Adam Stone I am also a big fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories and this year am embarking on a challenge of my own to read all of the 56 short stories and 4 novels of the canon.

I have already read A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four and the first volume of short stories The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and am now about half way through The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.

I have also read some of the Young Sherlock novels and I actually think that they are actually quite good and do give the Young Bond series a run for their money.

Adam Stone I would say do it again, Simon. It's a whole lot of fun revisiting these stories.

Jamie I've been meaning to read Sherlock for ages but haven't yet, unbelieveably...and I'm 28!
A Study In Scarlet is the first, right?

Jason | 29 comments Jamie,
don't feel bad, I was 43 before I read a single Sherlock Holmes. I think you're right about a study in Scarlet but I'm not sure it makes alot of difference. That wasn't the one I started with and I don't feel it detracted from the experience at all.

Jamie what story or novel should I start with would you say?

message 6: by Adam (new)

Adam Stone Thats what I am trying to do at the moment. It is so much better to read them in sequence, if you are able to.

Jamie Okay, so I am almost 2/3 finished with A Study In Scarlet, and I'm definitely hooked on Holmes! But how do you guys feel about the big switch in settings and all the Mormon stuff? It's kind of throwing me off...

I have to admit that it did go off the boil with all that stuff, no matter how relevant it maybe to the plot.

Jamie That sounds reasonable, Simon.
Now that I've actually finished the whole book, I feel that although those bits were a little off putting, they do contribute to the story as a whole and made me sort of understand what the murder's motives were and get inside his emotions and way of rationalizing.
On the whole I'm really exited to get on with The Sign Of Four!
