Andrew Montooth (andrewmontooth) | 12 comments I found two entries for the book "Deadly Straits" that were separated because the paperback has spaces in the author's initials which created a second (unnecessary) entry. I read up on "Combine" versus "Merge" but am too new to understand how this is done. Is there a "merge" button? Do I copy/paste info and delete? Not sure.

Books
Kindle: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12...
Paperback: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12...

Author
Spaces: http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
Correct:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12...

Thanks, Andrew

Kim | 607 comments Needs a super to combine the author profiles.

message 3: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 7 comments I also have a bunch of books that need authors to be combined. Can I list them here to have them combined?
Here is the initial one.
Togashi, Yoshihiro
義博 富樫

Periklis | 18 comments Got #3 (merged & books properly combined)
On #1, the books mentioned seem fixed, but I couldn't find the author pages linked. Any help from a super would be appreciated.

message 5: by Lisa (last edited May 31, 2012 07:56PM) (new)

Lisa | 7 comments Sorry, I listed the wrong one. I guess they are all mixed up because of the first name & last name (Japanese always list last name first)
Yoshihiro Togashi
Togashi, Yoshihiro - 富樫, 義博
Thank you!

Periklis | 18 comments (Got #5) Author merged but a few duplicate works may need a super to merge or remove them.

Merging the various English versions of the author's profile is good, but please DO NOT merge profiles in other languages into English ones, or vice versa.

It looks like you may have undone quite a bit of other librarians' work. :(

I sincerely apologise!!! I should (and WILL) be much more careful (and less enthusiastic) in the future. Again, I am deeply sorry...

Lisa | 7 comments Is there a way to combine editions in different languages with the author's name also in a different language? There is a lot of manga editions out there in many languages (including non-published fan translations from the internet) and MOST of the entries are incorrect regarding title format. How should one go about having all the different published editions in different languages show up when a person searches the author's name?

Lisa wrote: "Is there a way to combine editions in different languages with the author's name also in a different language?"

What we do in those cases is put the English name as primary, and any other language names as secondary authors. That way they can be combined, but will show up on searches and on both profiles.

message 11: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 2462 comments When an author's name is in several languages, we treat the two names as separate authors. As a manga example:

Love Hina, Volume 1 is attributed to both Ken Akamatsu and 赤松 健 - so a search for either name will bring it up.

message 12: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 7 comments So how do I go about doing this when entering an author's name? separate them with a comma? Also can this information be added to the librarian's manual?

message 13: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
Each author must be added on a separate line.

The manual is a work in progress. I believe this item is on my list of things to add.

I noticed this entry is english: first name "ken" last name "Akamatsu", and japanese: last name "赤松" first name "健". I think this makes sense because when looking up an author in japanese, no one will use the us way, but will it cause issues in the future?

message 15: by Periklis (new)

It shouldn't make a difference. A search for Ken Akamatsu or Akamatsu Ken will bring up the same results. Likewise for the Japanese characters.

Thanks, I'll just start adding instead. Also do you happen to know the html for referring to another author in the details?

message 19: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 2462 comments Remove the extra spaces between the <> tags, but it look like this:

< a href="[URL OF AUTHOR]"> [ALTERNATE NAME] < /a>

It's also in the "some html is ok" box above posts for quick reference.

Librarian changing author's names to mixed languages. Anyone want to help change them back? I have sent her a message.

message 21: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (_superv) | 8 comments Very sorry about this. Murakami was probably the biggest damage.
I did update 2 other Japanese authors today, and can change them back

Chris (chrisnolanca) | 7 comments I'm a new 'librarian' and was fixing up an incorrectly entered author name.

http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
to
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

as per http://www.goodreads.com/librarian_ma...

However I was unclear as to what will happen to the old author profile? Is there some other process that cleans it out if there are no works associated? What about the fans that he has on under the wrong name (which I would have said was the right name too... so any way for searches for the wrong name to call up the right name?).

Thanks

message 24: by Amara (last edited Aug 06, 2012 04:43PM) (new)

Amara Tanith (aftanith) If you merge the author profiles, the fans (and books, quotes, and other things) will be transferred to the profile you marked as the correct spelling. The incorrectly spelled profile will cease to exist (having been assimilated into the correct one).

If a profile is left without any books, fans, quotes, or anything at all attached to it, there's a script that will eventually clean it up. But since there are fans attached in this case, this particular profile would just hang around until someone merged it.

message 25: by Krystal109 (last edited Aug 06, 2012 04:46PM) (new)

Krystal109 | 1086 comments OH goodie. Does that mean we have to go back and manually fix the Japanese name now? I got spare time to do this and spend most of my time with manga and other Japanese works.

I'll go through and clean up everything by that author that got merged on accident.

message 26: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrisnolanca) | 7 comments Thanks Amara. Turns out I had mis-read the instructions. I had edited the book entries to have the correct author name -- instead of editing the author entry to have the matching name. I've done that now and see the merging prompt.

message 27: by Ammie (new)

Ammie | 4 comments I'm a new Librarian and I hope that someone has not already mentioned this but I was importing a list of book and some were added twice because the arthur is listed incorrectly (St.John, Cheryl and John, Cheryl St).

message 28: by Krystal109 (new)

Krystal109 | 1086 comments If you can point these with links out we can combine and merge any duplicate books/authors.

message 29: by Amara (new)

Amara Tanith (aftanith) If you can link us to the incorrect profiles, Ammie, someone can fix them for you.

As for how to prevent this from occurring, I'm not quite sure, unfortunately. I've never imported books before.

message 31: by Amara (new)

Amara Tanith (aftanith) Merged into the correct version. If you come across more, please let us know! :)

Natasha is a Book Junkie (natashaisabookjunkie) | 16 comments There are 2 versions of the same book:

1. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13...
2. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15...

Version #1 is the correct one (properly connected to the series through the author's page). It is no longer untitled - the title should be changed to "Reckless".

Version #2 should be either deleted or merged with version #1.

Thanks!
~ N

Sana (sanashams) | 76 comments Hey I was adding books covers when I saw that the author had a duplicate page.

This is apparently the original: Alan M. Gratz
Duplicate: Alan Gratz

Thanks

Susie (dragonsusie) | 2469 comments Sana wrote: "Hey I was adding books covers when I saw that the author had a duplicate page.

That's because the main author for a work is listed by the name which is shown on the cover. I checked a few of the covers and it appears that the correct name is listed on the second one you listed, not the first!

So I've therefore merged them both into this one and combined books where necessary.

message 37: by Heather (new)

Heather Cawte (heathercawte) | 2 comments I could absolutely kick myself, but I've created two entries for the same book - Crippen's secret! Or the Doctor and the Demons

The one to keep is the one with my review attached, not the one that has my review in the description section. Yes, I was having a bad day!

Not only that - that exclamation point in the title should be a comma. Please could someone change that for me?

Many thanks. I'm now going back to bed and hiding under the covers until it's tomorrow.....

message 38: by Susie (new)

Susie (dragonsusie) | 2469 comments #37:

Heather, it doesn't matter which one has your review on, as the merge will mean that your review is transfered, anyway (I can't see your review at present, but it does take some time to update).

Also, for reference, the information contained within the description field shouldn't contain reviews or spoilers, and should just be the description, either obtained from the book itself or from Amazon or WorldCat or another permissible source (I'm guessing that was further confusion?!).

I've checked and updated information from Amazon, including adding the cover, and have deleted the duplicate.

message 39: by Heather (new)

Heather Cawte (heathercawte) | 2 comments Thanks, Susie. I did know about the description not being my review, I just completely spaced out and forgot. Like I said - not a good day. I'm glad it's right now. thanks again.
