Suspense. Violence. Death. Tales of the paranormal, tales of the supernatural. I enjoy reading these kinds of stories. When I had to choose a novel to read for this assignment, I knew I was going to choose a book involving one of those themes. However, a Canadian author? I rarely base the choice of the novels I want to read on the nationality of the author. In fact, in retrospect, I don’t remember reading many novels written by Canadian authors. Thus the journey of searching for a novel that suits my taste for the supernatural and paranormal (and written by a Canadian author nonetheless) begins.
My search took me to the website for the Sunburst Award for Canadian Literature of the Fantastic, a website where award winning novels about the supernatural (and by Canadian authors) are presented to the interested readers of Canada. I explored the website, and found a particular book that seemed interesting to me, the one that I am currently reading now: A Taint in the Blood. A Novel of the Shadowspawn. At first, I was reluctant to choose this book (about vampires), fearing it to be another adolescent load of crap to similar to the Twilight Series (no offense to fans of the series.). However, after reading a synopsis of the novel, and a myriad of reviews from readers (some positive, some negative), I decided that this novel was worth a try. As noted before, it was not the author that caught my attention, but the themes incorporated in the book that piqued my interest. Thus, I am eager to start reading this novel.
