Do chapters moving forward then backward add or detract from the story?

One you hit the 'hinge' chapter everything makes perfect sense. From this point onwards I began to think, "This book is brilliant". But, up until this point I was wondering, "What is all the fuss is about...
I agree-this is definitely a book that needs to be read (certainly past the midway point) before you can even have a reaction-I was so confused for so long and then it all started coming together. In the end I loved this book.

Ellie,
Have you finished reading Cloud Atlas?

Ellie,
Have you finished reading Cloud Atlas?
Yes-I'm this year I finally read the entire thing (I've tried before) and it didn't start to come together for me until half-way through and really cohered at the end.
It often works likes this. There are books I started and abandoned years ago that I've picked up in later life and loved!I can't say that I'd ever tried this book before, but I did have a very deep resistance to reading it. However, in the spirit of being a member of the group, I buckled down and got on with it! I'm glad I did.
It certainly helped me to carry on once I'd seen that the various characters' stories were going to be revisited...when I finished ch 1 I actually checked the page numbers because I thought I'd got a faulty copy! Really glad I stuck with it though because it all tied up so beautifully!
I'm just beginning Timothy Cavendish's story. I'm enjoying how the characters are starting to interweave. The story is becoming more engaging and I'm anticipating new revelations. While I was hesitant to continue reading as I made my way through the second chapter, I'm invigorated to continue with the story now.
Thank God for my dictionary.com app...it's been getting a lot of use with this book!
