The Importance of Being Ernest by Tim Black
Hemingway scholars have long postulated on the whereabouts of Hadley’s valise, a satchel containing several of Hemingway’s early manuscripts. Yes, his first wife lost the valise on her way to join Papa in Pamplona for a little bull dodging, but did she lose it or was it stolen? Pilfered by someone who had a grudge against young Ernest Hemingway?
In The Importance of Being Ernest, an untenured literature professor, facing the peril of “publish or perish,” travels from Key West to Paris in pursuit of Hadley’s valise, only to discover the bastard child of a Left Bank literary legend as well as the answer to the question: what happened to Hadley’s valise?
