Angie (angiem1721) | 3 comments Hi All.

I have checked out my first ebook from the library. I'm a very slow reader and I just know I'm not going to be able to read the whole book in the 14 day time limit. Is there a way to "keep" the book until I'm done reading it. Also, I'm one of those that a book will come available but I'm not done with the current book I'm reading, is there a way to download the "borrowed" book and save it for later to read?

message 2: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mgauffant) | 86 comments Nope there isn't. Our library system used to have a 21 day option which was recently changed to 14 days.
This is when I choose to opt for the actual book, when I know a book is too long for me to request as ebook, and I only request a book at a time to avoid an overlap.
Your best bet would be to "re-request" and make a note of what page you left off at.
The book will automatically not open once your loan period is over :(

Christina (bookcrussh) | 15 comments Unfortunately, because other people can put books on hold, you can't actually keep the book for longer than the fourteen day period (at least not at my library). The books automatically time out, and you can no longer read them beyond the fourteen days. Also, once you download the book, the time starts ticking. There is the three day grace period that you are given to check out the book before it is passed to the next reader, but in your case it probably won't do you much good because you say that you are a slow reader.

Yeah, sometimes the system sucks.

message 4: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 7 comments It will automatically time out on your nook. It will still be on your nook, but you will receive an error that the time has expired. At least I know this happens with books loaded through ADE. You can request to extend the time period. I know my library allows me to extend one time.

I've found that if I leave a library book open on my Nook Classic, it will not expire. If I leave the book to open another one, the expiration will kick in. I don't know if this works for any other Nook.

message 6: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 7 comments True - if you never close it, it can't lock you out. Once you leave it, it will not allow you back in if the time is expired.

Elizabeth (fireborn) | 10 comments i'm surprised! i've been able to keep my books longer by not shutting down my nook.

This is where having two Nooks comes in very handy! ;-) I used the trick when I had a book review to finish and needed to be able to refer back to the book.

Missyb | 221 comments The coding in the book on your Nook should tell it that the time is up and keep it from opening on your Nook even if you never turn the wi-fi on again, it has nothing to do with the machine or the internet. I've rented a few books form the library and it shows up on my Nook but will not open. With my library we can choose 7, 14, or 21 days with most books. Some books only have 7 or 14 days for the choice. It depends on how new the book is, but new releases in the physical form also have a 14 day limit on them instead of the 21 days like most material from the library.

Try Nook friends or SugarSync or post it in Goodreads. Someone's bound to have the book and can loan it to you for a longer time then the library can.

I have to use ADE to put the library book on my Nook. Is it coding from the library or from ADE? Either way, I think it is the book not your Nook that makes the time limit kick in.

message 11: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 7 comments If it came from Overdrive, they are all the same books - just what your library licensed to use from OD. It evens gives you the countdown each day to let you know how long you have remaining. I usually download the book to my nook and immediately return the book to the library. As long as I don't sync again, the book is available on my nook until the time expires. I normally finish it in the allotted period so I never worry that I have to never close the book on my nook.

My experience with ADE on a Simple Touch is similar. If I do not close the book--like going to another book--then I can read to my hearts content. I did this on one of the books I checked out for 10 days.

Missyb's explanation is pretty close. From observation, the Nook only checks the DRM settings on an ADE book when it opens the book. After that, you are free to use it.

I have a few library books from Overdrive expiring soon, I'm going to do some experimenting and try to figure out what does and doesn't affect them.

Laura | 7 comments I have Nook Simple Touch and kept library books after they've expired (try reading the Game of Thrones series and finishing on time -- it's definitely a challenge). Just remember, as others have said, don't leave the book you are reading and open another book. Also, do not turn your nook off or do anything like change the font, font-size, etc. (That's how I lost a book before I was finished).

Karen Sandler (ksandler) | 5 comments How do you get a library ebook?

message 17: by willaful, dedicated nookworm (new)

Simple rundown: go to your public library website or ask them if they subscribe to any ebook services. (Though if they don't have a website, it's pretty unlikely they would!)

If the subscribe to a service run by OverDrive, you'll need to download Adobe Digital Editions (they'll have a download link) and make sure it's registered to the same email account as your B&N Nook account.

If they use something other than OverDrive, give up now, you'll never be able to figure it out. follow the instructions on the site and Good luck! ;-)

One ADE is downloaded and registered, go to the Overdrive site on your home computer, follow their check out instructions. When you click the download button, pick "Open with Adobe Digital Editions." (Unless it is an Open epub, that's slightly different, but they aren't that common yet.) That will unlock the book and put it in ADE. You can then plug in your Nook and transfer it. (This step seems to work differently for different people. I use a Mac computer, and I need to plug in my Nook first and then open ADE. Other people say the opposite.)

Okay, the results of my experiement with an expired ebook which I left open on the Nook Touch:

-- changing the font on the ebook, no effect

-- plugging the Nook into the charger, no effect

-- plugging the Nook into the computer, message appeared that the book had expired and it went to my library.

I have another book that expires in 5 hours, if there's anything else someone would like me to try.

Well, this is interesting. For the second experiment, I found I could leave the book, go to my library or home, and still be able to access the book. I forgot to see if I could open another book and then go back to that one. Another time.

I like your instructions. I've heard bad things about library systems that use something other then OverDrive. Lucky for my, my library system uses OD.

Glad I could help. OverDrive has some of its own issues, but it's better than anything else I've tried. The field is really open for a good ebook library service.

In my experience you can go to the home screen, look at your library, etc., but you can't change your book. I don't remember if this was a fluke or if there was something weird about opening my book again (after being on the home screen or library) that one way opened the book again and the other way I lost it (meaning, opening it either using book icon in Reading Now or the little open book icon in the bar in the top left corner of the Nook Touch). Maybe that's worth testing?

You mentioned in your other post above that you tried changing the font and there was no effect. Did you try changing the size of the font? Doing one of those did cause me to lose my book in the past.

I forgot to mention in my previous post the thing about not hooking your nook up to your computer.

I actually meant changing the size. No problem. Were you using the Nook Touch? I don't think I could do it on the Classic, though mine is loaned out so I can't check it.

I have another book coming due -- I borrow way too many ebooks! -- so I'll check on opening another book in a few days.

Yes, I was using Nook Touch.

message 26: by Laura (new)

Laura | 7 comments I realized I had a library book that was due today at 2:00 PM. I made sure I left that book open and I just tested it. The first thing I tried was going to the home screen then opening the book using the icon of the book in the Reading Now section of the home screen. It failed. The message saying the book expired appeared on the screen. I was going to test opening it with the open book icon that's in the bar at the top left of the nook as well, but obviously couldn't.

Was your wifi turned on? I had meant to experiment with that, but forgot about it. Mine was turned off.

No, it was off. I don't remember if in the past I ever tried anything with it on or not.

Do you remember which way you opened you book up again after going to your home screen? Did you say you have Nook Touch? I'd be curious to see if something worked for you but didn't for me.

(I've moved this to the technical folder.)

I went to the library, opened it from there. Then I went to the home page and opened it from the reading now icon.

I can only guess that some books include expiration info coding and some don't.

Okay, today I went into the library, opened another book, and then tried to open an expired book. Got the message "this book has expired."

But I don't know if I could've done any of the other stuff. I guess I'll have to check out that same book that let me open it again and see what happens. ;-)

message 31: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 41 comments I used to be able to turn off wifi on my Nook HD and keep reading the book that was currently open (not if it wasn't already open) for weeks. But then Overdrive updated, and it can sense an expired book within the app without Internet connection now. On older devices, the update probably didn't change as much.

Tips: each library has different policies. Mine is 14 days regardless, and I can renew as many times as I want unless someone is on the holds list. When someone places a hold, I can place a hold so I get it back at the end of the time.
Overdrive itself will remember the bookmarks, so make sure you leave a bookmark when it expires.
