Glad to have you with us and I hope you just jump right in.

Jensen | 3 comments Thank you for the warm welcome I have received from the group. I've read the posts about proper citation so hopefully that won't be an issue.

Bentley wrote: "Hello Jensen and welcome to you and MacKenzie. What kind of dog is MacKenzie? We love animals here too. And hello to Ben too."

Mackenzie is a super-model size Chihuahua, with very long legs and a long body! Surprisingly she easily navigates from city-dog to farm-dog, first curling up with me and my book then running free with the "big" dogs at the farm. She and my horse, Ben, get along wonderfully. Ben is an American Quarter Horse (he is technically a pony due to his short stature). I am a dressage rider and Ben has been a dressage horse convert since I got him 2 1/2 years ago, after 10 years of being a western trail horse. Just as with books I could go on forever talking about my horse (and dog) but I due recall this is a history book club and not a place for my endless horsey monologues. Although, horses have played an incredible role throughout the history of mankind including the creation of this nation, maybe I'm not as off track as I thought.

Interesting side note: quarter horses were originally breed by southern gentlemen looking for a horse that would be able to work hard as well as race hard. The horses were generally raced a quarter of a mile hence the breed's name. The quarter horse is still faster than the top thoroughbred race horses at a quarter mile.

Thank you preemptively for tolerating and possibly even enjoying my long, tangental post about my horse.

-Jensen

Jensen, I enjoyed it very much and MacKenzie is such a big name; I expected that it was the name for a big Newfoundland (smile).

Really enjoyed the history lesson on quarter horses especially those named Ben (lol).

Bryan Craig Welcome, Michel. Glad you could join us.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how the books should look:

Battle Cry of Freedom The Civil War Era by James M. McPherson James M. McPherson James M. McPherson

Hmm, Jensen, a Chihuahua with long legs and a long body - would she look like a Basset on/after a killer diet?
Say Hi to Mackenzie and Ben from my part.

Michel, welcome to the group.
Apart from all the fascinating discussions on history we also have quite a few fine threads on music - all kinds from all places.
Come and take a look/listen if you like.
Best,
André

Jensen | 3 comments André wrote: "Hmm, Jensen, a Chihuahua with long legs and a long body - would she look like a Basset on/after a killer diet?"

Mackenzie actually looks more like a miniature italian greyhound with the head of a chihuahua! She's a rescue from a breeder because by Chihuahua standards she wouldn't be an acceptable show dog or even a dog the breeder wanted their name attached to her.

Bentley wrote: "and MacKenzie is such a big name; I expected that it was the name for a big Newfoundland (smile)."

Mackenzie definitely has a Napoleon complex not just from her name but from all her time spent running with the big dogs on the farm. She won't deign herself to play with other small dogs, not to mention the time she actually attacked a skunk!

Thank you, Bryan! LORD! I hope this ain't self-promotion...Foxfire has been a chief recorder of Appalachian history/heritage for 45 years. Our lifestyles have all but vanished. Nine million in print--not to bad for a bunch of high school kids with 'hillbilly' written all over us, I guess... Thanks again!!
