That's a GOOD walk on the beach!
I have to officially declare myself a sad b*stard! I ended up crying like a baby at the end of The Book Thief this morning. Loved that book!Listened to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Quintessential Phase to cheer myself up this afternoon and am now moving on to The Two Towers which I remember as being vastly better than The Fellowship of the Ring for no other reason than it doesn't have Tom Bombadil, so I know I should enjoy it better.
I won a First Reads giveaway this week too (Redhead) so will have to get onto that sometime soon too. Struggling to see why I entered the damned competition, as it doesn't actually appeal - possibly an impulse just because I have my hair dyed red at the moment?
Finished His Majesty's Dragon (less "Jane Austen + D&D", more "Bernard Cornwell + Anne McCaffrey").Debating between reading more of the books on my "Currently Reading" shelf or continuing with more of Novik's "Temeraire" series.
Just got The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy! It is a special edition and the actual story begins on page 69.
I decided to stop mindlessly devouring YA for the moment (halfway through the fifth book of a very popular series) and pick up The Prisoner of Heaven (my book club read for this month). I don't know that it has the potential to live up to The Angel's Game (which I loved even more than The Shadow of the Wind), but we'll see. I'm also really looking forward to picking up Look at Me after being the only person I know who loved A Visit from the Goon Squad to pieces.

Oooh. I like the sound of that combination.
Finished Heading Out to Wonderful and I really liked it. It was not as suspenseful as A Reliable Wife, but I just love the way Robert Goolrick writes. He makes tragedy a heart-wrenching but beautiful thing simultaneously. I am now reading Conversations With the Fat Girl, which I am almost finished with. It's alright, a little predictable. I also started the audiobook My Friend Leonard. Not far enough into it to give an opinion yet.
And... I have now added The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness to the mix. Yeah, I'm one of THOSE readers. =)
I'm reading Afghanistan, Where God Only Comes to Weep for my book from every country challenge, and it is only because of that challenge I am forcing myself to finish it. The whole 300-odd page book is written in the present tense, gives no indication of which parts of a paragraph are speech, gives very few people mentioned names, and uses pathetically simplistic language. On top of the very short, childish sentences, there is an occasional extremely long, poorly punctuated sentence that ought to be split into three or four separate ones. Argh! I'll only finish it for the sake of the damned challenge.
Almost done withCity of Bones, I borrowed it from a friend...about 150 pages in the story grabbed me....300 pages to go. I just hope its not the start of a series...

It's pretty darn effective! I'm looking forward to reading the next entry in the series.
Also, finished Dawn Land and started re-reading The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat & Other Clinical Tales.
Finished The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat & Other Clinical Tales. Started Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers and resumed reading The Roman Empire: A Very Short Introduction.
I've finished Fingersmith, and I'm really glad I joined in the challenge that brought this book to me. My review here http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/... if someone cares xD Am currently reading Ender's Shadow, I loved Ender's Game and a friend suggested that I read this one next since its a paralel, same timeline in a diferent character point of view.
Also started Brave New World.
Riona, thanks for bringing that book up! I've been meaning to read it and keep forgetting to find a copy.

And I've been meaning to read Fingersmith! We're apparently on the same wavelength this week.
Riona wrote: "I just started The Blind Assassin. I love Margaret Atwood."She's cool as all hell, no doubt. I've been meaning to check out I'm Starved for You ever since it was released. It's only available as an e-book (I don't have a reader), so I'm just going to do the cloud thing. Since you've reminded me of her, I'm going to bump it up on my TBR list.
Still reading Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, but added Please Save My Earth, Volume 1 too!
I'm about 200 pages into When Giants Walked the Earth: A Biography of Led Zeppelin I never thought I'd be interested in this kind of thing, but it is very well written and researched. The narrative shifts are an effective touch as well. I'm also about half way through The Catcher in the Rye. Once completed, it will be about the 8th or 9th time I've read it. Forgive the cliche, but there's something new in it for me everytime I read it.
Riona wrote: "And I've been meaning to read Fingersmith! We're apparently on the same wavelength this week. "Seems so :D

This is just a guess but I think the more one sees how Holden rperesents your average young male, the more one is able to appreciate how insightful and profound this novel is.

I read it for the first time about a year ago, or so. One of the scenes when he is in a taxi made me laugh out loud. I enjoyed the book quite a bit.
I'm reading "Secrets of the Federal Reserve" by Eustace Mullins and "Enfold Me" by Steven Greenberg.
Just started The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory
Finished Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers and Please Save My Earth, Volume 1.Started Hellboy: The Crooked Man and Others and started re-reading Chariots of the Gods (haven't read it since I was 11!).
Just finished :http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/... Cavalier and Clay. 5 stars. Starting .http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/84... Girl Gone.

Your links are broken, but I loved The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay.
Finished Chariots of the Gods and Hellboy: The Crooked Man and Others. Gave up on The Roman Empire: A Very Short Introduction in disgust.Started The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion and War in Heaven.
Finished The Man In The Picturein one setting, really enjoyed it. Currently wading through Defending Jacob, Player One: What Is to Become of Us and Ready Player One. Liking the Defending Jacob way more than I expected, and it's the first crime book I've read in a good wee while. Player One is paint-by-numbers-Coupland thus far, although it's better than his last couple of novels.
I can't work out if I'm enjoying Ready Player One, though. I think Cline might have just gone a bit too far with constantly going into explanations of eighties pop culture references - it's really weighing the book down.
Laszlo wrote: "Just got Looking for Alaska."Loved that book. Fantastic character-driven novel. I have yet to find one of John Green's that I dislike.

I'm on the fence about whether or not I want to read
Ready Player One. Have been for a bit. Interested to see what you think when you're done.
Finished up The Prisoner of Heaven. It was different from the other two novels in The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series (like The Angel's Game was different from The Shadow of the Wind), but still written so freaking beautifully that I gave it 5 stars even though I didn't devour it in two seconds.Picked up Undone (I was craving a good mystery and I love the Will Trent novels) and am currently reading Running with Scissors.

I'm definitely going to do a quick review of it. I'm a bit behind on my reviews in general, but it should be up in a couple of days or so. I've only got another seventy pages to go until I've finished it, and at this point I think it's safe to say that in short it's not a modern day classic by any stretch of the imagination but it's not horrible either.
It's just okay. More of a 'filler' book than anything else. *shrug*
Katrina wrote: "Ashley wrote: "Katrina wrote: "Finished The Man In The Picturein one setting, really enjoyed it. Currently wading through Defending Jacob, Player One: What Is to Become of Us and Ready Player One...."Well, at least it wasn't horrible, right? Looking forward to your review.
Finished Ender's Shadow and Brave New World. Both great books, in very diferent ways: Ender's Shadow main character pov is somewhat cold and very analitical, while everyone in Brave New World is, in one way or another, insane :D Started Speaker for the Dead on audio and Un Lun Dun on paperback - I have great expectations on both :'D
Petra wrote: "I'm reading Infinite Jest. I think I'll be saying that for quite some time. :D"Can I just say... lol :D I wonder why you say that, such a tiny book xD
I just finished The Blind Assassin, which I loved. Review here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...I'm also about 1/3 of the way through Expletive Deleted: A Good Look at Bad Language, which is fun but a little more academic than I expected.
I think I'm going to start Never Let Me Go tomorrow.
Still reading The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion and War in Heaven, but started re-reading Treasure Island!

LOL! It's a deceptive book, too. In "normal" print, the thing would be twice the size, I'm sure. Each of these pages contains way, way more words than a normal page. It makes for slow progress.....thankfully, the writing and what's told is interesting (for the most part).
Riona wrote: "I just finished The Blind Assassin, which I loved. Review here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/......"Riona, that's a great review! I completely enjoyed this book, too. You summed it up really well.
Am currently reading The Angel's Game Am hoping to love, it, cos I was enchanted by The Shadow of the Wind :)
Just finished a quickie: R.U.R., a.k.a. Rossum's Universal Robots. It's a play, but a (pre-)apocalyptic one that coined the term "robot". Definitely good. Review here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
