Does drug usage in fiction match real life?

I've never taken drugs so, although I did research on the extent of drug taking in the high-end restaurant business, most of what I learned was hearsay. There are professions where drug-taking is almost mandatory - traditionally music, writing (think the Romantics) and medicine and, as I found out, the restaurant business.

Can readers verify, through their own experiences, whether this is true in these professions, or whether drug-taking, especially amongst young people, is generally prevalent these days, whichever trade or profession you're in? Does reference to drugs in fiction match real life?

I think that drugs in fiction do match real life cus it is around us all the time and you sometimes dont know who is taking it because sometimes it is not so easy to see. I dont no amongst professionals i do know people that work at night and sometimes feel the need to take something to keep them awake. i dont know from personal experience but it is part of life and people take it everyday unfortunately so it makes it a bit more real when drugs is in a book because it makes the story a bit more serious. Even though in books they seem to get off drugs very fast and easy and in real life that is not true..:) Great question Elizabeth i know my answer is not that good but hey its an answer LOL

Elizabeth Jasper Thanks for your comment, Adriana - very interesting. I'm sure drug-taking among professional people is more widesread than is generally acknowledged. ...more
