Sophie sat on the beach staring out to the water. She had just came out off the water after a rinse and was drying off in the sun. She attached her large black hemp sunhat and wore sunglasses covering half her face to hide her puffy eyes. Her hair was dark and wavy due to the water. Florence was settling more uphill, collecting firewood for a bonfire. Florence was finally having her meet his always distant best friend. She always thought him weird for he always spent his time in isolated uninhabited desert areas of the world. Apparently he is making an appearance to the normal world. Going to be residing at this school as well.
Caleb parked his car in the parking lot before the beach. He would of taken his normal way of transportation but regarding the fact he was meeting his best friend's little sister, popping up naked in front of her wouldn't be the best idea. He pulled off his shirt and threw it into the backseat. He began to walk across the beach to the giant pile of wood next to Florence
Farther down the beach he saw a large black circle with hair near the water. "Hey man, thanks for coming." Florence said handing him a beer.
"No problem." Caleb said staring down the beach as he open it.
"Yeah, that's her" Florence gestured. "Same problem as you. She doesn't have any friends."
Down the beach, with out turning around Florence's sister flicked them off."
"Hey, I met an interesting guy yesterday. His name was... er, Sam? No... Steven!"
Florence gave him a look. "Oh really? Sounds like so much fun. Couldn't even remember his name."
Caleb rolled his eyes. "And I met this girl one or two times."
"See this sounds interesting." Florence encouraged. "That a'boy!" He patted Caleb on the back. "But more pressing matters are on my list. You can tell me about this girl later. Lemme see if VERA will come socialize!" he shouted out.
Caleb rolled his eyes and smiled.
Florence made his way down to where Eudora sat, within minutes she angrily picked up her sandals and began walking back with him to the bonfire.
Caleb turned around to set up a chair to sit in.
Caleb turned back around to face Florence and his sister. Vera was staring down with her huge glasses and enormous hat. Caleb probably wouldn't have noticed if Florence wouldn't have formally introduced them.
"Vera this is Caleb" he said gesturing to Caleb.
Caleb was about to make some snide comment about Florence's formality or theatrics but as he smiled and began to speak Vera looked up at him.
Vera tensed behind her glasses and Caleb's eyes widened. He let his bottle slip out of his hand.
She quickly reached for it and caught it before it hit the sand. In her haste her hat flew off.
She handed it to him without a word.
"Uh, er, thanks. Nice to uhm, meet you... Vera."
She nodded.
Caleb quickly looked at Florence to see if he detected anything. He looked deep in thought.
He looked up and finally said, "We forgot to get marshmallows." Truly disappointed.
Caleb let out a relieved laugh.
"Uh, yeah... I'll go get them." he volunteered looking for an out.
Vera stared straight at the sand.
"she's a little shy." Florence mouthed at Caleb and pointed at Eudora. "Nah, man. Why don't you too stop being so tense and chill for a minute. I'll go get em" He wrapped his arms around the two. Eudora didn't move and Caleb let out a nervous laugh.
Florence began to jog off. He turned back at the two who hadn't moved an inch. "Throw me the keys!" he shouted out. Caleb reached around Vera to grab the keys on the chair then took a step and threw them out to Florence. He caught them and made his way to the car. It wasn't until they saw his car drive away that they relaxed.
They looked at eachother simultaneously.Caleb opened his mouth, "I--"
Vera took off her glasses. "Don't call me Vera. He calls me that because it means-"
"I don't see a problem with it. Truthful One." Caleb finished
"-because I am younger than him. Apparently to him I posses no 'wisdom'" she air quoted the meaning of her name
Caleb put his hand on his face and turned around. "Ugh. You are my best friend's little sister."
"Don't walk away from me!" Vera said chasing after him. "Didn't just yesterday you offered to help me?"
"That was before."
"Before what!?"
"Before I found out you were my best friend's little sister."
"Does that not make me in need of help?" she said in a judgemental way.
"No... it's yeah. But." He had sat down and now he looked up at her.
Vera crossed her arms at him and glared. "What is the matter? Afraid Florence will get jealous? He has his duty in a bag"
Caleb pressed his lips. "I'll help you if you need it, it's just."
Vera sat next to him. She now seemed so small compared to him.
"What!?" she yelled at him.
"I liked you." he said. Getting it out into the open.
There was a moment of silence.
Caleb looked away straight forward toward the water.
Vera sat on her knees facing him.
She leaned in.
He looked at her from the corner of his eyes, she already had her hands on his shoulder.
He turned his head.
Their lips touched for the briefest moment.
Her hands went to his neck and he rotated his torso so his hands to go to hers.
Sweet and soft.... and short.
Caleb pulled back. "Stop. stop." he said in a soft voice.
She didn't, she leaned even more on him. She held on to his neck.
Caleb had to push her off.
"I said STOP!" he almost shouted. She rocked back and sat on her feet. She stared at him wide eyed.
Caleb's eyes furrowed. He brought up his hand and lightly caressed it across her face.
"We can't I am sorry I told you that. That was my problem."
"No it wasn't. I liked you too."
Caleb bit his lip and pushed up from the ground.
"I can't we can't. You are my best friend's sister. I am suppose to be helping you not..."
"dating me? loving me?"
Caleb furrowed his eyebrows. "This never happened."
he said and walked away.
Sophronia sat with her back to the fire, facing the water. And Caleb sat in a lawnchair, drinking another beer across the fire.
"You guys are so boring." Florence said when he came back. A large bag of marshmallows in his arm. "Who wants SMORES?" he said in an upbeat tone. Neither Caleb or Sophronia looked up at him. The rest of the night Florence and Caleb caught up on the school, and the past 50 years. One talked and none listened.
