Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) My books read total for this year is 150. Just wanted to know what everyone else was. It was a great year for reading for me and hopefully 2009 I'll see an even bigger number.

message 2: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) I'll finish the year at 81 but that's since I started keeping track in late June. I will definitely double or triple that number next year.

message 3: by Melissa (new)

Melissa My official total was 192. My goal for 2009 is to read all of the books I own and haven't read yet because I keep getting books from the library or friends!

message 4: by Kristen (new)

Kristen (areadinglady) I'm the apparent slacker at 46. LOL. My goal for the past couple years has been to read 50 books a year. I don't have as much time to read as I wish. I have so many books I haven't read and I'm trying to put a dent in those, but it doesn't help when I keep buying more! :D

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) yeah I know how you feel even if you start to make a dent, you end up building you pile back up due to new releases from fave authors or new authors.

message 6: by Shirley (new)

Shirley (discipleshirley) | 27 comments I am embarrassed to say. I do a lot of researching, does articles count?

message 7: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (tsorrels) My goal was 100 and I ended the year at 110.

My husband asked if my goal this year could be 80. I chuckled and said, no. :) 100 is my goal for 2009 too.

message 8: by pianogal (new)

pianogal | 31 comments This year I finished out at 130 (last year I barely finished 75). Just for the fun of it, I also track # of pages I read, and this year I set my new record at 44,330. That's about 10,000 more than I've ever read. Just goes to show what you can do when the TV writers go on strike. :)

message 9: by Beth F (new)

Beth F I finished with 102. I usually make a goal to read 50, so I definitely surpassed that in '08. I hope to make 100 in '09 as well.

message 10: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Wow pianogal! Great idea with the page total! I read a lot of young adult books so I'm sure my page total would be low even with a high book total.

message 11: by Pamela, Moderatrix (new)

Pamela (foxglovewitch) | 614 comments Mod
good lord! and I thought I'd read a lot at 90! In my defense, I had to read a bunch of boring stuff for grad school this year. :D

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) lol wow counting the pages, that sounds like fun. IA the writer's strike and tivo have really boost my reading total. Last year (07) I think I read maybe 10 books all together.

message 13: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Cripes! I never realized how much I read until I figured my total: 476!! To be fair, I also read and count graphic novels, which are shorter.

message 14: by LilMisGrayBrisk (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments I read 161 books (49 less than last year) with 41068 pages read.

message 15: by Shanon (new)

Shanon (boban) Goodness - I was super proud of my 77 books in '08. You are some voracious readers. I think tracking the number of pages is a wonderful idea - I'll have to try it for this year.

message 16: by Gina (new)

Gina (ginrobi) | 137 comments Wow! I'll have to get my husband to read this thread so he can get off my back for reading so much, LMAO!

I read a total of 155 books this year, a total of 60,182 pages. Lots of those books were over 400 and 500 pages. And I calculated a little. 365 days a year, divided by 155 books, equals approximately one book read every 2 & 1/3 days.

Now, take Melissa for instance. Girl, I don't know how you did it, but using the same calculation, that means you read one book almost every 1.90 days. Kudos to you, girl!

message 17: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I looked at my totals and counted 39 young adult books. I also read a huge series of mystery books that I know were just barely over 200 pages each. I'm sure that accounts for a lot of my high book total. I have a 10 going on 11 year-old daughter who reads at a high school reading level, so I am always reading young adult books to be sure that they are appropriate for her to read. It is very hard to keep her challenged! I do love young adult books though, so it's certaintly no hardship on my part. Plus, I never sleep. My insomnia allows me to read, a lot.

message 18: by Jill (new)

Jill | 24 comments I read 104 books in 2008. My goal for 2009 is 100.

message 19: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments HOly cow! I only read 55 and so I feel like a slacker. But I homeschool my children and you try to combine that with regular life...

I have a double stacked bookcase of my TBR plus the ones that I've just seen that I want to read. My goal is to make a dent. Unfortunately the 55 books I read last year didn't make a dent. In fact, it grew... a lot. LOL

I have a friend here who keeps track of page totals. That's too much work. Where do you keep track of it? I don't know... LOL I have too much to do, but it does sound interesting!

message 20: by Nicole (last edited Jan 05, 2009 03:22AM) (new)

Nicole (nicole_sea) | 7 comments I read 107 books in 2008 and the goal for 2009 is 150. So far, I'm on my third book for 2009. :)

message 21: by Jess (new)

Jess | 173 comments I didn't really keep track but I'm going to estimate that in 2008 I read about 150. Maybe in 2009 I will actually keep track. :)

Here's to more books in 2009!

message 22: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Jess, I have a bookshelf for each year. So when I read a book, I can shelve it for that year. Just an idea for ya. :)

message 23: by Jess (new)

Jess | 173 comments That is a good idea, I will set up my 2009 shelf now :) thanks!

message 24: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments No problem! It's hard to go back and remember when you read things, but you might be able to at least kind of do previous years. That's what I did. You can tell as my memory falters and my numbers dwindled... HAHAHA :)

message 25: by Flitterkit (new)

Flitterkit | 4 comments god I so don't keep track.. what with all the rereading.. probably over 200 more likely something like 300. If I can read a 500+page LKH book in a day (bad, bad me.. they would have lasted longer if I had more self control.)
Anyone know how to search goodreads? I usually make the date read when I review them.

message 26: by Gail (new)

Gail | 110 comments I can read the LKH books in one day--and sometimes I start it over again the same day...

I'm WAY behind in my count. Because I'm a little behind on my deadline. I'm pretty sure I read more than 200 books last year--I usually do, but I haven't posted them all yet, and when my computer broke, I lost a lot of my list. I need to transfer the books from here back into my personal computer file.

Ozma, I think you're doing good, given the home-schooling. I admire anyone who can do that. Flitter, isn't there a search on the "My Books" page?

message 27: by Gail (new)

Gail | 110 comments Flitterkit, you can put the books in order of Date Added (except the ones I put in today are inexplicably dated Jan. 06!???!), which might give you a slightly easier way to count.

message 28: by Flitterkit (new)

Flitterkit | 4 comments Gail wrote: "Flitterkit, you can put the books in order of Date Added (except the ones I put in today are inexplicably dated Jan. 06!???!), which might give you a slightly easier way to count. "

Thanks... well 1st of all, today IS January 6th.. :)

and the count on goodreads (which doesn't include rereads or about 1/4 of the paperbacks is 70 since Late May or so. So a guess of about 200 is probably right.

message 29: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments I read 58 books in 2008. Not bad considering that I work full time, am in a choir, and go to the gym 2-3 nights a week.

message 30: by Jodz (new)

Jodz (jodz87) | 5 comments 72 for me!

Martina the Book Fairy (book_fairy) | 442 comments I read 167 books, but since a lot of them were YA, my page count is lower than usual at 57,691. In 2007 I read 160 books but 61,618 pages, so the count is pretty average for me.

message 32: by DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (last edited Jan 16, 2009 03:26AM) (new)

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 737 comments I didn't have this handy site to track my book reading last year, but looking at my bookshelf, I can say that I read at least 62 from August through December. It will be much easier for me to track this year. =)

message 33: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments How do you people track your pages? That seems like so much more work since you gotta write it down somewhere. I'd totally lose it. Or forget to mark a book or something.

Just curious. I think it is fascinating to look at how many pages you read...

message 34: by Pamela, Moderatrix (last edited Jan 17, 2009 09:09AM) (new)

Pamela (foxglovewitch) | 614 comments Mod
I keep track of my books both in my livejournal and on my blog ( http://www.thediscriminatingfangirl.c... ). I haven't keep track of pages read, but I think I might start this year. I'll probably add the number of pages next to each book's entry and keep a running total at the bottom of the post.

message 35: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments I don't post my books on LJ as I go. I mean I've already read 10 books this month. The first four were in like two or three days. I am planning an end of month review next week, but I've already given some of my books back to the people they were borrowed from.

And I read some books online, so I don't get pages. I'm a big believer in saving a buck as I homeschool two boys and we read a LOT of classics. I just cannot afford all the books it would take to have our rich reading list. So it's ebooks on the web! (One day I'm hoping for an ebook reader... OMG how much easier that would be!!! Curl up in bed to do some of our reading? Or outside on nice days. Or in the car on long trips. Sure, I have a laptop but I don't always have a net connection and you just really can't curl up with your kids to read Swiss Family Robinson together with a laptop. Not like the Sony "Sweetness" (My name for their LAMELY NAMED ereader) or a Kindle.

I think the page number thing is interesting, to say the least.

I have a friend and in 2007 she read 112 books with a total of 34,889 pages. (She was featured in our town paper.) She decided page totals was too much work so she didn't track last year.

I just wonder "Gee how many pages did I read?"

Of course then you get the whole well font size and margin size... we've all zipped through that one romance that for whatever reason has one inch margins and is in 20 pt typeface. LOL

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) Lady Ozma - good point about the font size and margin. Not to mention actual page size, spacing, hard cover vs. paperback, etc. That's why I don't think page count is all that much more accurate of a measuring tool than just counting the books you read. Different editions of the same book can vary as much as 300 pages sometimes.

message 37: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments I've seen that for sure. Why is it that one copy of a book has so many different pages??? Oh yeah... I'll never understand how they determine what size they print a book (IE trade vs standard) and how they come up with margins. It seems hit and miss. LOL

message 38: by Jess (new)

Jess | 173 comments Lady Ozma - the kindle is excellent, but it is a little pricey. I received it as a present, so it didn't hurt my wallet all that much. But once you have it, it definitely saves you money. The books are for the most part under 10.00 and you get can the classics for fifty cents in some cases!!

But it also doesn't give you page numbers.

message 39: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Pay for classics? Heck no. That's what project gutenberg is for! :)

I do want one. It'll be so much better for our homeschool. But all in good time. I have other purchases to make first.

message 40: by Jennifer (last edited Jan 23, 2009 09:31AM) (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments Lady Ozma, have you tried www.dailylit.com? They have a lot of the classics for free, since many of them are public domain books now. They'll email them to you, usually a chapter at a time, but there's also a "get next chapter now" feature. I've used the site in the past and liked it.

message 41: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Oh nice! That's one I haven't heard of! We use www.mainlesson.org and online-literature.com and manybooks.net (hope I got those links all right) and Project Gutenberg. Our homeschool uses a LOT of classics that are in the public domain. Good thing because I can't afford all the books we read. I wish I could, but I can't.

I have a scripture site that emails me my reading each day and it has a way for me to say "complete" or "go ahead and send next chapter now" which is nice. If I have time, I can read ahead otherwise it'll automatically send me the next chapter tomorrow. To have a book site, too? Score. Especially since I'm behind the kids on Swiss Family Robinson. HAHA Bet they have that. I'm gonna go check!

um, how many books did I read last year. . . Well, somewhere between 340 and 450. Depending. When I'm at my Mum's I have to subsist on what she has--which means a book in about 3 or 4 hours. And since she lives in the middle of no where, MS, all there is to do is READ. I usually take a suitcase with me that's nothing but MY books (around 10 or 12) then, when I've run out of MINE I start rummaging through hers. She's more into those Harlequin romances than I am. I don't mind some of the historical romances, at least, the ones where the writer has done their homework and the costuming, horses, food etc are correct (see Georgette Heyer for example) but the ones where they have someone running around in Antebellum hoops and its actually Regency. . . Fortunately I have an Aunt who lives about 1.3 miles from Mum who is into mysteries, so I will go over there too and rummage. (Don't even bother suggesting the library. The "local" library has fewer books on their shelf than I own in my personal library.)

Of course my total also includes some re-reads. For instance, I usually go back and re-read Robert Heinlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" once a year. And if its a "bad" day (I have health issues) and I need cheering up--I'll go back and dig out one of my old fav's and re-read it--sometimes for the 10th or 12th or 15th time.

I also tend to "devour" a book when I first get it. Then, after I finish it, I'll go back and re-read parts of it that I especially liked--or if its a mystery, I'll go back and re-read it with a view to watching clues to the identity of "whodunit".

message 43: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments And then she gives me her books. Which is why I have an entire bookcase for "TBR's" HAHA I started off last year with 120 books. I read nearly 60 books and I ended up with over 200 books this year on my TBR. Um... uh... HAHAHA

But I'm digging again through all these books! :)

Good thing Anna dn I have the same taste a lot of times! Thanks Mum!

message 44: by Kate (new)

Kate (katespofford) Wow! I thought I was pretty good at 107, but some of you guys are crazy! I'm hoping to get a lot more this year now that I'm done with school, and I've already got 10. My main goal this year is to get my to-read shelf down to under 20 books at a time. 40 makes me feel overwhelmed.

message 45: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Good luck, Katie!

I know that I'm working on book 19 for this year with a variety of titles. My goal is to get half my TBR bookcase cleared. I'm on my way. The four shelves are double stacked, but one is now only single stacked! YAY!

I'm well on my way to beating last year's number, so I'm pretty happy. I know that I have to stop reading quite as much soon to do some other tasks, but I'm basking in the accomplishment of burning through the stacks! :)

I used to have that under 20 goal. Then somehow my TBR exploded. I'm not really sure how. Watch out, I think they breed like tribbles.

message 46: by Kate (new)

Kate (katespofford) Yeah... I've been refraining from adding books to my "to-read" shelf, although there's a big stack on the shelf by my bed... I may make a new shelf that is "to-read-unreleased" so it doesn't look like as many as there really are :)

message 47: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Good luck with that one. I've failed miserably. As is probably evident by the fact I had this one little stack by my headboard that became a shelf in my closet that has become a bookcase that's double stacked. ROFL.

I'm telling you... like gremlins and water. They breed. Beware! Beware!

message 48: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 2659 comments Mod
gee, I don't know what your problem is Oz--I don't give you THAT many books (hastily hiding the brown paper grocery bag of books that were SUPPOSED to go to Oz today) Only 1 or 2 (dozen, that is) at a time.
:o)

One of us will find a new author, tell the other, and then our OCD takes over (the acorn didn't fall far from the tree, did it Oz?) and the next thing you know--everything that author has ever written is has mysteriouslly appeared at one house or the other and there goes the ol' TBR bookcase over-flowing again

And what do you mean like tribbles? When it comes to reproducing, tribbles are "also rans" when compared to books.

message 49: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments I still remember the day I got a box and a bag of books from you. Good grief! That was the day my TBR list doubled. And then I don't know what happened.

Hey did you get the email I sent you with another book? HAHAHA Uh oh... I see another 12 books in our future! I need to get back to reading! I've read nearly 10% of my TBR this month with my total up to 20! *GRINS*

message 50: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 286 comments I have no idea how many books I read last year, a lot though! I think that this year I will add a book shelf for books read in 2009, seems like a fun thing to keep track of! So far for the year, I am at 19, but I also count audio books. And considering that I have a job were I get to listen to audio books 40 hours a week, that helps my total!

Do you guys just count new books that you have read? What about if you reread a book? I am constantly rereading books, but I haven't counted them so far this year.
