I've never done one for my books, or bought a book because of one, but I'm an old fogey. It will be interesting to see what younger people think.BTW, the adult group just did a big marketing survey in which this was one of the questions too. So we should soon have some data on the adult side. I wonder if there's a generational difference.
I'm one of the people who took the survey and checked "Book Trailers? There are book trailers?" Now that I know they exist, I think they might pique my interest in a book, but I still wouldn't make a purchase without either reading a sample or reading reviews.
The M/M group just did a big survey on what people use to choose the books they read. Bearing in mind that this is mostly an older audience than for YA, the question about Trailers got (out of 700 responses): Question 26*
Do you watch book trailers?
All the time....3.69%
Occasionally....45.45%
No..............39.91%
There are book trailers?..10.94%
How effective are book trailers as an influence for you to purchase a book?
Very Effective....28%
Effective.........9.66%
Neutral...........36.36%
Ineffective.......18.75%
Very Ineffective..20.03%
I didn't know there were book trailers....13.92%
I think that book trailers are great. I think they are pricey to have done but I think it does a lot for a book. Look what a trailer does for movies. Like everything else, if the trailer is good it will help your book. I think it gives your book another spin and draws people in. When I find a price I am comfortable with I will do one too. Book trailers really don't "sell" a book for me. Typically, I look them up out of curiosity for a novel I've already read. They don't seem that effective to me...maybe even a bit counterintuitive? But I have nothing against them. I think if they're done well, they can be neat, just not a very effective marketing strategy.

Kaine did his own for Dawn of Darkness, for example. It's nicely done but I'm not sure it would influence me to buy the book without other info, and I'm not sure how readers would find the trailer if they didn't already know about the book in the first place.
When Hollowstone came out, I hadn't planned on doing a book trailer but when my publisher asked me about one, I created one for the novel. Thankfully I have a background in art and animation. I'm very pleased with the results.I think if they're well-done they can help. Is it worth spending a huge fee on to have, imho no. But if you know someone who's a gifted video editor and can whip something together for you, I say go for it.

Book trailer are hit or miss. Personally, I don't care to watch them, but I love to make my own and am working on one for Snapshots and I made one for Being Human that instantly got me a sale and satisfied reader. So I'd say it doesn't hurt to have one.
I personally only watch book trailers if I have an urge to know what the book is about but mostly I don't bother with the book trailers.
