things and hoping to start up again.

Elizabeth S (esorenson) | 2011 comments Welcome, Alex Sinclair! It must be nice to live around all that history in the southern UK.

Welcome, Kevin! It is good to get back into history, isn't it. (No pun intended!)

and

Welcome Judy! I hope you enjoy Distant Mirror, I'm looking forward to it as well. It is up to you whether you want to start reading now or wait and stick with the group. The big thing to watch for is spoilers. As we discuss each week's reading, everyone needs to avoid referencing events that happen later in the book (earlier in the book is okay). If you think you can avoid spoilers if you read ahead, then dig in!

Here's the syllabus with the reading schedule, in case you haven't found it yet: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...
