.....I don't know....everyone else in my family hate's reading.....even my cousins...
Um....maybe cos it's like something you can....'escape' in??? IYGWM... (if you get what i mean)
I started reading like anybody else i guess, and then i probably found a book series i really liked and caught up in reading them...i'm making that up...IDK.....
I think I like reading because it exercises my imagination. And maybe that's also the reason why I don't read realistic novels very much. I like reading about things that don't really exist, of stories that can't possibly happen. I mean, I have my own life, so why would I be interested in reading stories about other people's mundane lives [which is the case in contemporary novels]?And, like Rose said, reading is sort of an escape.

I love reading because of the endless potential, there are hundreds of lands to explore, the past and future to navigate, and of course an infinite number of lives to step into. I love the possibility of experiencing every kind of situation imaginable, relating to characters you initially had nothing in common with, rollercoasting through the different emotions.The first book I ever read was Ella Enchanted, which made me a bit of a sucker for cheesy romances, and I adore fantasy and the occasional medieval fiction
^^You explained it soo perfectly!I love when I get so lost in a book that i forget my surroundings and everything is forgotten expect the world I just stepped into, then when I finally come back to reality it takes me a minute to remember where I am and the time. It is such a great feeling (:

I agree your description is perfect! That's why movies will never be the same as reading a book
Some movies do a really good job of the book but the thing I always hate is that when you read the book you already have a mental picture of what the characters look like and their manner of speaking and then sometimes the actors cast just don't fit with what you had in mind at all
I started reading around age 4-5. I like reading for the following reasons: You can go somewhere else without ever leaving home, you can relate to characters, you can hate, love, laugh, and cry along with the turning points in a story.
My mom has always been a reader. That's probably why I read so much, because she did.The first chapter book I read by myself was Dinosaurs at Dawn (or something like that), the first of the Magic Tree House books. I was probably five.
It's not a form of escape for me. I don't read because I don't want to be in the world I live in.
I guess I read the books I do because it offers me something different. I can experience the things that I want to experience that I can't in real life because they're not possible (sci-fi/fantasy reader). Plus, a lot of the books I read have a hero and a villain. I like to try and figure out how the hero will defeat the villain. It gives me something to think about, predict, solve, etc etc.
It makes me different from the rest of the kids at my school.

I feel the same way. So many people at my school rather watch tv shows and go on social networks yet all I need is a good book and I'm good :D People think it's strange that I actually enjoy reading.
My friends constantly tease me about it. I've had some friends (yes, actual friends) steal my book from me or cover it and tell me to stop reading. They're mostly joking, of course, but it makes me an outsider at my school that I spend most of my time reading instead of watching popular television shows, hanging out with friends or browsing the internet. But I like being a reader. And I'm thanking whatever force of creation made Goodreads because now I can actually talk about the books I like.
^^its the same with me! When we were in high school all my friends used to say that if they ever needed to find me the first place they would look was always the library because i was always there.
I grew up thinking that books were dorkish and lame, which is unusual since my Dad used to be an avid reader himself. Anyway, we didn't really have libraries to borrow books from and buying them was really expensive so the books I had access to were mostly textbooks. My dad tried to get me to read and the only books he had from his childhood were the Encyclopedia Brown series. I read those and I really loved them. But apart from that I was against reading. It wasn't until we moved to where we live now, where libraries are everywhere that I discovered the joys of reading. I liked the HP movies and I remember hearing about the 7th book being released featured in the news. I couldn't understand why millions of people would voluntarily wait outside a bookstore in the freezing cold and wait until midnight to get this book. So I gave it a chance and read the whole series in basically less than a month. After that, I branched off to other genres and read anything and everything.
When I was younger I used to hide my love for books from people because everyone else thought it was lame and stupid. Especially in middle school, I used to tell my friends that i had other things to do and I would go in the library, grab a book, find a comfy place and spend my lunch time reading. We also had a reading class where we had to spend the entire class period reading so i freaking loved it :D
My older sisters taught me to read. It's the nicest thing they've ever done to me.My first book was The Night Before Christmas.
After that, I was hooked. I wasn't Matilda, for sure, but I still read quite a lot.
Why do I like reading? I think this quote by Lemony Snickett pretty much sums it up.
“Reading is one form of escape. Running for your life is another.”
^^Haha love it!My youngest sister is 6 and I always read to her or sometimes she'll read to me, but today when I was making her lunch she just randomly said "You know I really love to read" and she told me she read the entire book i bought her all by herself. Hearing her say that made me happy (:
I don't know, but I always had the feeling to read books, specially when I eneter a bookstore, I want to read everything, and yes am a bit imaginitive :p, So once I start reading, I fed up prettey fast, guess am not used to reading alot. So after I finished Uni, and spend almost 7 month Unemployed! I said you know what I'll give it a shot one more time and this time I'll push myself to reading more than I used to read. Well I did it :). WOW the feeling that makes you fly out of this world is Indescribable! And now a book ia a companion where ever I go :D YA was introduced by a co-worker. I always tell her you should be proud for making me choose book than games (LOL). And yes they mock me sometimes because of reading and I feel sorry for them, they are missing a lot here:D
I always get excited when i meet someone and i find out they are a reader as well...its just very rare! So I get all excited and give a really loud "OHHH MY GOSH YOU DO?! TELL ME YOUR FAVORITES!!!" haha people always laugh at my reaction but I can't help it.A friend of mine said he hates most book because they are always the same "Hot guy meets hot girl but they are from different world so they can't be together" so whenever he sees me reading a book he always says "oh is that about a hot girl and a hot guy?" haha
Unfortunately, I can count on one hand the number of friends I have who like to read.That's pretty much why I use Goodreads; here, I can discuss books and the like.
Up to this date my Favorite is Divergent by Veronica Roth. And the Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare (This book really is very descriptive it made live in London during the 1800's!)
