Lois Hi Everyone

My name is Lois Perry. I live in Nova Scotia Canada. I am now retired from the library field and spend my days reading, spinning, weaving and do other craft related activities. Historical biography is my main reading interest - that and any children's books.

Looking forward to all the chats

Cheers
Lois

Becky (httpsbeckylindrooswordpresscom) | 1217 comments Hi Lois! Welcome to the best little international history book club on the net! :-) We've got great books, discussions and people here so pull up a chair and get comfy.

For this club as you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post . Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how a book you mention should look:

Mark Mortensen Welcome Lois to the world wide History Club.

You may be aware some medical studies proclaim Nova Scotia residents live longer than anyone in the world. It is undetermined if this is due to hereditary genes, a healthy diet of eating cold water fish or a combination of both. May you live a long life enjoying many books!

I've always considered myself to be a bookworm, as well as a history buff, at least since high school. It's just terribly interesting! I look forward to some great discussions with you all!

Mark Mortensen Welcome Ashley and Chris to the History Club. Ashley, corporate law is an exciting and ever important profession. Chris, when America entered WWII the USS North Carolina, from the state where I reside, was the newest battleship in the U.S. Naval Fleet. I believe the USS North Carolina, currently residing in Wilmington, NC, ended up being the most decorated battleship of the war.

Please look around at the numerous thread topics, ask questions, contribute and by all means have fun with books!

Thank you to everyone who have welcomed me to the group. I am sure I will be reading some every interesting posts.

Mark, longevity runs in my family. My father, the baby of his family, died at the age of 92 - the rest of his siblings were much older when they died. Dad's uncle was 106 when he died and I plan on following in the steps of my Great Uncle. I just have too much to do to consider anything else.

Cheers

Romilly Hi everyone, old and new! I'm new to this board and to GoodReads. Although I've already got a queue of books "I have to read...preferably RIGHT NOW" already, I'm sure I'll be adding to it from this group as well: in fact, I already have! I am currently realizing just how much I've missed about history in the 19th century in France and Germany, as most of the books in English I've seen focus mainly on the US and Great Britain. Any suggestions (while I do read French, it's rusty, so I'd prefer English!)?

Ann D Hello,
My name is Ann and I am from Nebraska. I was a history major in college and graduate school many years ago. I retired from teaching English as a Second Language at the end of this school year. Teaching was a second career and before I began that, I worked many years as a computer analyst, in a lowly job helping to find glitches in phone bills.

I read mostly fiction, but now that I am retired and have more time I would like to read more non-fiction. I am especially interested in modern American political history as well as social and cultural history from any era and place. I also like reading about other countries, particularly Russia and Japan.

Aside from reading, my other big hobby is traveling.

This looks like a very active and vibrant group. I hope to join you in discussing the Caro biography of LBJ.

Mark Mortensen Welcome Ann to the world wide History Club. Nonfiction is often wilder than fiction.

message 5284: by Ann D (new)

Ann D Thank you very much for the warm welcome. I can tell that this is a very structured group and I will do my best to follow the rules.

I understand the non-spoiler threads, but I am a bit confused about the spoiler threads. Is a spoiler thread set up at the beginning of the discussion for people who prefer to discuss the book or subject as a whole or do you wait until the non-spoiler sections are finished?

message 5285: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) The spoiler threads, such as the Glossary, are set up at the beginning of the group read and are used for the purposes that you mentioned above. Each week's read on the non-spoiler thread are dedicated solely to those chapters indicated. Hope that helps.

Matt Nicholls | 1 comments HI!

message 5287: by Ann D (new)

Ann D Thanks, Jill.
I looked at the FBI book discussion and I saw the Glossary, but it just seemed to contain information about different people rather than discussion. When I looked at an archived version of the Byzantine discussion, I saw a non-spoiler thread devoted to the book as a whole.
