Welcome to our first UIU book club read! This summer we'll be talking about Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games, first published in 2008. With its record-breaking adaptation to film, it has seen a renewed interest as people discover it for the first time, or go back to read it for a 2nd (or 3rd!) time.
For our first discussion, please introduce yourself, and tell us whether you have read the book, seen the movie, or both, and any initial thoughts on the book and/or movie.

Ashely Holland (untamedbeauty) | 1 comments HI, my name is Ashely. I've read the whole series about two times now. sadly, i havn't watched the movie, though i've heard alot about them. I loved the book. it was a very original story and it wasn't cheesy. Team Peeta and Team Finnick!

I read the first book shortly after it was released because I heard that it was one that Stephanie Meyer (Twilight author) couldn't put down. I loved the book because it was unlike anything else I had read, and very original. I still haven't read the final book -- I think I'm putting it off because I don't want it to end!
I was very pleased with the movie. When I first heard about the actors who were cast, I was disappointed. Namely the males -- especially Peeta, Gale, and Haymitch. But I thoroughly enjoyed Harrelson's Haymitch; his small grimaces were spot-on. I loved Lenny Kravitz's portrayal which makes me root for a "Team Cinna". :)

Of course there are always those little things that are cut out or changed, but all in all I think they did a great job bringing out the most important aspects and feelings of the story.

Nikki | 1 comments My friends have all been raving about this series! I can't wait to read it myself! :)

Let us know what you think, Nikki! By the way, I'll be sending you a copy of the book since you were the 1st to respond to my message. :)

Christine Oakley | 4 comments It was my plan to read this book over the summer anyway. Looking forward to reading this one. A lot of my friends have recommended it!

message 7: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1 comments I watched the movie first before the book unfortunately because the book was excellent but I kept comparing it to the movie. Book two and three are just as brilliant and the bonus is that I came into them without preconcieved ideas which was mich better. Thanks for starting is Jodi

Welcome Mike, and thanks for joining! We look forward to your comments as we progress to talking about the books in more detail.

Christine, hopefully it will be a welcome relief from that class! It really is a page-turner!

Jill (jmjennings_1980) | 2 comments Hi my name is Jill. I just started reading the book this past Monday night and so far I love it and am half way through the book already. I haven't seen the movie yet and don't know if I want to because some of my friends went to it and they were very disappointed with it because they really didn't get into the reaping like they did in the book and they they should of touched more with that in the movie then what they did.

Hi Jill, nice to have you here. I'm actually anxiously awaiting the book because like i said in a previous post, it was probably a few years ago that I read it. So it definitely wasn't fresh in my mind when I saw the movie!

message 13: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1 comments I have read all three books and absolutely loved them! I couldn't put them down.

Good to have you with us Amanda! It normally takes me quite a while to read a book because I lose focus, but these definitely keep you reading!

Lauren | 2 comments I read the trilogy last summer and just loved them!! Anyone who hasn't read them yet totally needs to! Mockingjay was my least favorite of the three but I loved them all so much.

message 16: by Kate (new)

Kate (katelovestoreadeverything) | 1 comments hello! My name is Kate. I haven't read this series yet and I haven't seen the movie either, so I'm pretty excited about this group!!

message 17: by Connie (new)

Connie | 1 comments I have to admit that I am skeptical about reading these books, but will give it a try!

Jill (jmjennings_1980) | 2 comments Connie, I was the same way you where about the book but then I just thought I'd give it a chance and so far it's not bad and I'm finding it hard to put the book down.

Stephanie (steph0730) | 1 comments Hi, my name is Steph. I have read all of the books and have seen the movie. I thought the books were excellent. They were original and thought-provoking, had good charachters, and evoked many different emotions throughout the story line. These are the first books that I've recommended that friends read before seeing the movie. There is much more depth and detail in the books, that I think was lost in the movie, and not apparent to viewers who had not read the books first.

Joslyn (CaptJossyWossy) | 1 comments Hello! My name is Joslyn. I've only read the first book, but I can not wait to finish the series. I've also seen the movie. I loved the way the story was written, I feel like it was set up in a perfect way. I was on an emotional roller coaster through the entire book. (Okay, maybe I'm just a little too emotional. :P) I do agree with Stephanie, there was quite a bit lost in the movie that you wouldn't pick up on unless you've read the book but I was okay with that, because it was like a special little secret. haha

Happy Reading Everyone!

Welcome to all our new members....I'm glad you found our group! Connie, could you tell us why you are skeptical about the books? Is it the violence or something else? Sometimes I am leery about books/movies such as these that people like just because it's the "in thing". But like several people have mentioned, these really do draw you in, are original & thought-provoking.

Joslyn, had you recently read the book? Having read it a couple years ago, I didn't pick up on all the things that were left out of the movie. I'm going to start re-reading it though to refresh my memory!

By the way, we will start discussing the book in greater detail on Monday (hopefully I'll receive my copy from Amazon by then! :)

And congrats to Christine & Nikki who were the 1st to respond to my email giveaway--I'll have your copies for you soon!

message 22: by Christie (new) - added it

Christie | 13 comments Hi, this is Christie P. I have been wanting to read this book for a while, but always seemed to be in the middle of a class and another for fun book. This gives me the perfect reason to go on ahead and read.

An education instructor advised that teachers should read what their students are reading and I'm glad that this book is well written and I want to know what happens next.

Yay Christie! I too firmly believe that teachers should be reading what their students are reading, and keeping up with children's/young adult literature in general.

message 24: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 1 comments Hello, This is Rachel T. I have read the series not once but twice! I have also seen the movie. I really enjoyed the book and look forward to the rest of the series on the big screen.

message 25: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1 comments My name is Kat and I just finished all three books. I hope to go see the movie when I find some spare time and a baby sitter. I loved the books and finished all three in about a week. I actually got very annoyed with Katniss throughout the whole story, which made me realize that the author had brought me that much into the story that I could be upset at a character in a book. I loved Cinna, and can't wait to see how he was portrayed in the movie. Like any other book to movie series, I will put away what I know of the books and try and appreciate the artistic quality that was brought to the movie. I would have never heard about this book series if it had not been for all the hype about the movie. Hope to hear y'alls opinions too! Have a great summer!

message 26: by Christine (new)

Christine Oakley | 4 comments Thanks Jodi! I haven't actually bought the book yet so that will come in handy, thanks!

message 27: by Deb (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deb (dpladsen) | 6 comments Hi - I'm Deb. I just finished reading the first book last week and hope to get my hands on the other 2 in a couple weeks. I hadn't heard of this series until I saw the trailer for the movie. I was really put off by it at first - being a mom, I didn't like the idea of kids killing kids. I thought that was the entire focus of the books/movie and figured it would be overly gorey. However, after reading the first book I was immediately drawn in by the whole "process" of the long standing tradition of it all and what it represented in society. Now I'm excited to keep reading!
