I feel like all of these questions could, and should, have been answered in the previous book.Still, I haven't given up on Ms. Lackey yet, so despite the diminishing quality of her books recently, I'll still get this one and read it.
Reading the Collegium Chronicles has been like watching a (small) landslide gathering momentum. There's a sort of fascination, a sense of 'how bad can it REALLY get'? On an landslide scale of 1 (unsteady footing) to 10 (Terry Goodkind/ Kevin J Anderson), the Collegium Chronicles gets a 3. What's frustrating is that some recent books are very good, like DEAD RECKONING, a very, very new voice for Lackey. Just to make it clear, I do enjoy Lackey tremendously. Perhaps easing off on the number of releases every year (which are impressive) might help to bring back the Misty we know and love!
Having read this series, I find I cannot agree with the harsh ratings you guys have given this series. Although they were kind of long reads with plenty of descriptions about almost everything, Lackey still provides an intriguing read that keeps you guessing until the end. I am one of Mercedes Lackey's BIGGEST fans... if you couldn't tell.
Ivory, have you read some of Lackey's older works? The Arrows trilogy, the Vows & Honor duology, the Mage Wars trilogy? I can speak only for myself, but for me, the Collegium Chronicles fall far, far short of the mark that Lackey set for herself with those books back in the '80s and '90s. Her plots used to be very tight, without the rambling, irrelevant descriptions of minutia that characterize this series, and she used to be able to deliver a complete story in each book (rather than these weird cliffhangers and lack of plot movement that this series features). That's why I've given these books such harsh ratings. You said, "Lackey still provides an intriguing read that keeps you guessing until the end," and that's part of the problem. Besides the fact that she left us guessing as to how many books are in the series (having traditionally done trilogies, and never given any indication that this would be different), we're four books in and still guessing as to most of the major plot points. This whole series so far could have been condensed into two books and been much better; that's pretty much the crux of the issue for me.
I used to be one of Mercedes Lackey's biggest fans, and I'm glad to see that she still has readers (like you) who are happy to read whatever she puts out. I still count her earlier works among my favourites, and highly recommend them to new fantasy readers. Based on this series, though, I won't be automatically buying any of her new works - I'll get them from the library, if I read them at all.

The heck just happened?????? I understand the book and i now have my questions answered *somewhat* but the HECK just happened!!!!! this book had just filler and some story line!!!!! GIR face!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This book could have been shorter or even a long novella!
