Gracie Most books aren't good enough for me now that I've read Harry Potter. Has anyone read a book half as good as Harry Potter?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

To be honest, the books weren't as good as the movies for me. And yeah, is it just me or do the quality of books just keep getting lower and lower? Like I've had high book standards all my life and now less and less books meet those standards

Aiyana, A PotterWhoLockian totally! but percy jackson is half as good, or so i think, the achemyst series are pretty good...and others i can't think of.

(pardon spelling)

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmm... well, the Percy Jackson series was pretty good, but not nearly as good as Harry Potter. And The Hunger Games was okay. I really enjoyed the Warriors series! It was definitely half as good as Harry Potter, but not even close to as good as Harry Potter is. Do you find that after reading Harry Potter, every time you read a book you think Harry Potter's better than this!?

message 5: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim Mckinstry You just gotta embrace a little variety :) Try some books by Neil Gaiman or Terry Pratchett. I just finished Howls Moving Castle, a good wee read.

message 6: by Edwin (new) - added it

Edwin I'm now half way through the Wheel Of Time series, recommended to me by other Harry Potter readers.

I think it's the other way round. The movies were okay, but many things were left out, making it haerder to follow what really did happen.

Edwin When I was much, much younger, I refused to read the last chapter of a book. I wanted the book to end MY way, and most of the time it didn't when I read the last chapter.

Nachelle Edwin wrote: "When I was much, much younger, I refused to read the last chapter of a book. I wanted the book to end MY way, and most of the time it didn't when I read the last chapter."

Haha, I got a good laugh out of this! XD

Nachelle Oh! As for the question, nothing will ever compare to Harry Potter... buuttt, there are several books that are amazing. I read the Hunger Game series (totally phenomenal)and right now I am reading Dust Lands ; Blood Red Road. Which in it's reviews said it was better then the Hunger Games. So far, it's really good but I don't know about better! We'll see (:

Betty I read Tiger's Curse

The Young Wizards series by Diane Duane.
the Hunger Games. twilight. I have to admit i kind of enjoyed the hunger games better than twilight.

Ascel Kadhem You should read The Fault in our Stars. It is so good and funny. I hardly give any book 5 stars, but I gave this one 5 stars. The book makes you feel so many emotions. I loved it.

P.S. the author is a Harry Potter nerd. ;)

Christina I'm actually not reading anything that's comparable to the Harry Potter series. When I say "comparable", I don't mean that it's inferior; I mean that, genre-wise, it's just too different to compare.

I have been reading Lover Reborn (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #10) by J.R. Ward this PNR series by J.R. Ward, but I really should get back into the high fantasy.

Zkw617 To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a great classic!

Allzz i used to love harry potter books way bacj when i used to be in school, now a days my reading focus has shifted to young adults, classics and horror. right now i am reading the three musketeers by Alexandre dumas.

Madie Percy Jackson and the Olympians The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan
AND i;m waiting impatiently for my Insurgent (Divergent, #2) by Veronica Roth copy

J.D. Field I couldn't find anything I liked after Harry Potter. So I started writing what I wanted to read. Then I realised how much it's got in common with Harry Potter.
it's a in a boarding school and there's a wizard (but only one) and a secret destiny and all...
Song to Wake to by J.D. Field

Could you tell me the title of the book?

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Omg, I went to the library yesterday, they were all checked out. Checked my school library, they were all checked out!

Kristin Hmmm...Maze Runner series by James Dashner, if you're looking for more magic, the Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage is a lighter Harry Potter-ish series, Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull, and the Eragon series.

Tanvi Martin wrote: "Reading books we love is a strange and complex affair. We rush through them, devouring every new plot development and character revelation -- excitedly waiting to see what comes next and, ultimatel..."

:) Yes. It is pretty much like getting over a relationship when you think Nothing or rather Nobody will ever be able to take up his/her place...

Tanvi Edwin wrote: "When I was much, much younger, I refused to read the last chapter of a book. I wanted the book to end MY way, and most of the time it didn't when I read the last chapter."

:D :D :D

Shubham The book and the series Harry Potter is as important as the character, which is what I feel. It would not have been the same without the actions, choices, decisions of Harry's life and that is what the STORY is about..
As with any story, there is never an ending (a story only continues on and on...) And JK Rowling said she might pen another Potter sometime so take some heart!
Now, we are talking about something like Harry potter???
I'm sorry but we are pretty much going to be sad because there isn't anything like that out there!! There is only one Potter series, and everything is just everything else!!
There will be books of the same or nearby Genre but Harry Potter is a unique, special thing; happened to all of us owing to our good fortune.. There might be something of the same genre (mythical, magic, etc..) which maybe explains why all the people suddenly having high regards for Twilight, Vampire Series, etc.. But nothing like Potter!!!

Catherine hunger games, delirium, pandemonium, hex hall series, unearthly series, divergent series, percy jackson series

Adam For me, it was The Dark Tower that left a vaccum that I tried to fill with Harry Potter and The Inheritance Cycle and even (laughably) The Twilight Saga. So, I'd give Stephen King's The Dark Tower series a shot. And hey, there's seven books! And if you're looking for something with magic and dragons, there's The Inheritance Cycle which is pretty dang good. *edit* I don't know how I could ever forget to mention Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Yes, it's a graphic novel series. But it blows Harry Potter out of the water, hands down.

message 29: by Izzy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Izzy Rey Harry Potter is a well written series. The language is accessible but not condescending, the plot is interesting and forward-moving (never a dull moment) and the characters are very well built. I am not a sycophant, not for this series. Dostoevsky, Henry James; those authors I will venerate.
What to read next, considering I generally abhor fantasy and sci-fi? Tolkien
is as far as I'll ever go in this realm again. Want vampires? Read Byron. Reading modern fiction, for the most part, is rubbish.

♥ Alexia -Team Malec ♥ I think i might have misunderstood the question, from my previous answer :) but they are good suggestions if you are looking for some.

-i am currently reading, "City of Fallen Angels, By Cassandra Clare" and "Midnight Sun, By Stephanie Meyer" but they are in no way similar to Harry Potter.

Anna The Maze Runner and Gone series :)

Hannah Christmas I've been trying to read books of different genres, but nothing really matches it. Sometimes I hate the fact that I've read this series. I can't get into any books anymore. The Lord of the Rings is always a good series to start after this.

I picked up Stephenie Meyer's Twilight after I finished with Deathly Hallows.

Aiyana, A PotterWhoLockian twilight is awful, personal opinion.

A little of both.

Khira Azhed still harryPotter.. ;)

Aurora The Alchemyst by Michael Scott is probably the closest to Harry Potter that I would recommend. Although the name is the same, Nicholas Flamel, it's totally unrelated to HP in story line. I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is also good. It's Greek mythology. There are very few elements that are similar in the books other than a prophecy and some special location for kids, but I enjoyed them both about the same.

Isabella (All Da Ladies Luv Leo) Thomas iron fey, maximum ride, hunger games, warror heir, percy jackson, fablehaven, etc.

message 44: by Plethora (new) - added it

Plethora Other series I've enjoyed since HP, some of these aren't done being written yet and some I haven't had a chance to finish what is out. You can't keep comparing, you have find a different love of a new series/book:

Fablehaven by Brandon Mull
Michael Vey by Richard Paul Evans
Matched by Ally Condie
Portal by Imogen Rose
Destroyers Series by Holly A. Hook
The Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan
The Gideon Trilogy by Linda Buckley-Archer
Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan
Witch & Wizard Series by James Patterson
and so many more...

Elizabeth Day Let me just say this.... I had the same attitude. I read books that were all amazing, just none as good as Harry Potter. Harry Potter continued to be my favorite. Then I read The Hunger Games. I loved it and thought it could be a favorite too. I felt like a traitor; I couldn't have a favorite that wasn't Harry Potter. But I now realize it's okay. Harry Potter sometimes might mean more to me; that's just the way it is, I think. But the Hunger Games are also my favorite. (Or at least my second favorite.) :)

message 46: by Jade (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jade I really enjoyed "the keys to the kingdom series" it starts with mister monday and works its way through the days...its good and the ending is interesting as well.
The mortal instruments, as mentioned before, isnt bad. But i prefer its prequel, the infernal devices. its set 200 hundred years before TMI, in victorian london (which makes everything better), the characters are lovable and the story is captivating.
Gone with the wind is a big thick classic, but i love it, one of my absolute favourites, although all my friends have resisted my attempts at making them read it...

Hayley Em Martin wrote: "Reading books we love is a strange and complex affair. We rush through them, devouring every new plot development and character revelation -- excitedly waiting to see what comes next and, ultimatel..."

This basically sums up everything I've ever felt about books and reading. I can't believed you were able to put that all into words. Beautiful.

message 48: by Hayley (last edited Sep 28, 2012 04:25AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Hayley Em I think we're all just looking for something special in a book. Harry had magic, and a world unlike our own, and although there is unlikely a page outside the world of hogwarts that can come close to the magical world, i still think there are other books out there that have that something special. You just have to find them.

I liked The Hunger Games, like many, many other people, because it showed me a world unlike my own. It caused me to think about what ruins our world may one day be left in. That's what made it so special, so captivating to me anyway.

Similarly, The Mortal Instruments had me turning page after page eager to find what would happen to the characters I admired. The series was so different to Harry Potter, and yet I still found it enjoyable.

To sum up, I guess you can't just keep looking for something that is like Harry, because you won't find anything without feeling disappointed. So, saying this...try looking for something new! A new genre! I went from Fantasy to Dysotopian to Supernatural and found some great books! I'll list a couple for those who are willing to give different genres a go:
Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare Matched (Matched, #1) by Ally Condie Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate Uglies (Uglies, #1) by Scott Westerfeld The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner

Hope this helped and I didnt bore too many of you with my seemingly endless rambling!

Nicola The first book series i read after harry potter was the Tiger's Curse series.
