Hi Laura,
welcome to the group!
And congratulations on the citation! It did work... Perfect!!!

For this club as you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment.
It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post. Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post.

As you already know, this is how the book you mentioned should look:

To End a War by Richard Holbrooke by Richard Holbrooke Richard Holbrooke

More information can be found here:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

Take a moment to read our guidelines:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

and the orientation to get you started:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Apart from all the fascinating discussions on history we also have quite a few fine threads on music - all kinds from all places.
Come and take a look/listen if you like.

If you have any questions feel free to ask any of the moderators.
Best wishes,

André

My main interests are military, political, and economic history (does that cover just about everything that has ever happened?) but just about anything other than the history of, say, hot dogs will hold my attention fast. I look forward to things and stuff...and more things.

P.S. Computers and I don't get along all that often, so hopefully all goes well.

Currently, I am finishing my Master's thesis in History. I am re-examining the role of Redeemer violence in the South during Reconstruction and its influence on the disputed U.S. presidential election of 1876.

Cheers!

I just learned a neat tidbit this last week about Foner. (I was taking a week-long seminar in NYC run by a Columbua University colleague of Foner)

Foner's grandparents allegedly ran a very popular tavern on the Lower East Side that was frequented by Trotsky before the Russian Revolution.

Al, we allow absolutely no self promotion and we ask authors to simply discuss their love of history and what interested them in joining the group versus any promotions whatsoever or any pet causes; in fact it is best not to mention any authoring without the express permission of Bentley. We are very sympathetic to many of the topics but we have to be consistent across the board with everyone. Please read the rules and guidelines specifically the section devoted to authors. The introduction thread is not for promoting causes, books or anything else being sold. All such posts whether the self promotion is blatant, veiled or even for good causes are deleted immediately.

I have a B.A. in History from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and an M.A. in Middle Eastern and North African Studies from The University of Michigan. In the Fall, I'll be applying to several doctoral programs in History. My training has been mostly in the history of the Middle East and Muslim World, but as all things are connected, I read and have read lots of other periods and regions. Thematically, I'm really interested in social and intellectual history, but I'm always open to other areas. I'm currently reading works on Greco-Roman and Chinese history.

Can anyone recommend any good books on the French and Russian Revolutions? Cold War History? Modern China?

About the books on the French Revolution, Simon Schama's book, Citizens, is considered pretty comprehensive and I thoroughly enjoyed it, too.

Citizens A Chronicle of the French Revolution by Simon Schama by Simon Schama Simon Schama

Another book, although more specialized and academic, is Mourning Glory by Marie Helene Huet.

A Concise History of the Russian Revolution by Richard Pipes by Richard Pipes

Ricky | 6 comments Hi everyone. I'm new to Goodreads and The History Book Club. I am 27-years-old, run a seasonal ice cream shop and study part time at a community college.

I am interested in reading more historical works right now. Areas of interest for me in history are Scottish, The Great Depression, and early 19th century U.S. history.

Anyone have any good reads they can reccomend for those subjects?

I will be participating in the reading/discussing of the Roosevelt book in September.

Welcome Kelly to the History Book Club. A border collie will indeed give you plenty of exercise. I too have not gotten around to putting my huge collection into goodreads and with the book group - I often wonder when I will actually get to it. Good luck with your advanced degree if you go that route.

Also a big thank you to assisting moderator Mark for jumping right in and welcoming you while at the same time adding some helpful but required links for your benefit so you get off on the right foot with the group. We do have rules and guidelines so please take a look at those links.

Nicole Welcome Kelly! An idea for getting your book collection into Goodreads is the smartphone or tablet app. It has a barcode scanner and you can set it for multiple scans and scan everything directly to the shelf of your choosing. It took me less than 30 minutes for my collection of over 200 books.

Kelly, he is a pointer. I love border collies because they are always ready and eager to do whatever you are up for. They are very smart like pointers. I have heard similar complaints about the iPhone app; better I guess to do comments with an iPad with a portable keyboard or a regular computer/laptop/notebook/desktop, etc. with a full keyboard.

I hardly ever use my iPhone for goodreads because it is virtually impossible for that stuff. It can be done but it is cumbersome.

There is a way that you can add all of your books including your vintage books; if you come across a book that is not in goodreads at all - then contact one of us and we can get you to one of the members who is a goodreads librarian; I am one myself; but I am always afraid I would goof something up. I guess I would start with the books that have an isbn first to make it easier for yourself.
