Redd Kaiman (reddkaiman) | 6 comments Hi all,

This was actually an answer to a question asked in early May (on getting fans in America) that I've posted at my blog:

Basically, if you want to get fans in other countries, you should try to be yourself while being aware of the local flavor.

Tell me what you think.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good points but I'd also mention that it's a good idea to lurk a bit and get the 'flavour' of a forum before posting.

It's all too possible to alienate potential fans inadvertently.

Andrew Lawston (andrewlawston) | 1774 comments I also think you should choose your battles. I've got friends in America, I've visited, it's a totally adequate continent, and there's a common language. Fine, I'll put in a bit of effort. In Europe though, it's a different story.

I'm fluent in French, and French existentialism is a massive influence on my writing. So it was a very obvious decision to frequent Francophone forums and get to know people, etc, even though my book's in English. And, bingo, I was briefly no 10 in my category on Amazon.fr.

Play to your strengths. I've sold precisely zero copies in Germany and, aside from resolving to write a quick message to my three German friends, I'm totally relaxed about that.

The upside for me is that not only is it easier for me to promote in markets where I have a genuine interest, it also reduces the chance of alienating potential fans. I genuinely love French culture, and people will forgive the odd mis-step if there's obvious passion there.
