Maybe he failed at something in some point of his life, and has ever since been striving to prove himself in any way he knows how. After failing whatever it was, he became very stern, but he remains uncertain as to many of his choices. But because he is so stern and level-headed, people tend to listen to him. (He would need a good girl. A girl who would encourage him, and one he could protect.)

I would go with something more like Sariel or Rania instead of Sophia. She just might be the girl that Liam needs. She would wear dreadlocks. (After all, dreads are a warm hairstyle and her ice powers would be pretty cold.) Perhaps her history is that she used to live in the far ice-heaths of the north with her family, or mentor what have you, and gets embroiled in the happenings of things because she devolopes feelings for Liam.
