The Way of Kings

I had a hard time getting through this book, but I am looking forward to the sequel. You can read my review to get my feelings shortly after finishing it. I'd also never heard that the series might span 20 books or more. I'd always heard there would be at least 10 books. But the way Sanderson likes to stretch things out, 20 books a thousand pages or longer would not be impossible for him.
I bought the hardback edition because the graphics are so beautiful and the book just feels good in my hands. Sanderson has patterned this after the Wheel of Time, so: (1) there is an ending in mind that will impact the universe, (2) the characters will change slowly and interact with each other in odd ways, (3) a plethora of characters will be introduced who will keep reappearing in subsequent books, and (4) it will all fit together like an intricate puzzle. In other words...my kind of series!
I love Brandon's writings, The man is a genius, obviously him being chosen to finish WOT kinda shows that off. That said, I absolutely LOVED the Way Of Kings, and cannot wait for the next volume in the series. I think the way it is not middle earth for once in a fantasy book rocks. I read this book in 5 days and usually with over 1000 pages that would be a month for me. LOVE his work and think he is the next big fantasy writer!
I really enjoyed this book and I'm also excited for the series. The problem I have is if this series is going to be 20 books or more it's going to take forever for the author to complete it. I mean this first book was published in 2010 and the second is expected in 2013. That's 3 years between books so it's going to take 60 + years to complete the series at that rate.

Can't wait!!!
Can't wait!!!
All I have to say is when i finally conquer the world I'm going to put Sanderson in chains and set him to writing non-stop because i cant get enough. To anyone on the fence you can't go wrong with any of his fantasy works.
If you aren't in the mood for a long wait between books save this one and pick up Elantris, Warbreaker, or Mistborn.

I almost threw this book. At the beginning i hated it, there was no main protagonist it jumped around too much. As the story progressed it got better.
Copied the beginning from my post on Mistborn discussion:
I recently read Way of Kings by Sanderson and I think the world he has created here has some great potential and a few of the characters are really interesting. I'm quite looking forward to the next installment of this but fear that he may have spent so much time creating multiple storylines in book one that it will take ages for him to refine the story down to a publishable book.
It did take some time for this book to get going as there were so many people it was introducing and so much exposition of the universe (I think Sanderson does this better in this book than in the Mist born books which reminded you every paragraph about "burning such and such a metal" so " such and such an effect will happen")but I did end up loving the book.
However, I will be eagerly awaiting the next book as there is a lot of great potential here.
Can I just say I've not been a fan of the WoT finishing books.
I've been reading WoT for over half my life and have enjoyed and at times hated every minute of it. My innate, obsessive nature will mean I was always going to read the finishers no matter who wrote them and I was really excited when I heard Sanderson was doing them.
However, I do feel that the pace of the two books I've read (Gathering Storm and Towers of Midnight) makes it feel like he's getting through the story he knows he has to tell from Jordan's notes so he can be finished with it in 3 volumes rather than writing a story he wants to write and finish in his own time with his own additions.

I am quite excited for this series. I was introduced to Brandon Saunderson because he is finishing The Wheel of Time series. I was curious to see how well his style woud mesh with Robert Jordan. I was happy to see that it should meld well.
I am a little daunted by the fact that he is expecting it to be 20 or more books. As it is I know that I will have to re-read the first book to remember things that I have forgotten. Just as I need to go back a re-read a few fo the Wheel of Time books before the finally comes out.
The thing I love and hate about books like this is their length. I love getting to know the world and everything about it, but because the time between books can be long you tend to forget what has happened before because of everything you have read in the meantime.
All in all though I am looking forward to something new to read since I have read many of my favorites and I need to find more to quench my thirst.
