Hello All
My name is Lori and I just discovered Goodreads and your History Group. This is truly exciting as I am rarely without a book in my hand and my interests lie with history and biographies. In fact my bookcases are overflowing.

I am a recently retired accountant who also enjoys cooking, birding and crosswords.

Looking forward to interesting discussions with all of you.

Hi Lori,
welcome to the group!
BTW: A nice birdie!!!!

For this club as you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment.
It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post. Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post.

This is how the book you mentioned should look:

To End a War by Richard Holbrooke by Richard Holbrooke Richard Holbrooke

More information can be found here:

Take a moment to read our guidelines:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

and the orientation to get you started:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Apart from all the fascinating discussions on history we also have quite a few fine threads on music - all kinds from all places.
Come and take a look/listen if you like.

If you have any questions feel free to ask any of the moderators.
Best wishes,

André

Hello Lori,

What is that bird anyways; it appears to be giant but that might be the telephoto lens. Is it a real bird? I was thinking it was not at first.

Hope you enjoy our group as much as we enjoy having you.

Thank you to Andre for doing the formal introduction and adding the helpful links which will ensure that you get off to a great start.

Bently and Andre, the bird is a nose-to-nose shot of a blue footed boobie. I saw tons of them on a trip to the Sea of Cortez several years ago.

Fascinating a real bird. A boobie. Are they one of the birds that are indigenous to the Galapagos Islands?

I learn something every day in this group and many times it has nothing to do with history.

I'm a linguist, but interested in the history also. I can live just with my books, coffee and music. :) I love reading the classics, history fiction and non-fiction. By the way, I want to thank you who have created this group so comprehensive.

Tomerobber | 334 comments Hi everyone . . . I'm Tomerobber . . and I LOVE books!! I've only been posting to this site since Nov. 2011. I'm a retired nurse . . . after 42 years I decided it was probably time to start taking care of myself ;) Now I have the time to read as much as I want . . . and I've been plowing through my huge to be read pile of books. I hadn't thought about joining a particular group as I have such a large stash to get through . . . But I realized that a great many of those books were dealing with history in it's many forms so I thought . . . Hmmm, maybe this would be a good group to join.
My favorite format has become eBooks and Audiobooks although I also have print books as well. But I find the electronic media to be most satisfying . . . having the ability to alter my reading environment to suit myself is great . . . I have 9 different reading apps on my 2 iPads and 3 iTouches and I can change the font, text color, page color and size of the font at the tap of my finger. Most of them also allow me to highlight, make notes, and look up words with a dictionary feature. And my local library has made many improvements in lending electronic media as well . . . and many books can be downloaded for FREE!! I also love listening to audio versions of some books as well . . . as I can LISTEN faster than I can READ (LOL).
I'm looking forward to finding more GOODREADS with this group.

The blue footed boobie (as well as the duller brown footed boobie) is found in the Galapagos but also common in southern Baja. If you google the boobies you will get a more realistic picture of them including one of them doing their mating dance. Fun stuff.

I am Tiffany, a mother of a 6 year old boy and History graduate student in Texas (my husband is also attending graduate school for history, so things stay interesting around my house). I am rarely without a book in my hand, and usually have several books scattered in different rooms of the house to read depending on which room I am in. I have a BA in English literature and history, so my interest in books is quite wide ranged. Thank you for the add to the group, I look forward to reading the books on the lists (in between the 20 to 30 books I have to read each semester for school) and participating in the discussions :)
