Floating an idea for a podcast. Because there aren't enough podcasts.

Tone (tone_milazzo) Something Veronica and Tom said on SF Signal inspired me, that it's hard for writers to be themselves, get exposure unless they have a book to plug.

So here's what I'm thinking; a podcast where two creative types, usually writers but not exclusively, have a debate on a pop culture issue that neither of them are directly involved with. Topics like "Better movie: Bladerunner or Alien" "Better Monster: Godzilla or Gamera" Those were pretty obvious (Bladerunner and Godzilla) but you get the drift.

How does that sound?

That means they had no hand in it's creation, correct?

I think that's a neat idea. Are you thinking two regular hosts, or rotating hosts for each topic?

If the latter: maybe have a single host/moderator, and then your two rotating guest debaters.

This sounds fun! I can see some great debates coming up: DS9/B5, Mal Reynolds/Han Solo, R2-D2/Twiki, which of two is the best episode of a TV series, or the best book from a series, or the best host from a podcast ;-).

Gordon McLeod (mcleodg) | 348 comments Offhand it sounds great. I'd go with more than 2 though. Maybe 3 or 4 to keep the conversation moving through any lulls from the participants.
Fourcast is a good show to look at for inspiration for something like this I think. The segment structure with the listener prediction, guest predictions and four questions phases work well to keep things moving at a good clip, barring any unusual train derailments.

Tone (tone_milazzo) @Sporadic I was going to host/moderate and keep the conversation moving with rotating guests on either side of the issue. I was going to go with just the two guests but I thing Gord is on to something with a panel of 4, just in case one of the guests ends up being a dud.

@Gord, I'll check out Fourcast, thanks! (oh look, there's Tom Merritt again. Surprise surprise)

I think Tom's on just about every podcast that exists, so no shock there. :) There's something about 3-4 people that works very well for highly talky podcasts. It's true of more than just Fourcast; see also This Week in Google, Triangulation, Film Sack, plenty of others.

I was reading along thinking what a nice idea, UNTIL... Gozilla over Gamera!?

Going back to the topic of the thread: I really like the idea; I have an idea in my head for a indie comic website, and this might fit lovely in the mix! but it might backfire on the authors... to many fanboy out there hehehehe

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 49 comments The Nostalgic Critic does something similar but with same name movies -- for example, the new version of True Grit vs the old version. It's a lot of fun! So I could see this working out well, too.

Brad Munson (bmunson) | 5 comments Love this idea .. I've written a fistful of books AND done media reviews for just under a thousand yeas; even did some radio back in the day. I'd love to be on one of 'em. You thinkin' of using Skype to link the'host' to that week's chatter?

message 9: by Tone (new)

Tone (tone_milazzo) The idea has expanded to a video podcast using Google+ Hangout actually.
I was further inspired by this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature... I like how hangout highlights whoever is talking. It can be held live with an audience and then I can capture the video to upload to youtube, and rip the audio for the podcast.

And I think all these technologies are just out there waiting to be assembled. First I have to finish setting up the blog in wordpress.

And I think I've got a name for it, "Pop Culture Pit Fight"

Love it!

If it weren't video, I'd offer up my services to guest! I have a face for radio, which is why I used to be in radio! ;-)

Tone (tone_milazzo) Well it took me two months of downtime at the day job but I have the site in place:

Now taking applications.
