Stevie (the3boysnme) | 22 comments 1. The brogue. 2. Big, strong and oh so capable, in everything, and they always are what a real man is supposed to be like (to me anyway). 3.There is something undeniably romantic about the time period and Scotland herself. 4. Jamie Fraser.

Elizabeth Scott | 15 comments I have been to Scotland twice and definitely the beauty of the country attracts me the most!!! The highlands are absolutely beautiful!! And who can resist a man in a kilt;) My husband is Scottish and I LOVE it when the occasion comes up and he wears a kilt!!!!!!!

Mslvoe | 76 comments Elizabeth,
You're so lucky! I wish I can visit Scotland one fine day.

Erica (slayer1star) | 27 comments The respect they have for women and the fierce protectiveness and the Brogue, but mostly the covers hehe, and the mention of a kilt is always a plus.

Suzan Tisdale (suzantisdale) | 32 comments All of the above! Its the Scottish brogue, the kilt, the honor and chivalry mixed with orneriness! The muscles, chiseled lips, passion, excitement....that why I both read and write in that genre! ;o)

Suzan Tisdale (suzantisdale) | 32 comments Elizabeth! I'm so jealous! My husband refuses. I keep telling him its ONLY a skirt if he wears underwear! lol

Jamie (jcomarsh) | 19 comments In no particular order. 1) the Brogue 2) the Large intense, fierce, loyal, sensual men (obviously not all men in Scotland are like that, just the ones I like to read about) 3) How passionate they are about their mate or love interest 4) their quick tempers when their mate is in trouble 5) the KILT and the knowledge that the men didn't where boxers back then 6) the beautiful Scottish scenery 7) the historical aspects of Monica McCarty books. By far one of my favorite Scottish romance authors.

Harriet Schultz | 42 comments Reading through all of the above descriptions of Highland men (in novels at least)made me sigh and then smile. Those men are indeed the epitome of masculinity, but with enough sensitivity to cherish their women and children. I don't think anyone has mentioned honor. The men in these stories live by a rigid code of right and wrong and when they give their word, they mean it. Scotland's physical beauty plays a big part and as others have said, knowing that there's nothing between a man and his kilt is swoon-worthy! I hope that my novel's contemporary hero has some of those same characteristics! Yum, yum and yum!

I believe I mentioned the honor...lol...Besides just being perfectly sexy, I love the intense code of honor...all my heroes have a tremendous sense of right and wrong. ;o) I think that is one of the things that makes a great hero. ;o)

Anne (spartandax) I don't know how actually sexy all Highlanders are actually, or were, but yes, I agree, there was a tremendous love of country, family and honour among them, but not to forget, they were also the creeps. which is why time travel is not really my thing-I would end up with the creep-LOL

Grace | 1 comments It's all about the kilts, baby! And their fierce, possessive and honorable natures.

message 16: by Jocelin (new)

Jocelin | 288 comments I think it is the idea of a man being so courageous that he is willing to go to war for his beliefs. He has the conviction to stand up and fight the good fight. I also think that it is the idea that he was born and bred to be a warrior is very exciting. They fight hard and they love just as hard. It helps that the men are described as having bodies that have been "carved" and look like beautiful statues, it kind of cements the idea of them being absolute dream boats. Highlanders are the last of what we can claim to being the next best thing to "super heroes". The idea of Highlanders creates great stories and it ignites the imagination.

Sorry about not crediting you with the "honor" thing, but once I started to think about men in kilts my mind went a little blank (smiling)!

message 18: by Beth (new)

Beth Mast Oh Boy, what a question!!! Here is my list!
a. Loyalty
b. Honor
c. Possessiveness~for his land, family, and the women he loves
d. Cover art *sigh*
e. Physics~they are described as large, strong men, with capable hands. Knowing they have to swing around their heavy armory. Long tick hair.
f. Kilts~I would love to watch one mount a horse. Wonder what I would see. ;-)
g. Sensual
h. Love deeply~land, family, women, clan, and friends.
i. Courageous~they will fight for what they believe in. they do not let fear overtake them. They can go around in just a kilt in the winter! How brave is that?!
j. Tempers~yes, I even like their quick tempers.
k. Honesty~they will begrudgingly admit when they are proven wrong. However, they never seem to be wrong?????
l. Brogue~for some reason I love the way they talk. Something does it for me when I hear Arse.
m. Nicknames~I hate my nickname however, hearing their endearments for what they love
n. Land~I haven't been to Scotland or Ireland, but would love to some day. Something about the simplicity, hills, castles. For some reason I find it very romantic.
o. I could keep going, but I'm running out of descriptive words at the moment.
Needless to say I love the Highland era!
Beth
