Rachelle Peterson | 1 comments Hello,

My name is Rachelle, i'm 35. I live in Utah with my hubby and 3 young children. I'm in a position where I am able to going back to school. I'm attending the U of U and my major is History, which I love and am enjoying.

I enjoy reading all types of history, fiction and non-fiction.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Rachelle,

Welcome to the group, I am sure you'll have a great time here discussing your favourite books and authors. What type of history are your currently studying?

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

This is how a book that you mention in a post should look:

One Bullet Away by Nathaniel Fick by Nathaniel Fick

Welcome Racelle and welcome Felicia,

A couple things to help you get started with The History Book Club. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

The citations have three parts: (bookcover always when available - it usually is except for older books), (author's photo when available) and always (the author's link) - author's name in linkable text.

Here is a sample:

My Early Life 1874-1904 by Winston S. Churchill by Winston S. Churchill Winston S. Churchill

I also have added some other helpful links including the guidelines, orientation, etc.

Alisa (mstaz) Rachelle and Felicia, one of you posted a follow up note with a book and instead of replying I inadvertently deleted it. My error, so sorry! I think it was a note about a book you are reading now, and actually we have a thread for that so please feel free to post it there.

Here is the thread. http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Hope to see you participate soon!

Veronika Sprague (veronikasprague) Well hello, everyone! I literally just stumbled across The History Book Club this morning, and wow, am I psyched!
I'm just getting back into reading historical fiction, and I currently have the enormous-but-oh-so-good tome John Adams sitting on my sidetable, riddled with pencil marking and underscorings. I'm rediscovering that history really is alive, and it's been so much fun!

About me real quick: I'm a senior in college, getting certified to teach secondary English (though I'm also interested in teaching theatre, history, and writing). I love to write and my dream is to write novels and screenplays for a living someday. I'm an all-American girl residing in the rolling hills of Kentucky, and I love books, movies, horses, 4-wheelers, and coffee houses.

Looking forward to joining the discussions!

Hello Zeeshan,

Where is Gojra in Pakistan? Is it in the Province of Punjab near the city of Lahore? I looked it up and discovered that your location is well known for eye surgery in your area and India as well. Here is the excerpt I found:

Eye Surgery

Gojra was a renowned centre for eye surgery. Its fame for ophthalmic excellence was known throughout colonial India.[6] One of the leading figures of Gojra was the eye surgeon, Dr. Harbhajan Singh.[7] He gave eyesight to a huge number of patients whose eyes could not be cured by many of the ophthalmologists in more sophisticated hospitals in big cities like Delhi, Lahore or Calcutta.Another leading figure was Dr Rehmat Ullah. He later on established an eye hospital in Gojra, by the name of Dr Rehmat Ullah's General and Eye Hospital[citation needed]. Later on his mission was carried on by his two sons Dr Abdul Hafeez and Dr Muhammad Iqbal. Currently a project to construct a 1400 bed eye hospital in Gojra is underway.
Very impressive.

What is your MMBS. I am sure that you are very proud of your achievements; but every country seems to have different terminology for their degree programs.

We are delighted to have you join us. You may be our first member from Pakistan although we have members from all over the world. Everybody's views are welcome and listened to. Elizabeth S, one of our assisting moderators gave you the best advice: "explore, be polite, ask as many questions as you'd like, and enjoy".

Please make sure to learn how to do our citations of books and authors.

I noticed that Bryan gave you a few pointers and links to take a look at.

If you are citing a book, then you must add the book cover always, the author's photo when available and always the author's link which is the author's name in linkable text.

Here is a sample of what it would look like:

The Iliad & The Odyssey (Boxed Set) by Homer by Homer Homer

We look forward to your views on the books we have discussed and please join in on some of our discussions if you can get ahold of the books we are reading. We are honored that you have chosen us as your first group on goodreads.

All best,

Bentley

Diane (dianeoliva) | 4 comments Hello. My name is Diane Oliva. I live in Morgantown, WV and I am in my early 60's. I am retired buyer. I was a home textile buyer for a Federated Department Store (10 years) and a manager/buyer for a hospital gift shop (15 years). I love to read and my favorite genre is nonfiction. I will thank Brian Lamb of Cspan's Booknotes for converting me to nonfiction. That said, I will read almost anything. I just downloaded the James Polk book to my Kindle and will join in the discussion next week. I seem to remember an interview many years ago on Booknotes with an author who wrote about James Polk. I don't know if this book was the one. My memory isn't all that great.

Hello Diane,

Welcome to the History Book Club and you have come to the right place with your interest in non fiction.

Just a few housekeeping helpful hints first:

A couple things to help you get started with The History Book Club. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. Jump right in on the threads that you are interested in and there will always be an assisting mod to give you the help you might need.

We are glad that you will be joining our assisting moderator Bryan for the next Presidential Series read which I hope you enjoy.

Polk was a president and author and of course we are referencing our upcoming book in the conversation, so you must cite the book according to our guidelines which is a snap to do once you get the hang of it.

The Polk book and author would be cited as follows:

Polk The Man Who Transformed the Presidency and America by Walter R. Borneman by Walter R. Borneman

Isn't the Kindle the most handy tool for reading. I am sure that you love it as much as I love mine.

So now just jump into the threads after getting acclimated to the rules and guidelines and enjoy.

Good job on the add Diane. Looks good. In the case of the book cited there is no author's photo available; if there were; then that would be the third item added like in the Churchill example I gave above in message 2288.
