HF Challenge #10 (June 1, 2012 - July 31, 2012) - Task List & Q&A

The only actual HF I found for D-Day is:
The Steel Wave: A Novel of World War II by Jeff Shaara
Margaret wrote: "Another question here, for 10.2 would this work
Ella Enchanted?
I love these challenged since I get to read so many that have been sitting on my years waiting for me."
That would be perfect.

I'd accept that. I also recently read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society which wasn't specifically ABOUT D-Day, but it was an important factor in the book, so I'd accept that too, if someone was looking for another alternative.

Cheryl wrote: "Regarding task 15.4 - Read two books with the same title by different authors - do articles count? Would March by Geraldine Brooks and The March by Doctorow work?"
No - it should be the exact same title.
No - it should be the exact same title.

Eye of the Needle..."
RE: Eye of the Needle. Do we have the 50 year rule, still? The book was published in 1978.
Oh, yes... Good catch. I didn't realize that it had been published in 1978. So that would not work, then... sorry.

Wow, I did not realize that either, sorry, it's still worth reading though, one of my favorite books!

Thanks,

Eye of the Needle..."
Thanks for the suggestion of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Becky!
For Maude's task (or for any of the others requiring HF), can we use a book that has elements of magical realism. (like Houses of the Spirits)?
Margaret wrote: "Ok, me again. Same name, different authors. How about these two Elizabeth I and Elizabeth I: Red Rose of the House of Tudor, England, 1544
Thanks,"
No, sorry Margaret. It really would have to be exactly the same title for the task.

I would say no to this one for the other HF tasks, but Maude would need to decide if she'll allow it for her own task.

For 25.1 would this qualify? It does mention Normandy in the description.
The Last Jump: A Novel of World War II

Debbie wrote: "would you consider
HF? it touches on the Ethiopian revolution"
No - I Googled the Ethiopian Revolution and it seems that it started in 1974, which wouldn't meet our 50 year rule.
Please also use book titles, not just book covers - it makes it easier to identify the book when we're not able to hover a mouse over the image. Thanks!

This should be fine.

You'd need two books for 50.1, Leslie. But I'm not sure about that book fitting the task.
50.1 Diane's Task: In honor of July 4th, read two HF books at least 300 pages each. 1) About the quest for personal freedom or fulfillment of a personal goal; and 2) Covering a war or battle that the United States was engaged in.
This is Diane's task, so I'll let her make the decision as to whether that would work for part...

Please join us Victoria! It's not about doing well, it's about challenging yourself. And everyone here is so supportive - it will be so much fun!
Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "Fro task 100, each of the three books need to be from a different country AND continent? So we can't read two books from the same continent?"
Right - they need to be different continents as well. Likewise, there are some countries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_...) that cross continent borders, so those could only be used one time as well.

I have the other book, just wasn't sure about the second book. Thanks!
Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "Also if a book is categorized as historical fiction and alternative history could it still be used for HF?"
If it's alternative history, then no, it wouldn't be eligible as HF.

Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "So 75% of Russia is in Europe so would Russia count for Europe or Asia?"
It would count as both. If Europe and Asia will be used for the challenge, then Russia could only be used for one of them, and another country would need to be chosen for the other continent.

Yes.

Yes.
For task 20.3, where we need to read something from a previous challenge, does it need to be a challenge from this group?

Thanks
@Victoria -- if you need help on finding a book, put a call out on this thread. Some are very specific. Also, once the challenge starts, you can see what people are reading to get ideas.
I know that Becky and I had put out some recommendations about graphic novels.

Cheryl wrote: "Becky, I had a question that may have gotten lost in the shuffle. Does a pen name for two authors count for task 15.2? Specifically, Charles Todd, the pen name for a mother/son writing team.
Thanks"
No - It should have two distinct author names.

No - It should have two distinct author names.

The writing team doesn't have to be historical fiction. There is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by a duo, but you might have already read it.

Right - any genre for the two author task.
