The fact that there was no big, obvious revelation is one of the things I really liked in the book. I HATE it when novels that deal with life stories/emotions finish with some grand moral/epiphany. It's like "this character has complicated emotional issues, which are multifaceted and influenced by the complexities of real life, and we can probably base an entire book series exploring them if we really wanted to... and then in the end of the novel: BAM! an uplifting revelation! We learned something! And they lived happily ever after"
When does that ever happen in real life? When you change it's usually a subtle, gradual process, not some epiphany that gives you a dramatic new outlook on life.

I'm still somewhat skeptical about Grossman's stance re: fantasy in The Magicians, but I did find his comparison to 'Watchmen' - a book I think we all admire the hell out of - provocative. I may reconsider the work, particularly based on future installments. I do thank you for posing the question to him (and for saying I'm "thoughtful," rather than, say, "snarky," or "a blowhard").
