Welcome Scott to the History Book Club..we are glad to have you with us.

As Aussie Rick pointed out, we do have some rules when making citations or recommendations for books; so the goodreads software can populate the site correctly. We add the book covers, the author's photo if available and the author's link.

Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow Ron Chernow Ron Chernow

We do have a folder on Ancient History and I am sure you will enjoy discussing books there.

Alisa (mstaz) Hi Scott! ~ Welcome to the group. There are a lot of great discussions to choose from so I am sure you will find things that pique your interest. Our guidelines foster open and spirited discussion and one of the advantages of how we cite book links is that you can quickly read reviews and find new things to add to your reading list. Jump in, and enjoy!

Alisa (mstaz) Hello Joyce! ~ Welcome, we are glad you found us and looking forward to your participation. I am sure you will find plenty to pique your interest as we have numerous topic threads relating to a broad array of history related topics.

Please also take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the books you've mentioned should look:

An example.

More information:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2878...

Take a moment and look at our orientation thread:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1851...

The add book/author feature is located above the comment box and easy to use once you get the hang of it. The books you mentioned would both appear like this.

Mornings on Horseback The Story of an Extraordinary Family, a Vanished Way of Life & the Unique Child Who Became Theodore Roosevelt by David McCullough by David McCullough David McCullough and Pillar of Fire America in the King Years 1963-65 (America in the King Years) by Taylor Branch by Taylor Branch Taylor Branch

I have Pillar of Fire on my to-read list so looking forward to your review.

Again, welcome! We are glad to have you.

Joyce,

Welcome to the History Book Club. This thread is only for intros and welcomes. But if you would like to post books; Alisa has given you some helpful links to the guidelines.

May I suggest you try to post somewhere in the American Civil War folder; here is the link to the different threads. Just make sure that what you post is on topic for the specific thread.

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

We just completed a discussion on Killer Angels by Michael Shaara in our historical fiction area.

We are very happy to have you and if you need any assistance, please feel free to reach out to us.

Welcome Persephone,

Please make sure to read the links that Aussie Rick sent you because we do have rules and guidelines here. And he was kind enough to show you how to add a book or cite an author. Make sure to always include the book cover, the author's photo if available and always the author's link.

So for even mentioning Leonardo Da Vinci; that citation would look like this:

And a book by him would look like this:

message 1085: by Greg (new)

Greg Hey there everyone. I'm a high school senior in a rather boring suburb of Green Bay, Wisconsin. I love to read, and I love history, so I thought this group would be wonderful for me

I don't have many books on history, but I hope to expand my collection. It feels like I have no time to read the ones I do have, though. I have over 400 books, less than 60 of which I have read.

I have a few hobbies, but if they're 'normal' for someone of my age is, of course, questionable. I love to read and gain knowledge in general. I have over 60 podcasts (I'm listening to a BBC World Service documentary as I type this) many of which are science/history/current events related. I enjoy working with my hands, so I enjoy making papercrafts from time to time, and I'm involved with the stage crew at my school. I enjoy video games, but I've stopped playing them nearly as much as I used to. I also try to spend as much time as I can with my girlfriend, with whom I have been for almost two years now.

I'm sure I will enjoy my stay here :)

message 1086: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Hi Gregg:

Welcome. Glad you could join us. It is always a pleasure to meet a high school student interested in history!

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to suggest or mention an actual book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the books should look:

American Sphinx The Character of Thomas Jefferson by Joseph J. Ellis Joseph J. Ellis Joseph J. Ellis

Take a few moments to read our policies:

Mary Ellen | 184 comments Hi. My name is Mary Ellen; I am an attorney and run a small nonprofit organization serving immigrants in Connecticut. I was a history major in college and taught history for a while to junior high students. The Civil War is a favorite period of mine -- so sorry I missed The Killer Angels discussion, as I love that book -- but also am interested in US and European history in general. I'm looking forward to the Master and Commander discussion, as I am a big O'Brian fan as well.

Hello Mary Ellen,

We are happy to have you with us. We do have rules/guidelines for the group and the following links may prove helpful to you. If you need any additional guidance, please do not hesitate to ask.

Here are the guidelines:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

Here is an orientation:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Here is a thread called Mechanics of the Board:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

Our group requires that when you cite a book and/or author that you add the book cover when available (it usually is), the author's photo when available, and the author's link which is always available. The Goodreads Software is very powerful and populates the fields on our site when this is done.

In following our rules for citations, when you mentioned Killer Angels it should have been cited like the following example:

The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara Michael Shaara

There is no author's photo available on goodreads for the above.

Since you mentioned Master and Commander, that citation should look like the following:

Master and Commander (Aubrey/Maturin Book 1) by Patrick O'Brian Patrick O'Brian Patrick O'Brian

If you like the American Civil War, we have a folder that we are developing which has an abundance of threads already dedicated to that period (two pages full of threads already):

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

It is a shame that you missed the Killer Angels discussion (see citation above).

We do have an upcoming discussion on Theodore Roosevelt. The book is titled Mornings on Horseback. You might enjoy participating in that discussion as well:

Mornings on Horseback The Story of an Extraordinary Family, a Vanished Way of Life & the Unique Child Who Became Theodore Roosevelt by David McCullough David McCullough David McCullough

There are quite a few legal eagles in the group. I hope you find something of interest while you are here.

Bentley

Alisa (mstaz) Hello Mary Ellen! ~ Welcome to the group. With your interests and professional background I am certain you will find quite a bit out here to pique your interest. We look forward to your participation.

Elizabeth S (esorenson) | 2011 comments Welcome, Mary Ellen. I'm also sorry you missed Killer Angels, but I'm glad you will be around for Master and Commander. It is my first O'Brian book, so people like you who can give us insight into others of his books will be a big help. See you around!

Mary Ellen wrote: "Thanks, Bentley. Didn't realize the link was required for official group reads; I just checked out the "add book/author" tool and am relieved to see it is very easy!"

It is very easy actually and once you get in the habit of adding the book cover, author's photo when available and author's link, it will become second nature to you. The goodreads software only works if you add the links as requested.
