Don't you hate it when people put spoilers in discussion threads?

Jenny I have been reading some discussion threads about A Clash of Kings (and also some Game of Thrones ones as well). I've noticed that for some of the Book#2 threads, people put spoilers for the later books. Why? Why do you want to spoil it for those who have not read the rest of the series? There are so many internet forums for these types of discussions. You can also start discussion threads for the later books. Those who read the discussion threads want to participate without fear of spoilers. Shame on those who spoil it for the rest of us.

I know I'm not alone in thinking this.

Sid Yes, definitely agree!!!

Kirby THANK you!

I knew to stay away from the YA threads until I'd finished a series (e.g., the hunger games) b/c a lot of teenagers just are not able to contain themselves...but I thought that the adult threads would be safer...

Viktoriya this is why I don't read any discussions until i am done with that particular book. That's kind of one of the things that bothers me a little about goodreads: the moment I put some book on one of my shelves (especially if its TBR shelf), i see ALL discussions about this book. I think it would be better if those discussions become available after the book is marked "read", or at least give me an option not to see them until im done with the book...

Beth A. Yup,not really into game of thrones but, looks like I don't have to read world war z now. It's probably better to stick to reviews for particular need to know before I read it stuff.

Slightly off topic, I'm also a bit irked at Wikipedia for this sort of thing...it happened before I found good reads.

I don't read book discussions until I've finished that particular book too. However, if I've finished book number 2 in a series I don't want to see spoilers for book number 3 in book 2's discussion thread.

Mia It's even worse when people put the spoiler IN THE SUBJECT LINE so even skimming the discussion topics (which includes books marked "to-read") gets you spoiled for major plot points.

message 9: by Buffy (new) - added it

Buffy Yes, this really upset me too. I just finished CoK and for some idiotic reason thought that it would be ok to read the discussion threads for this book. So I clicked on an interesting looking topic about who your most hated character is. For some reason this made people not only list the characters they LIKE the most but to talk about character PoVs in the next books. That's pretty spoilerific in my view and I kicked myself for being so trusting. Don't read those threads if you haven't read the third book yet.

message 10: by Sid (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sid I'm currently onto the third book. I would like to look up some stuff in regards to the chronology of events, but I'm afraid that they would be full of spoilers. I will have to resist until I am up to date, but by that time I probably won't need the info.

Michael Offutt I would think that the reason people look at discussion threads is to "discuss the book that I have read". I mean...what's the point in discussing something that we haven't read? So to that end, I'm all right with spoilers. I guess I feel that people shouldn't go looking at discussion threads when they haven't read the book.

Michael, perhaps you should READ what this discussion is about before making a comment. This is for a SERIES of books. If I've read book #1, then look up discussions for it, I don't want to see spoilers for books #2 -#5 when I haven't read them yet. Spoilers for later books should be in their respective discussion thread.

Michael Offutt Sid wrote: "Michael wrote: "I would think that the reason people look at discussion threads is to "discuss the book that I have read". I mean...what's the point in discussing something that we haven't read? So..."

Ummm...I guess I don't understand, Sid, why you are so hostile? My comment is in line with the rest of the thread and supports essentially your previous comment on resisting the urge to look at discussions until you are all caught up. Anyway, I guess a "discussion" between us is pointless as you no doubt will be offended with anything I have to say and respond in all caps. Ciao.

Kirby Michael wrote: "Sid wrote: "Michael wrote: "I would think that the reason people look at discussion threads is to "discuss the book that I have read". I mean...what's the point in discussing something that we have..."

well, I know that it's a sensitive subject for ME, as I've had books completely ruined by the carelessness of others.

sid wasn't saying that he/she was fine with having to avoid all of the discussions, just that he/she is forced to- as am I. I just do not understand why (especially with a series as massive as this one!) people like sid and I should be excluded from the discussions until we've finished every last word. people can't find enough to say about books 1 and 2 in a thread about 2? fine- go to book 5's threads and discuss. or, if you just can't help yourself- hide it in a spoiler tag! that is what they're made for!

hell, people even put spoilers for books not even remotely related to the book under discussion. I've never read the harry potter books and don't go to those discussion, but I know exactly which characters die and how it ends.

Michael Offutt Kirby wrote: "Michael wrote: "Sid wrote: "Michael wrote: "I would think that the reason people look at discussion threads is to "discuss the book that I have read". I mean...what's the point in discussing someth..."

I definitely see your point, Kirby. Truthfully, I hadn't given it much thought until I started reading this discussion thread. I know that when I discuss book(s) in a series from now on, I shall limit my knowledge to the book at hand in order to participate in a meaningful exchange.

ah, we (potential spoilees) really appreciate that! if only we could trust other people to do the same!
:(

Michael, I wasn't trying to be hostile. I was using capital letters to EMPHASISE my point (but I guess italics would have been better?). Kirby basically said what I was thinking (although Kirby did it in a more eloquent way). Anyway, I still think that your comment was not in line with the original comment thread. You said that you were ok with spoilers. Yes, people should not read discussions until they have finished the book, but what about other books in the series? That was what Jenny was saying earlier. I respect your opinion, but it is pretty hard to argue FOR (oops, there are those darned caps again), for spoiling books, particularly for books that are heavily plot driven like ASOIAF.

Graeme Skinner Agree - I have found this happen a couple of times on the discussion threads in particular around the Song of Ice and Fire series... also people seem to elude to the TV series a lot in these discussions where it has deviated from the books.... but that's going slightly Off Topic here...

Yes it is annoying when you have read book 1 & 2, and go to talk about book 2 in a discussion thread about book 2, only to find lots of spoilers about book 3 in there.... A shame that people can't keep it to themselves, but sadly the internet is full of people who are happy to "troll" and spoil other peoples enjoyment, most of the time on purpose...

The best solution? Don't read the discussions till you've finished all the books if you don't want to risk spoilers....

The problem is though, that I enjoy talking about the book I have just read with others who have done the same...
