Jack (tomesandtravel) | 76 comments Hi there fellow booktubers! :)

I'm Jack from my channel ReadingWithJack, which can be found right here: http://www.youtube.com/ReadingWithJack

So, I thought it'd be interesting to know when and why you all started your channels: did someone inspire you?; did you just want to join in all the fun?; let's find out!

For me, I started in February of this year and I'm now at 200+ subscribers which is really awesome and I can't thank people enough! I had another channel before which was called TheDougieowner, though I wanted a fresh start this year and I've really improved since starting. I think my old account was created in April 2011 and I used to be pretty scared of filming... (Was this the case with others - the first video was so awkward and scary?)

I was inspired by my good friend George from BookAddict2011 (http://www.youtube.com/BookAddict2011) and she started doing book reviews and book hauls; they looked like so much fun - I desperately wanted to get involved so I did! I remember filming my first video a few times before deciding that I was going to upload, but I did eventually and I've loved the community ever since. There's others that've inspired me too, but that's the main one.

Thanks to everyone in the book community by the way, everyone's so awesome and understanding (especially when you're starting out!)

message 2: by Charley (new)

Charley Cook (charleyreads) | 2 comments I started doing my videos properly in november last year (although i'd done a few before, but not seriously) and so far i have nearly 150 subscribers and i'm so amazed with every single one :D
I started vlogging because i was always a book nerd and when i discovered there was a booktubing community it made me so happy to realise there were other people out there like me. The community spirit is so great and everyone i've met through it has always been so pleasant.
During my first few videos i was so nervous i would shake through the whole thing and made someone else edit it because i couldn't stand the sound of my own voice. Now i record the videos in front of my boyfriend and edit them myself. I think confidence is something that comes with time, after 30 videos i think you get over the fact sometimes you will sound stupid or make silly faces. You've just gotta remember people are watching book videos to hear about books, not judge you on anything else.

message 3: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte (charrfrears) There were so many people who inspired me to start my booktube channel that I can barely count. I adored Priscilla's (TheReadables) channel and also Rosianna at missxrojas- even though she's not strictly a booktuber. But it was eventually Joseph (thebooktubenator) and Jessica and Stacy (chapterchicks) who inspired me to finally begin my channel.

My lack of a high quality camera prevented me from beginning my channel for a long time, but when I had watched quite a lot of videos, I noticed that not all channels were the best quality- and people still watched them! This gave me the confidence to be able to enter the community, because I knew that the people cared more about the books, reviews and hauls etc, than the quality of the camera. I wanted to be a part of that community!

So at the start of May this year, I decided that I was going to make my channel a reality and so came charrandthebookshelf. I started two weeks ago on the 5th of May and I've gained 20 subsribers since then and have posted 8 videos.

I really enjoy making my videos, as books have always been such a passion of mine, and comments from viewers are always so lovely. They make me want to carry on with what I'm doing. Hopefully I'll get a better camera soon, though, so that other's enjoyment is better.

Please, check me out at: http://www.youtube.com/user/charrandt...

message 4: by Rincey (new)

Rincey (rinceya) I just started about a week ago! haha I think it is because within the past few months I discovered the "book tube" world. Some of my early favorites were "booksandsquills," "thereadables," "elizziebooks," and "mothereffingbooks." As I watched more videos, I really just wanted to join the community and discussion because I love talking about books and talking with other people about books. Obviously I am just getting started but I already love it so much.

I have just joined literally Goodreads and Youtube today and I am currently in the process of uploading my first introduction & book haul - why am I so nervous!?

I always watch book reviews and I just felt that I needed to join!

Georgina Howlett (georginahowlett) | 1 comments I don't actually know who inspired me to begin booktubing myself. As Jack said, I inspired him (I'm George from BookAddict2011) but after that, I'm not really sure. I suppose it would have to be the people I watched before I signed up, so people like Debra from DebrasBookCafe and Kaisa from MaxieMagyx. People like that, I guess.

The channel I use for everything is BookAddict2011 (http://www.youtube.com/user/BookAddic...)

I also have just made a new channel on which I'll be posting specifically Book related videos (http://www.youtube.com/user/TheBritis...)

Jay Daily Reads (loquaciousreaders) | 2 comments Hello! My name is Janeth and I started my channel two months ago I believe, but I officially started putting up videos at a normal pace last month. So I am a fairly new BookTuber, and the reason I started to "BookTube" is because I loved how people could put up their opinions up on YouTube and this book community was growing. So I just thought to myself I like reading, I have opinions... Why not share them with world. Though I am camera shy... One day I film myself and posted it to the internet... and I'm having fun with it... so far :D

You could find my at:

message 8: by Milly (new)

Milly Webster Hello, My name is Milly and Jack you already know that, but for the benefit of others, I'm going to say it. I started book tubing toward the end of February and I've never looked back. I've met some of the most interesting people through this and they all inspired me to start book tubing myself, but of course Jack you were one of the most influential. Here is my Channel - http://www.youtube.com/user/GuitarMil... and I hope to see you all soon!

message 9: by Caleb (last edited Jul 27, 2012 04:27PM) (new)

Caleb Ross (calebjross) I started posting book videos a few months ago, but was recently re-invigorated when I discovered Ophelia Dagger's channel. Check it out if you love intelligence and humor packed brilliantly into book videos.

Since finding her videos, I've changed up my channel a bit to be more "energetic." See here if you care to: http://www.youtube.com/user/calebjross

My latest video review is for Room by Emma Donoghue. Spoiler alert: it's great!

message 10: by Zahra (new)

Zahra (zahra_d) I started booktubing about a month ago, here's a link to my channel TheHighAspirer - http://www.youtube.com/user/thehighas...
I think what inspired me was knowing how supportive the booktubing community is. I'd been wanting to make book review videos for a while and I did this on my blog, but I tell you this - it was never as fulfilling as making a video!
I'm so glad that the booktubing community has genuinely nice people and it is easy to make friends with them all - barely any of my friends read so it was nice to converse with people who have something in common with me.
For me the YouTuber that inspired me was not a booktuber, but make-up guru FleurDeForce ( http://www.youtube.com/user/FleurDeFo... ) it's pretty strange, I know, but seeing how comfortable she was in front of the camera and seeing how much she enjoyed doing it motivated me to do this myself.
I'm so glad that i started doing this and I will continue to do so!
I'd love to know what else motivated people to make videos, e.g. friends or other booktubers :)

message 11: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pattiecakesTB) (pattiecakestb) i really enjoyed watching other booktubers and i thought that maybe i would give it a try as well. i really enjoy making them. its kind of funny because when i get home from work i go straight back to "work" editing videos or looking up new info or just plain reading. i for some reason like calling it work, its more fun that way for me

Samara | 1 comments I started about a month and a half ago. My friend and I wanted to make a channel but it didn't work out so I made my own. I read so much I just said "why not?" I mostly reviews young-adult books and a few classics :3 I don't have many video views/subscribers, but it's still fun!
The link to my channel is here if you would like to check like to check it out~ http://www.youtube.com/user/thischarm...

I have always loved reading. I have an addiction to books of all kinds. I am always buying them and after discovering the book reading comunity I wanted to get involved, yet just never really got around to doing anything. Yet now I have.

I started around about the middle of this year, not exactly sure when.

I love showing you all my books and finding new books to read from everyone. Although my channel isn't just about books here it is http://www.youtube.com/user/EmmaAmyPi...
I really go into this after finding so many amazing booktubers on Youtube. I am working on a few reviews of books that I have devoured over and over. Hope to see you all there.

message 14: by Lucinda (new)

Lucinda | 10 comments Hi, I'm Lucinda and I first started booktubing in July this year. I guess I started because I love to read, and because most of the people I was already subscribed to liked and read the same types of books that I read, particularly ones in the YA genre. I'm a fairly shy person so I guess it was hard at first to talk to the camera (or my iPod lol) but I'm gradually getting used to it! My channel is www.youtube.com/lushladyluce

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I began in September 2011 (wow!! That's ages ago now!!) because I just wanted to have some fun. Halfway through, I started losing viewers and I couldn't figure out why.

Then a publisher, Bancroft Press with the wonderful Harrison Demchick sent me my first ARC, The Understory by Elizabeth Leiknes... I got my blurb on the back and from then on things have been getting better and better!

I am now reading an amazing ARC called What We Saw At Night.

message 16: by Nici (new)

Nici Hello guys. I started booktubing in September 2012 because I really enjoyed all the book related videos on YT. It felt good to get to know people who love books as much as I do and I thought to myself, why not? And it could help with my shyness.

If you want you can check out my channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/meedory), I always like to communicate with people that are book crazy :)

message 17: by Auggie (new)

Auggie (auggietalk) I started vlogging in 2011, but nothing serious. I only posted a couple of videos in about a year and a half span. At the time it gave me something to do.

Once I started book blogging last year I picked it up again for book haul videos. It was so much fun that I made a new years resolution to post more videos, including video book reviews.

So, now I've joined the bookvlog world and I'm finding so many great review youtube channels. It's gonna be fun!

Find me here: https://www.youtube.com/user/Auggustine

Janelli | 1 comments I started book vlogging a week ago because I love to read and I thought it would be fun so I started a channel with my best friend.

message 19: by Shiya (last edited Jan 16, 2013 03:28PM) (new)

Shiya (shiya510) I started vlogging about two weeks ago. I love books but no one around me cares, so I have no one to talk to. At least on youtube I can gush about books and at least one person will agree. Although it is hard to discuss a book and not spoil it. My youtube channel is:
http://www.youtube.com/user/shiya510?...

message 20: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (krystalamanda) hey i'm amanda from youtube.com/krystalamanda16 and i just recently started book reviews/etc and i like to booktube because not many people my age like to read, and i enjoy finding other people who do.

message 21: by Eric (last edited Feb 03, 2014 11:00PM) (new)

Eric Muss-Barnes (ericmussbarnes) | 21 comments I started a blog/vlog that was just about writing. Then, a fellow writer asked if I had contacted anyone involved in BookTube. And I said, "What the heck is BookTube?"

When she explained BookTube to me, it sounded pretty cool. So, I decided in my next set of videos, I'd start posting some book reviews, in order to have content that was more befitting for the BookTube community.

That was how InkShard evolved.

message 22: by readbykiki (new)

readbykiki (kierancrump) | 65 comments Well, I actually joined because of April Brooks. C'mon she's incredibly funny. So I made a video and it went from there, although I have to say my channel was originally a beauty channel, but I stopped making videos for it because of the abuse 'Boys shouldn't wear makeup'

Anyway you can find my channel at - http://www.youtube.com/user/crumpeter...

message 23: by Alli (new)

Alli The Book Giraffe (allithebookgiraffe) Hey everyone, I am Allison from allysbookishlife. I started my channel in September last year. I discovered booktube about a month before. I thought doing all the tag videos and reviewing books would be fun! I like putting my opinion out there and making friends that also like to read and compare our likes and dislikes of a book.

message 24: by Gothie (new)

Gothie BioVenom (gotherellabiovenom) I've just started, and I'm doing it because I want to break out of this socially inept shy shell I have and share the books I read :)

I also think it will come in handy when I finish my library services diploma and start looking for work in the field.

message 25: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Wagner | SFF180 (sff180) | 30 comments I suppose I started my channel because after reviewing on my website for over 12 years, I was looking for a way to freshen up the experience, try something different, plus have a more distributed presence on the internet. So far, the publishers that I work with seem to enjoy it (especially my weekly Mailbag videos, where I show off all the review copies I've received in the previous week), and the readers are slowly coming around. Mainly though, it is fun, which is why you should do it in the first place, right? :-)

I cover science fiction and fantasy, so if that's your bag, feel free to join me at http://youtube.com/user/SFReviewsnet

message 26: by Evita (new)

Evita (lavitaloca31) | 3 comments I love to talk about books and a lot of my friends don't really read often. It's a way for me to get out everything I want to say about the things I read.

message 27: by Annie (new)

Annie (anniesmusings) | 3 comments Hello everyone. I'm Annie. I started booktubing this summer when I got a new computer. I had wanted to join booktube for a while but didn't want to film videos on my old computer because it didn't have (or at least I couldn't find) video editing software. Over the summer, my computer died and I had to get a new one. The one I got was a Mac which, of course, came with iMovie. I had been watching booktube for quite a while before I finally joined and thought it looked like so much fun. I love reading and I could talk about books for hours so I thought I'd have a lot of fun on booktube. My channel is here if you want to check it out: http://www.youtube.com/user/iliveandb... :)

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I started my channel because I love books and thought it would connect me to others that love talking about books. I was inspired by Charley and Jack (so thanks).

message 29: by Emma (new)

Emma Května (emmakvetna) | 5 comments hey guys! i discovered booktube back in october and watched many different booktubers, but i was mainly inspired by Little Book Owl, her videos are just great and she seems very nice! and she makes it look so fun so i decided to start my own channel in november. I realized how behind i was on all the books that are 'in' at the moment to be reading or to have read, and i really want to catch up on all the fun and join in on collabs, read a longs, live book discussions and overall awesomeness this community has! i'd be tickled pink if you subscribed :) hope you enjoy!

Oswin Holmes (reichenbooks) | 14 comments Hello! I'm Oswin from Reichenbooks.
I started BookTube this summer because my friends either don't read or they don't read same books that I read do to different interests. I wanted a way to talk about books. I had been watching BookTube videos for quite awhile! I have 48 subscribers now. (:

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

I started at the begining of the year, although I haven't really been filim much videos recently, finding the time is just really difficult at the moment. Hoping to change that in the New Year and get back to Booktubing.
I started mainly because I love books and being part of a community seemed to be like a good idea, and I was right. I love watching the videos of others and seeing their views on books that I have loved and hated.

message 34: by Trina (new)

Trina (trinabetweenchapters) I just started a Booktube channel this week. I discovered Booktube last year when a friend sent me a link to one of Christine Riccio's booktalks. I soon became hooked to many book channels! This past summer during BookTubeAThon I kept feeling the urge that I really wished I could join in the fun of the challenges and wished I had a place to post my own videos but I was really intimidated of starting my own channel. I have been writing a personal blog for many years, and lately it's become only book related things, so I figured this was a passion I should probably pursue. I was going to make it a 2015 goal to make an post my first Booktube video, but the inspiration to do it was so strong that I didn't wait for the new year!

I definitely find it awkward to talk to a camera in an empty room, and I'm not as good as editing as I'd like to be, but it's nice to know that I have no where to go but UP! We all have to start somewhere! I'm glad I've found this group. :)
