Lobstergirl Done.

Thank you for taking care of this. I didn't know a super wasn't needed for these kinds of things. I do not know how to merge an author like this without losing any data. Or I'm scared to do it to risk losing any data...!

There is another big author William Henry Giles Kingston that I was working on last night (his profile should be W.H.G. Kingston but since over 100 works were already under the full name I was changing them to combine &/or list all of his works together) but now I see that he is also appearing as W. H. G. Kingston (with spaces) & both have a profile (one with a picture)!
I'm happpy to keep working on his works but his profile needs to be merged - please, anyone?

Lee (of Shalott) | 184 comments Could someone please reassure me with merging an author that no data from the un-kept author will be lost. I want to change James Humes to James C. Humes since most of his books seem to have the initial. Someone has already created a biography for both variants.

http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

Yeah, I do worry about merging this myself since James Humes has 90 reviews I don't want to mess with. Thanks anyone for explaining.

Lobstergirl, you were faster than lightning!

Lobstergirl Pick which author name you want - going by either most # of books, or which is more correct (according to title pages and such). If the other profile has more data in it, or any data, copy that data into the profile you've chosen. Then go back to the profile you didn't choose and edit it - e.g., by adding the middle initial. That will prompt the system to ask you if you want to merge the profiles. You say yes. If you do things in the opposite direction, and merge into a profile that has no data or less data, you lose whatever data you didn't copy over.

message 10: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl Sorry, did you want to do that yourself?

Thanks very kindly - I appreciate the explanation (& for your merging the author variants). :)

message 12: by Lobstergirl (last edited May 24, 2012 09:52PM) (new)

Lobstergirl If one profile has vastly more data, like a long biography, birthdate/death date, a photo, etc., it will save you time to pick that as your default profile and merge into that. Then once there's only one profile, you can edit the author name by inserting a middle initial or whatever.

Also, chances are that a librarian who has made the effort to add all that data will have chosen the correct author name, too.

Lee (of Shalott) | 184 comments Lobstergirl wrote: "Sorry, did you want to do that yourself?"

No actually I am relieved you've done it. I'll have to muster some fortitude before attempting it myself on an author with so many works.
Is there a way to undo a merge in case something goes awry? Say, on my librarian edits page with the Undo clicky?

message 14: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I'm not seeing an "undo" link on the author edits page, the way there is one on the book edits page. I'm guessing that means you can't undo a merge although I don't know.

Roman Kharitonov (refaim) | 30 comments Would someone please merge (not combine) these books?

1. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/65... to http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12...
2. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15... to http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/27...
3. http://www.goodreads.com/book/edit/15... to http://www.goodreads.com/book/edit/27...
4. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/27... to http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15...

These are not alternate editions nor reprints. I do not know how the merge works but please do it keeping second book in each case.

Thanks.

vicki_girl | 2764 comments Items 2 - 4 have been merged.

Item 1 is a rescue edition. There are still imports going that may provide more information on these items. We are not deleting or merging them yet.

message 21: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Raymond | 13 comments I wonder if these three should be three or just one, ISBN is not the same but it's the same publisher, same cover, same number of pages (for two of them and it's quite close for the third), and it's only been like two years since it's first appearance. Does it make sense to have all this book pages?

2 editions where fine, 1 had a truncated ISBN13 of another edition in the ISBN10 field I merged this one

message 23: by Daniel (last edited May 27, 2012 11:07AM) (new)

Daniel Raymond | 13 comments Thanks.

Of the two remaining there is one that is 1Q84 Murakami's book according to it's ISBN (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10...), yet the other one's ISBN refers to another book that has 1Q84 as part of it's title but it written by an author called Masaya Nakahara (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10...).

This should be in the GR Author needs merging thread, only rivka (GR Employees can merge GR Authors)

Amara Tanith (aftanith) #24: No author merge necessary; the book was just attached to the wrong Michael Parker. Fixed and now combined.

message 27: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Raymond | 13 comments So... http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10... is not Murakami's work, it needs to be separated from the rest of the 1Q84 editions.

Can somebody help? thanks

message 28: by Amara (new)

Amara Tanith (aftanith) Someone seems to have changed it to Haruki Murakami's 1Q84 back in January; I've reverted the changes and separated the book. (But it didn't need a Super--you could have done it yourself with the "separate" tool, which you can reach from the "Other Editions" page.)

message 33: by Cait (new)

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments Lindsay, they needed to be combined, not merged, and any librarian could do it.

Lindsay (itwasatrickpie) | 5 comments Ah, sorry, my mistake! I was confused by them both being individually listed in the same series.

message 35: by Roman (new)

Roman Kharitonov (refaim) | 30 comments Could a superlibrarian please merge some books?
* this book to this book
* this book to this book.

There are only one edition (and ISBN) for each of these books.

Thanks.

Another option is to merge the author profiles to the one with the correct/most data (say if one is empty and the other isn't), even if it is the INCORRECT name. Once they are merged, you can then go in and change the name to the correct one. This saves time copy and pasting.

message 38: by ferrigno (new)

ferrigno Hi, I'm adding manually the book

"Carta per musica"
by Enzo Siciliano,

but GR tells me that a book with the same ISBN already exists, having title "Unknown Book 9706822". The ISBNs are:

8804527668
9788804527664

(I'm new, have I posted it on the right place? Thanks)

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 106 comments Hi Andrea, technically, no, that doesn't belong in this thread, but don't worry about that. It would have been fine to start a new one for this issue. (Just so you know for the future.)

Carta per musica

I changed the title of the unknown book to Carta per musica. If you have any other changes to make to that record, feel free to drop me a message and I'd be happy to take care of it. (Edit: I also merged the existing record and the edition you created, and then deleted the extra one.)
