Wendy wrote: "Thanks Ssra, I'll check these out. I would really like a cassette Walkman style." Wendy, I've looked high and low for a walkman style cassette player, and they are hard to find in working condition. Target, for the past couple of years, carries a small tape boombox for around $10. Some stores did carry a pretty basic tape walkman, but I haven't seen those in all target stores (I think they are leftover mech, lol). Also, Kmart carries an upgraded version with CD/MP3 options. Lastly, Walmart is a hit/miss for me for tape players. I think it depends on the size of the store. Good luck, and let us know what you find.

If people do not see your headphones they really give you funny looks. LOL
Sometimes I listen on my Zune while I'm walking around the grocery store... funny/super sad/scary/etc. books sure are interesting to listen to in public, aren't they??? ;)
Usually before I go to bed. I have an ipod dock and I stick it in there and listen to it aloud. Other times I listen while cleaning or cooking, but that is usually only on the weekends.
I've laughed out loud listening to books, and then looked around to see if there were strange looks my way, but didn't detect any (more than usual).

Every time I go to Walmart I check there and well keep checking.
Do you equivalents to chain pharmacies (essentially Woolworths-of-old with pharmacy depts) in the States: Rite Aid, Walgreens, etc.? Those chains carry (or did last I checked) generic Walkmen for around $10.
I often listen to funny things at work, and every once in a while I just can't help but laugh. My coworkers think I'm a little strange - but who cares? Now sad books - those are bad. I hate crying in public, or even worse, crying on the drive in to work!
I listen in my car going to/from work and at work. I find I can get things done and hear a good book at the same time.
Mostly to/from work for me too. I used to listen to ABC News on my commute. But since the radio stations switched to digital, they don't broadcast TV stations anymore. I really don't like the talk radio stations in my area, so I started listening to books. Luckily my car has both a tape and a cd player.
Hi. I'm Lindalee, a new member. I walk with a cane and for distance use a mobility scooter. I use my scooter to go to the library, grocery store, dvd store, etc.... I listen to books on my ipod on my scooter. I use headphones and have it in both ears-but I know I can hear sirens, etc.... I figure people jog with headphones-so I can use my scooter with them.
And to people listening in the car who don't have a mp3 plug in on their car radio: neither do I. What I did is buy a thing that plugs into the car power plug that you can then plug small electrical devices into. I got a cd player that has a mp3 plug in. I plug it into the device and listen that way.
I have a pair of tiny $20 speakers that run on batteries. Not very loud but they do the trick. If you're going to go this route, make sure any speakers you buy run on batteries, otherwise they sound like a car ran over them.
I'm always listening to an audio book in my car, and while cleaning or doing other chores. I've tried listening before I go to sleep, but that doesn't work. I end up falling asleep at some point and wake up to realize the CD has finished playing, I don't know where, and the next day I have to listen all over again to find out where I was. It gets confusing.I also listen while taking daily walks in the park or working in my craft room.
I listen while knitting, household chores. I wish I could listen in the car, but I get so focused on driving and what is going on around me that I miss a lot of the book. I've tried listening while exercising and didn't enjoy it, but that was before I really got hooked on audiobooks. May have to try that again. And maybe I'm a bit paranoid, but I can't listen while doing yard work. There is a lot of foot traffic in my neighborhood and I want to be able to hear if someone is approaching.
I have tried to listen to audio books while doing almost every task in my life. I've been reasonably successful except for tasks that required word usage, either written or vocal. For example, I have repeatedly tried to read the paper while listening to an audio book. I can do it except that after 30 seconds I will either know what I read, or I will know what I heard, but never both. Listening to radio or TV while listening to books creates similar problems. And listening to a book while my wife is talking to me, that is not permitted.
I am also a electric cart user when shopping. Many times I will plug in one ear of my headset while shopping.My latest new listening area is listening from the hard drive while I wait for my MP3 player to recharge. (I just hate it when the book is longer than the battery charge and I only have one chapter left when the power runs out:{

I have one of those old cassette-tape-to-CD converters for my car (from back before cars came standard with CD players and you had to bring your portable CD player with you in your car...), and it works (although not with very good quality). I do that when my husband's in the car, since he FREAKS OUT when I drive with earbuds in, even though it's NOT illegal in Texas, like he thinks it is.
I did the same thing for around the house. I bought a small CD player/radio thing from Walmart for $20. It plugs into the wall and has an mp3 plug in the back. That's nice for when I've got a massive headache from having earbuds in all day... ;) OR when the hubby wants to listen, too...
I tried two different "thingies" that plug into the power outlet and play over the radio but neither one was worth listening to so I went back to the single ear plug.
I listen during my commute, doing the housework and, as a recent audio addict, I now use my iPod earphones when grocery shopping rather than being assaulted by "elevator muzak". If a book is gripping, however, I will go to bed, turn off the lights and listen until the suns comes up, and even after.
I listen 8 hours a day 7 days a week. Or at least very nearly. My work allows for a lot of audiobook listening. I blog about it

Would love to hear from others who can listen to audiobooks while working.
Kit, That's a lot of audio books! I think I'd miss the interaction with others throughout the day. Still a bit envious though!
Well, I don't know if Im the only one? but I listen to them while cooking! specially if its something I need to stand over and watch, stir or takes a long time to prepare....in fact sometimes I end up making the meal for that night AND getting the meal ready for the next night, if its a good book and I want an excuse to listen to it longer :)

I too am lucky enough to listen at work but most days I can't listen the entire time because I have to stop and check out books!
Being a designer and a photographer most of my people interaction is done via email, so I'm lucky enough to be able to listen to audiobooks every wakign moment, and some days I do...lol.
@chris "That's a lot of audio books! I think I'd miss the interaction with others throughout the day. Still a bit envious though!"Chris, you are quite right. My work is of a solitary nature though.
I have nobody to interact with.
I could try talking to the animals and plants I work with, but I suspect they will not talk back.
This job will be over soon though, on to something a little less full on hopefully. I will miss the books though.

I enjoyed reading a few of your blog posts. Thanks for the thoughtful reads.
I listen in the car, when I'm cooking, doing housework, when I'm sewing or knitting. I prefer music when running or walking

While walking to work, in the car if traffic's not bad, on the plane, and in waiting rooms.
Well I'm retired now . . so I can listen whenever I want . . . I've been trying to squeeze in some of my audiobooks between getting ready for a book discussion that's starting on Monday. And I'm signed for another book discussion that will be starting in Oct. and another one that will be starting in Nov.My problem is that they are all historical books that are in different time periods . . . some days I'll be in ancient Rome with Caesar, some days in the early days of the US with Thomas Jefferson, and some days in the days of LBJ presidency after Kennedy's assassination.
I think I may just become schizophrenic after all of this . . . Haaaahaaaaaa . .
Javasapien wrote: " By, S.G's standard I qualify as a true audioholic! :) ..."Me too, listening right now and am not listening only when I cannot.
Listen with my Clip+ daily and through an Aux cable when in the car. I deliberately stop for the morning radio news, even when I don't really want to, and that's it.
LOL
Haha Tomerobber!
I listen when walking to and from work and at work as I work on my own going from site to site... and if particularly hooked while on the computer instead of music :0 Time passes so quickly especially if doing a particularly tedious job liking ironing... being greedy if not listening I am reading on my kindle...
I used to have a job (involved a lot of sorting/scanning/filing paperwork) where I could listen while I worked - it was the best thing about that job! I got through tons of audiobooks and podcasts that way.Now I can't listen at work (librarian) and my commute is much shorter, so I go through audiobooks slowly. I usually have one book going in the car (on CD) and one book (on my phone) that I listen to while cooking, cleaning, and exercising.
I listen to audiobooks during my daily commute and also on weekends while I work around the house.I agree, Sharon... with a good audiobook, even ironing can be enjoyable!
For those of you who can listen to audiobooks while working, we are still looking or contributors over at Working by Torchlight. Thanks allhttp://workingbytorchlight.wordpress....
I mostly listen on my commute to and from work or anytime I'm driving (alone) somewhere. I also listen at my desk at work. Rarely do I listen at home since I tend to have distractions that make it pointless since I'd miss a lot and have to keep rewinding... =)
CommutingWalking
Cooking
Cleaning
Hanging out Laundry
Walking the dog
Before I fall asleep
Gardening
Getting ready for work
Shopping, and ...
When I want to ignore my husband : )
I listen every chance I get, everywhere I go, whatever I am doing, I have to have my Ipod with me at all times. If that makes me an Audioholic then so be it! ;)

Edit: I think that one only takes batteries... And D batteries are expensive! http://www.amazon.com/jWIN-Portable-B... this one can be plugged into the wall.
Edit 2: OR you can just get a WALKMAN!!! *bahahahaha* http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SRF-59-Rad... ... There's a detachable belt clip!! ;) Takes only 1 AA battery!
