ARCHIVE ONE: PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF ~
Welcome Barbara, Geoff, and Bob. Please familiarize yourself with the rules and guidelines. I can see that the assisting moderators have all posted helpful links.
Please be mindful that when citing a book; always post three parts: the bookcover, the author's photo when available and always the author's link which is the author's name in linkable text.

Welcome to the group, I am sure you'll have a great time here discussing your favourite books and authors and it appears that you have a wide range of interests to explore.
Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.
This is how a book that you mention in a post should look:

With Nothing But Our Courage: The Loyalist Diary of Mary MacDonald, Johnstown, Quebec, 1783
Was the first Dear Canada book I ever read and since then have stoped at nothing to find and read every new one that comes out. There are just too many good historical books that i have read.

Krystal, make sure you post the books as Aussie Rick pointed out in the guidelines above. Your book should look like this:

It should always display the book cover, author photo (when available) and author link. You'll get the hang of it.
Thanks.

I was going to point you towards a Canadian history thread where you could post some of those books you mention. But I couldn't find one! I'll check with Bentley and see if I just missed it or if we need to create one. For now, please feel free to mention books either in the "What is Everybody Reading Now" thread or the off-topic thread.
Thanks for sharing books you've enjoyed.

Civil war topics are of interest, more so when they are of personal vantage points rather than military detail.
I would appreciate book recommendations on the history of the Chicago political machine.

Welcome to the group, I am sure you'll have a great time here discussing your favourite books and authors. I also share an interest in the American Civil War as do many others here.

I am always impressed with the recommendations that our group members come up with and am sure you will find some suggestions there.

It is always book cover, followed by author photo (when available) and author link (always.)
You should post your suggestion in one of the Civil War threads, the best one probably here ~

You'll get the hang of it but let us know if you need a hand as you navigate the site.

John, I can strongly recommend the following:
City of the Century: The Epic of Chicago and the Making of America

It's a very interesting history of Chicago during the 1800s. Although the book's focus is much broader than machine politics, it has at least one chapter on politics, which discusses the pro-union mayor (forget his name) who was in office in the 1880s.
Happy reading,
Bob

As you get started, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is true when mentioning a cook or just an author. For the authors that you mentioned, this is how they should appear in your message:

And an example of a book citation:

Thanks and glad you joined us.

My name is Angie and I'm a history graduate student in Denver, Colorado. I love American history from colonial times through the Civil War. I also enjoy history about revolutions and social changes. I have tons of favorite authors and I am always up for reading new authors! I am currently reading A Midwife's Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard, Based on Her Diary, 1785-1812

Welcome to the group, Alisa has already set you up to begin so I look forward to hearing from you soon about your favourite books and authors in those periods of history that interest you.

My name is Adam. I finished a History degree nearly ten years ago but I have been reading a good stream of history books ever since. I usually prefer books with a political bent and have a major soft spot for Indian, 19th-20th labour, Spanish civil war and more recently Chinese history.
Recently started reading Thabo Mbeki and the Battle for the Soul of the ANC by William Mervin Gumede which is about the recouperation of ANC in power in post-apartheid South Africa.

I moved your interesting discussion to the WII thread where it is more appropriate. I hope you and others continue with it. Good stuff.

I'm a bit of a cyber derelict. Currently listening to a webcast of an otr episode of Dana Andrew's I Was a Communist for the FBI - other tabs open are my hotmail page, this page, this forum's Guidelines, my facebook page, 3 tabs from WhatIfSports, and the last tab is a google search of Elizabeth Taylor.
It was probably inevitable that I'd find this site. I've been using different FB apps to catalog my books and there must have been some on a Goodreads page that linked me to here. Looks like a good group, and I'm looking forward to participating.
We are glad to have you Steve. On another thread; Elizabeth S was kind enough to post some of the helpful links to our guidelines etc. so I will not post them again here.
Actually the minimum age for this site is 18; but I am sure that you exceed that age (smile).
It sounds like you will enjoy yourself here and we are glad to have you.
