Jennifer | 33 comments I have read Far North and Burial Rites, both of which I enjoyed. Now reading Way Station, which I am adoring.

Derek (derek_broughton) | 796 comments I read Way Station as part of my campaign to finish reading the Hugo winners, and was probably let down by inflated expectations. Still, I suppose if Redshirts is worth a Hugo, Way Station must be!

I think Way Station was a much better book than Redshirts. Simak is/was a very thoughtful writer.

I've got some sort of reading ADD going on as I've started way too many books at one time, but recently finished The Vegetarian (quite odd and unsettling) and Girl Meets Boy (a modern retelling of the myth of Iphis; second Ali Smith book I've read--she's wonderful). I'm midway through The Fifth Season--didn't totally grab me until about a quarter of the way in, but now I'm hooked.

Jennifer | 33 comments I am now reading Mockingbird. Not the one with Catnip. (A friend asked that)

Yeah, it's a slow build. It never did grab me the way The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms did, but still very enjoyable.

Richard All the Light We Cannot See

i was very disappointed by About Grace so i'm late to the party with this one. thus far fuck it's impressive, like peter carey but with heart instead of sadism

message 2308: by Carla (new)

Carla Roberts | 1 comments I just finished re-reading two favorites of mine:
Haunted Tree (The Magus Family Chronicles, #1) by Scott Robert Scheller and Shifting Shadows Stories from the World of Mercy Thompson (Mercy Thompson #0.1, #0.6, #0.8, #1.5, #4.5, #5.5, #7.4) by Patricia Briggs

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 26 comments I've just started reading Dick Francis's Gamble by Felix Francis. The protagonist's American friend is shot dead in the middle of a crowd at a racetrack and he has no clue who shot him or why. So far I've been enjoying it.

Tracy Reilly (tracyreilly) | 143 comments Finished Elena Ferrante's MY BRILLIANT FRIEND My Brilliant Friend (The Neapolitan Novels, #1) by Elena Ferrante . Really a great read-will continue with the others in the series.

I thought All the Light We Cannot See was a very good read, Richard. Were you impressed throughout (or up to the point you are now if you haven't yet finished)? That's the only Doerr I've read.

You re-readers always impress me. There are maybe 5 books I've re-read. It's not that there aren't books I want to reread, it's that there are so many I haven't read yet, I feel obligated to forge "ahead" (as if there were some mysterious masterplan to my reading or some sort of end goal). The Handmaid's Tale was my first Atwood read--it was part of a class studying utopias/dystopias.

Not personally familiar with the reads mentioned by Carla, Olivia, and AnnLoretta, but they looks like an interesting assortment.

Just started The Sellout--talk about a gauntlet-throwing prologue!!!

[Insert happy dance here... oh, wait we're on the internet... just give me a sec... ]

The next one was my favorite of the series, but I was pretty taken with the whole damn thing.

There are a few books that I re-read. I was 16-17 when I first read The Handmaid's Tale. I can't believe I remember so much. And it is even more horrifying.

Rereading The Handmaid's Tale definitely sounds worthwhile--I was quite taken with it at the time.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through Infinite Jest. I read in an interview that all the footnotes were supposed to interrupt the text in the same way everyday life inundates you with interruptions. Since this was written 20 years ago, I figured there should be even more interruptions now so I've interrupted this book with several others, many episodes of Game of Thrones, a few graphic novels, and many news articles...

I'm doing the same with Finnegan's Wake . I've been on p. 126 for maybe three weeks now.

Have you noticed that there's a point at which "three weeks now" becomes just "that ain't ever getting read..."? I have a book still on my currently-reading shelf that's been there more than a year. I think it's time to admit I'm not really reading it!

Naw, I'm going to do it--just too much going on right now. Time of year.
