Chad | 7 comments I was just wondering if anyone had a theory oh how a human like race without sexual reproductive organs. Started on a world light years from earth.

I think its a form of AiGenisis, a tech evolved being (AI) trying to create humanity in its own image. To learn how to evolve itself. much like how we use AI and robots to learn about our own path.

Rik | 777 comments I can't remember if I had a theory the first time I read it or not as it was 20 years ago and I've since read the whole series so I know the answer to your question. I can't remember where the answer comes but its probably in the 2nd book somewhere.

I will say this though: your kind of thinking along the right track to some extent.

Peter (wordcaster) | 25 comments I was under the impression that being reborn with the cruciform gradually depleted their sexual organs. Did I make that up or was it in the text?

Basically this is it. Being born again and again eventually turns them into mindless, sexless imbeciles. The real mystery is the cruciform, its purpose, and how they got there.

Chad | 7 comments see i thought that at first,... when alpha died he was ever so more retarded. But I presumed it couldn't do that much damage to the body, plus the Basilica and trails were worn.

But the tracks could be another race i guess before them.

I think its odd the writer used threescore and ten - 70 to describe a race that doesn't die when in the bible they talk about human life expectancy using the same number, using the New King James version.

psalm - 90:10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

Really? Interesting. On a side note, I spent a while staring into the word 'score' and trying to remember if it did indeed mean 'twenty' like I remembered from a long gone high school English class. It was a relief when I realized I was correct when the book said 'seventy'.

I agree with Peter, I thought it was at the very least implied that their immortality comes at the cost of reproductive organs, which made an awful lot of sense to me.

Maryanne | 8 comments Was I the only one that got the idea that the Bakira _are_ the crash survivors?

Thoughts?

That was my impression, as well. As Rik said, dying and being regenerated by the cruciform gradually made them into what Father Dure found.

Chad | 7 comments Ok, my only problem with the crash survivor theory is that again everything is soo worn down. it couldn't have happened in 300 years.

The fact they call themselves the threescore ten, which is an old English saying 3x20+10= 70. That would have been something they lost in regeneration. but the fact that the exact phrasing for 70 is in a bible verse about human age limits. its got to be more them ship wrecked survivors

I thought that most of the fathers early theories where wrong and presumed the same about the ship wrecked theories.

I don't remember how, but some one in the book said so. I'll look for the quote....

The only part i can find is where he finds the ship. and for all we know the threescore and ten killed them. but most likely your right they are survivors. i think i was reading stuff between lines that really weren't there.

William (uuschwartz) | 26 comments I had the same impression (that they were the survivors). It does say that the path/cathedral are far older, so we can assume that other races have worshiped there - if you take the number of symbiots in the cave into consideration, then a great number of them. I just kind of assumed that the Shrike had something to do with their replacement by the threescore + ten.

Also, that psalms tie in is fascinating!

OK, looking for quotes in ereaders is a pain, but in the second book, they quote the story of the first one saying that the Bakura were the survivors of a spaceship accident.

Diana | 8 comments Also weren't there 70 people aboard the ship? Seems like a pretty big coincidence..

Mark Catalfano (cattfish) And now that they all got nuked is the priest going to somehow re-form all 70 colonists?

Ouch...
