ARCHIVE ONE: PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF ~
Welcome Scott to the History Book Club..we are glad to have you with us.
As Aussie Rick pointed out, we do have some rules when making citations or recommendations for books; so the goodreads software can populate the site correctly. We add the book covers, the author's photo if available and the author's link.
Ron Chernow
We do have a folder on Ancient History and I am sure you will enjoy discussing books there.
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...
And of course we are glad that you will be joining us for the Gibbon book. We will be doing Volume I.
Edward Gibbon
The Federalist Papers discussion will be starting up soon again, we have completed the first 16; but with The First World War and Sphinx on my plate and with Gibbon starting up May 1st, I will be putting up the syllabus for the next fourteen a little later in May.
Alexander Hamilton
John Keegan

Please also take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the books you've mentioned should look:
An example.
More information:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2878...
Take a moment and look at our orientation thread:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1851...
The add book/author feature is located above the comment box and easy to use once you get the hang of it. The books you mentioned would both appear like this.

I have Pillar of Fire on my to-read list so looking forward to your review.
Again, welcome! We are glad to have you.
Joyce,
Welcome to the History Book Club. This thread is only for intros and welcomes. But if you would like to post books; Alisa has given you some helpful links to the guidelines.
May I suggest you try to post somewhere in the American Civil War folder; here is the link to the different threads. Just make sure that what you post is on topic for the specific thread.

We just completed a discussion on Killer Angels by Michael Shaara in our historical fiction area.
We are very happy to have you and if you need any assistance, please feel free to reach out to us.

That is great Joyce but if you would like to tell us what you are reading we have this thread for that:

I'm a high school History teacher with interests is primarily naval history mostly in the War of 1812, Age of Sail, Napoleonic Wars, Civil War and World War II. I work on restoring a WWII Fletcher class destroyer and sail as often as I can and time allows. I'm active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. I am married and have two kids who I adore.
Thank you Matt for introducing yourself. We appreciate it. Alisa in message 1115 has mentioned a number of links which will familiarize you with our rules and guidelines. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
And if you would like to help out in any way , let us know.

Thank you I'll read the rules and abide by them. Love to help out once I figure out how I can fit in.
Matt

Anyway, its nice to meet you all.

and:
Orientation & Roadmap
When you mention a book or author you are reading or referring to it should look something like this:

I will look forward to discussing books on classical history with you as its also one of my favourite subjects as well :)
Welcome Persephone,
Please make sure to read the links that Aussie Rick sent you because we do have rules and guidelines here. And he was kind enough to show you how to add a book or cite an author. Make sure to always include the book cover, the author's photo if available and always the author's link.
So for even mentioning Leonardo Da Vinci; that citation would look like this:
Leonardo da Vinci
And a book by him would look like this:
Leonardo da Vinci
Best wishes for an enjoyable membership,

You are not the only nut! There are others here too! Welcome! The moderators are strict on how we conduct our discussions, but fair. It a nice place to be. Hope you will enjoy. We are varied in our pet subjects but all is well here. Nice bunch.

If you are interested, we have a couple of more days left in our presidents run-off poll:

I don't have many books on history, but I hope to expand my collection. It feels like I have no time to read the ones I do have, though. I have over 400 books, less than 60 of which I have read.
I have a few hobbies, but if they're 'normal' for someone of my age is, of course, questionable. I love to read and gain knowledge in general. I have over 60 podcasts (I'm listening to a BBC World Service documentary as I type this) many of which are science/history/current events related. I enjoy working with my hands, so I enjoy making papercrafts from time to time, and I'm involved with the stage crew at my school. I enjoy video games, but I've stopped playing them nearly as much as I used to. I also try to spend as much time as I can with my girlfriend, with whom I have been for almost two years now.
I'm sure I will enjoy my stay here :)

Welcome. Glad you could join us. It is always a pleasure to meet a high school student interested in history!
Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to suggest or mention an actual book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the books should look:

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us moderators. I look forward to your postings.

Thank you for your response Gregg. We apply the same standards to everyone and many high school seniors may not be.

Hello Mary Ellen,
We are happy to have you with us. We do have rules/guidelines for the group and the following links may prove helpful to you. If you need any additional guidance, please do not hesitate to ask.
Here are the guidelines:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...
Here is an orientation:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
Here is a thread called Mechanics of the Board:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...
Our group requires that when you cite a book and/or author that you add the book cover when available (it usually is), the author's photo when available, and the author's link which is always available. The Goodreads Software is very powerful and populates the fields on our site when this is done.
In following our rules for citations, when you mentioned Killer Angels it should have been cited like the following example:
Michael Shaara
There is no author's photo available on goodreads for the above.
Since you mentioned Master and Commander, that citation should look like the following:
Patrick O'Brian
If you like the American Civil War, we have a folder that we are developing which has an abundance of threads already dedicated to that period (two pages full of threads already):
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...
It is a shame that you missed the Killer Angels discussion (see citation above).
We do have an upcoming discussion on Theodore Roosevelt. The book is titled Mornings on Horseback. You might enjoy participating in that discussion as well:
David McCullough
There are quite a few legal eagles in the group. I hope you find something of interest while you are here.

Mary Ellen wrote: "Thanks, Bentley. Didn't realize the link was required for official group reads; I just checked out the "add book/author" tool and am relieved to see it is very easy!"
It is very easy actually and once you get in the habit of adding the book cover, author's photo when available and author's link, it will become second nature to you. The goodreads software only works if you add the links as requested.
