I still have like 7 books to go by Jan 1 to make it to 50!! Anyone else feeling the heat? Are you giving up, changing your goal, or trying to cram it all in? I think I'm going to have to go with novellas to make it!

Try graphic novels, too, if you can't get your hands on them, from the library or wherever else. I recommend Jason. It'll take a half hour to read his books. Word of warning, though, he can be a little bleak, a little, uh, cynical. Good luck!
In the spirit of David Sedaris I will say, you can do it, Kate! Reread some Dahl. Always rewarding and short.
Ha ha, the last thing I finished was a graphic novel. Dahl IS a good idea (as always)! I also picked up a few juvenile-level novels.
I was realistically thinking I'd hit 80 this year. For some dumb reason, for #78 I started reading Dostoevsky's, The Idiot. I think it will end up being the third or fourth book I finish NEXT year. Oh well...
Mary Todd wrote: "hmmm...I'll refrain from the obvious and not mention the title"Yeah, I know, I know. I was thinking the same thing when I wrote that... :)
It's pretty darned good though. I have avoided Russian lit. for my entire life and I am now wondering why.
I was 4 books short this year, but I am darn proud of myself. In the past I have never kept track of my reading but probably only ever finished 10-20 books in a year. I'll try again for 50 next year :)
I was starting to feel pretty down a week or so ago because I thought I couldn't make it, but then I remembered I had several days off from work to read, read, read.Anyway, I just finished #50 about 20 minutes ago!
Congrats to all who hit 50 books in 08! I am officially giving up for 2008, having completed only 43 books. I have never kept track of my yearly reading list either. Turns out, I don't actually complete a lot of books I start reading, particularly the ones assigned in my history seminars. Oops! But I am ready to start afresh with high hopes for 2009! Hurrah!
Jessica, I didn't make it either - unless you count started and unfinished ones! Interesting exercise. I'm so gonna make it in 2009!Cheers,
Kate
Good job anyway! (Personally, life is too short to read books you don't love, good for you for not settling for mediocraty)
Kate and Jessica, you are still loved. I think the bigger picture is that you have a significant number of books read in a year's time. Congrats.Becca-Congrats. Just in the nick of time too :)
I agree about the life is too short comment. (I usually say "life is too short to read bad books." With the understanding that "bad" is utterly subjective.I also abandoned several books along the way (*counts*)--at LEAST 5. And there was at least one I shouldn't've bothered finishing.
I find I read faster overall when I abandon the bad books sooner. There was a month when I kept trying and trying to read Conquistador (which I still might pick up again sometime)--or rather, I kept avoiding and avoiding reading it. I think I read only 3 books that month.
I feel your pain!!! I was working towards 50 just with a friend (who did make it to 50) without even being in this group (I just joined today). But sadly, the year was over so fast and I had only made it to 41!!! So close yet so far... But think about it- 41 or 43, that's still WAY more than most people read in one year!
For some reason I chose Don Quixote as my 50th book for the year. It was a great book, but 940 pages combined with time pressures in December equals me not finishing. I actually finished it on the 2nd of January, but I'm still counting it as my 50th for 2008. Cheating? Probably, but who cares, it's my list dammit!
