Wolf Hall
question
Is it just me...
It took me a couple of tries to get through the book. Fascinating material, but too many characters to track and it seemed to lose focus as it moved along.

I had a hard time getting through the first 100 pages or so - did not like her writing style. Didn't know who was speaking half the time due to her always just using "he"! "He" who???? It gets much better as it goes on. I am now reading the sequel "Bring Up The Bodies", and maybe she heard her critics because eventhough she still uses "he" quite a bit, she will clarify it right afterwards - "He, Cromwell, said ....." This one is easier to get through too.
I really enjoyed the book, but do understand why so many disliked it. I was frustrated at first with the aurhor's use of tense, but after awhile, I seemed to catch the rhythm and began to really enjoy the insight into the character's mind and the lively account of the political climate of the time. I think that the author did a better job with the narrative in Bring Up the Bodies.

I loved it. A lot. It's always funny that people can have such differing opinions on books. Maybe try it again, at a later time :-)
I didn't like it. I had to read it for a class; otherwise, I would have stopped on page 20. Everyone is named Tom and there is an excessive use of pronouns, so I couldn't figure out which Tom the author was referring to.
I too had a hard time getting though this book. I am a fan of the Tutor era and know quite a bit about the subject, however I found this book fairly dry and confusing. If I didn't have any foreknowledge about the subject I would have been lost before the end of the first chapter.
I loved Wolf Hall. Tore right through it and have started Bring up the Bodies immediately. I am truly surprised at the posts here that call it dry or pretentious.
The use of present tense kind of startled me at first too, but once I got into the swing of it, I thought it improved the story, gave it more intimacy.
