Another vague memory of a book

Right, I read a trilogy of fantasy fiction books many moons ago, and the general plot popped into my head last night. Now, this may end up being a mishmash of several different books but I don't think so. here goes.

the king has a servant who is responsible for the lighting of the castle and there is a prophecy that says the son of a man that doesn't burn will become ruler. the king sees servant put his hand into molten candle wax without pain as he is callused from years of dealing with wax.King realises he is from prophecy so has him killed, son saves king so king has to let him live, but king becomes twisted and the forces of darkness rise. in the last book I think the young hero has become king, but the evil one possesses his son and they fight it out.

Very vague I know, but I think the whole light/candle thing is one of the main themes of the story, and I have a feeling the writer had a surname beginning with H.
