Good to see you join the group. I am sure you will have a great time discussing great books and great moments in history with the rest of the group.
Below are some links that will help you navigate the History Book Club and what our requirements are. It would be very helpful if you took the time to familiarise yourself with these:
Policies & Practices
(this one is helpful for when you want to add book covers and author's photo's/links)
and:
Orientation & Roadmap
I also enjoying reading about ancient Rome and I'm currently reading "Constantine" by Paul Stephenson.

Welcome Marge whatever age you feel you belong to..you should enjoy yourself here.
One thing to check out is message 1613 which will show you some of the links to our guidelines and procedures which will help you acclimate yourself.
One of the guidelines we do have is to always to add the book cover, author's photo (if available), and the author's link which is the author's name in text.
So the one book you mentioned would be cited this way:I have just included the first one in the series.

I'm Richard, from sunny South Wales UK.
Great to find an excellent history group that shares my passion of history.
I enjoy reading books covering all periods, although Roman History is a particular favourite.
I'm starting on 'The First Man in Rome' later today. I'm a week or so behind the discussions, but I hope to catch up soon and participate with the group.
Rich

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the book you've mentioned should look:

Take a few moments to read our policies:

and our guidelines:

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us moderators. I look forward to your postings.
Richard - welcome from Sunny South Wales..that is like all of us in the US saying welcome from sunny California. By the way the distinction that you make that you are from sunny South Wales might mean that North Wales might not be so sunny. Is that the case.
Bryan, one of our assisting moderators, has given you some great information which should prove useful to you while being on the site. These things are not too difficult at all to get used to and we are all here to help you along until they become second nature to you.
We are glad that you are going to join our historical fiction discussion. The book is a large one but actually quite good and readable. You should be able to catch up in no time. And you can post on the threads where you happen to be at any time. I know that Alisa will be delighted to have you join her discussion.
How did you develop your passion for history? Are you a professor, a barrister, into local politics etc. We find that many folks who love history sometimes have similar backgrounds.
Also, do you prefer to be called Richard or Rich. We have a lot of Ricks in the group, so we like to make sure we get it right.
Glad to have you with us,
Bentley

Nadine Welcome,
Be sure to look at post 1638 that Bryan put together for Richard which has all of our links to guidelines, etc. That should help you just jump right in real soon.
I think you will find what you are looking for here but if you do not we have a suggestion box thread and you can always send me a PM if you have a specific interest area.
Let us know if there is anything we can do to make your stay even more enjoyable.

I don't mind being called Richard or Rich - whichever one hasn't already been taken :)
Thanks for the advice Bryan regarding the book links - I'll be sure to adhere to the correct procedures when I post.
Finally, welcome Nadine!

I am a professor of Political Science at a community college and a state university. My training was in International Relations, International Law, and International Political Economy.
My current interests include the evolution of strategic bombing in the 20th century, including the international legal regime established with regard to strategic bombing.
I am also researching an article on the origins of French and Indian War (Seven Years' War). Suffice it to say that my teaching responsibilities require me to stay abreast of historical research on international relations since the Peace of Westphalia (1648). Hence, I am enthusiastic to read the comments of those whose historical background is far superior to mine.
I am married, have a low-functioning autistic daughter, and spend way too much money on fast cars.

Hello William,
We have quite a few folks from England in the group including one of the moderators.
Where are you studying for your history degrees?
We have a guideline for citations so that folks can easily research books and authors mentioned by our members. Additionally, the goodreads software helps populate our entire group site when the citations are done with links which is pretty powerful.
In terms of the books and authors mentioned, you would always add the linkable book cover, author's photo if available and always the author's link. For an author only, just the last two.
For example:
Steven Pressfield
For the author's mentioned:
I am assuming you are talking about -
Simon Scarrow
Conn Iggulden
Bernard Cornwell
Check out post 1654 for links to also get you started.
And I am sure that you will find many threads and books to enjoy here.
Welcome.

I am a lover of historical fiction. I recently read, well, last year, Pillars of the Earth, then on to The Princes of Ireland, and am currently reading A Danger to the State, by Philip Trower. I especially love HS that educates me to period and place, and especially, the period mind. And I think that for a writer, this period mind set must be their most difficult challenge, for if the writer is too true to the times, modern readers may be reluctant to go along.
Best!

Paul, as mentioned in our earlier postings, don't forget to use the add book/author feature in the comment box. Here they are:
