ABANDONED. YA - Fiction - Boy goes on class trip to Toronto and makes a new friend

It's a story, about a boy, I believe was 14 or 15 and possibly named Alex, who had a really strict father. I think they were from Halifax, and his father finally agrees to let him go on a class trip (something about a play?) to Toronto. When he's there, he meets a boy in the bathroom who tries to sell him marijuana, and they end up becoming friends. Alex is intrigued with this new kid because the idea of selling drugs, or doing things that could potentially get him into trouble, are things that he would normally never do, because his father is so strict. But then, Alex starts getting into trouble because of his new friend.
The part that sticks out in my mind the most is that, Alex goes to his new friends house, and the sheriff shows up to bust the friend for growing and selling marijuana. They both run out to the garden where he is growing marijuana, and they start to pull them all up, and hide them in the woods. The sheriff comes outside, but they've already hidden all of it, so they get away with it.
But towards the end of the book, Alex ends up covering for his friend, and getting sent back home from his trip, and he gets into a lot of trouble with his dad. I read it about 10 years ago.
