Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments The Baker Street Blog has a really great question:

If you could keep one memento from the canon, what would it be?

There's a form after the link. The blog continues:

You are given the chance to receive and keep one (1) memento from any of the stories of the Canon. For example, you could ask for and receive: a pipe used by Holmes, the Persian slipper, magnifying glass, or any token of appreciation given to Holmes; any item used by Watson, such as the tin box or his notebook; or you can receive any other item in the Canon -- a Napoleon bust, the orange pips, even the beryl coronet. You must decide which item would be the most endearing to you and why.

Only two rules apply:

1.The item must be from the Canon itself, and not from a pastiche, movie, or other media.
2.You must agree to keep the item for the rest of your life, so you cannot immediately re-sale it (takes away the monetary value for greed purposes).

So fun! Just off the top of my head, I think I want Sherlock's pipe. But the blue carbuncle is so impressively pretty (and valuable)! and in one of my favorite stories.

Listra (museforsaken) | 4 comments Ahhh, difficult question to answer. I was thinking about cocaine bottle, but it's illegal, I think. Other than that, the pipe, but it's already taken. By the way, can I take the Silver Blaze? Never mind.

I think I'd be happy to have Irene Adler's photograph for these reasons:
* It's something dear to Sherlock.
* It's a token of gratitude from a nobleman, in fact, a king.
* It's a woman portrait, and it reminds Sherlock that some women are smart too.
* It reminds Sherlock that he's a human being, that he makes mistakes and he cannot be right all the time.

But I want Silver Blaze too.

Oooo good choice. I did learn how to play the violin when I was a kid.

John (jkbrown2) | 89 comments The violin would be awesome, but his walking stick would be good too. I would love to have Watson's service revolver.

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments Joshua wrote: "How about the gasogene."

Ha, I totally would want a gasogene. I even eye those newfangled "make your own soda at home!" things.

John (jkbrown2) | 89 comments I don't recall that one. What the heck is a gasogene? Joanna, I've thought about those make your own soda gadgets too! LOL

K Yuan (thereadingpickle) | 3 comments Definitely Watson's tin box (more stories - how can anyone resist?!), although their hat(s) would be lovely...

Stephen Seitz | 37 comments As the violin is a Stradivarius, I'd like to have it, but in the end it would go to the Smithsonian.

message 19: by Rose (new)

Rose (theauthor42) | 25 comments The note Holmes wrote and left for Watson at the end of "The Final Problem." (And if I could have the cigarette case he used to weigh it down, I wouldn't complain!) "The Final Problem" and "The Empty House" are my all-time favorite Holmes tales, and I know I'd most love a memento from those stories. That note sums up everything I love best about Sherlock Holmes -- his pride in his career, his determination to stop criminals from preying upon the public, and his friendship with Dr. Watson. That letter says it all to me. :)

Jo (deronda) | 11 comments Oh, it's hard to name only one object ... even though I would love to own his violin, I think the famous jack-knife would be cool, too. In order to "transfix my correspondence into the centre of my mantelpiece". (Well, if I had a real fireplace.) How neat would that be :)

message 21: by Chris (new)

Chris (cbrunner11) | 33 comments If I could have one item from the cannon I would want the Blue carbuncle. It doesn't say it has to be something Holmes had in his flat just an object from the cannon. I loved that story and read it around Christmas every year. I would gladly keep it for the rest of my life and then will it to my kids, with the condition that one of them keep it or they both donate it to a museum.

message 22: by Stutley (new)

Stutley Constable (stutleyconstable) | 12 comments Of all the various and sundry items I think I would choose Holmes' Sussex Cottage. Either that or his "loaded" riding crop.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

The framed picture of Irene Adler!!

message 24: by Ralph (new)

Ralph Probably the Tantalus. I know, I know...some say it's not in the stories, so it was not on the sideboard. However, if Christopher Morley said it was there, I'm willing to accept he saw it there. Besides, who knew what mischief Mrs Hudson might have gotten into had it not been there? If not Holmes' Tantalus, then I'll have Captain Carey's. And, oh yes...the key too, please.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

It was there!

Ralph David wrote: "It was there!"

A Holmesian after my own heart. I'll drink to that! (Now, where did I put the key to the Tantalus?"

message 30: by Asha (new)

Asha Seth (missbookthief_) His walking stick, of course, which has a miniature him with his pipe. Its just so awesome. I always dream of walking with it, showing it off around.

message 31: by Badgerlord (new)

Badgerlord | 12 comments I want Watson. Just, you know, hanging around my house. And when I'm sick, he can use his medic skills, and tell me stories about his time spent with Holmes until I fall asleep.

message 32: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Does . . . Does Watson count as an object? *laughing*

message 33: by Innaya (new)

So I think I'd pick The Bruce- Partington Plans: would look nice framed in the study.

My dog's name actually is Toby, but I will confess I named him after the children's character who ran away to join the circus, Toby Tyler.

message 42: by David (new)

David Kneale | 1 comments I'd probably go for Watson's Webley service revolver. Only problem is I'd have to get a licence for it.

message 43: by Mark (new)

Mark Sohn (httpgoodreadscommarksohn) | 30 comments Well, I'd like a range of items, tbf; probably Holmes' famed index would be top of the list, in it he keeps all of London's criminal life... but I've always wanted a Persian Slipper-Sod's law we had a place in Tehran when I was a kid and knew nothing of Holmes, but I have a little brass one-an ashtray I inherited from my Father in Law and that is pride of place on one of my new shelves (I had to build a new wall unit to contain the growing collection; not just Holmes, but he plays a prominent part!.)

message 44: by J. (new)

J. Rubino (jrubino) | 310 comments Does it have to be something that Holmes owned? I think the blue carbuncle might be the most valuable item - I have a weakness for that because it's my favorite episode of the Granada series. Or maybe Holmes' emerald tie pin.
