Chad (chad8504) Is anyone else having an issue accessing the podcast? It won't work on the website or itunes for me. Both say "file not found".

Yes, we're very proud of that word :)

I know they're putting non-podcast items in the same feed. Podcaster app keeps saying there's a new episode when there isn't.

Anne Schüßler (anneschuessler) | 847 comments Well, Sehnsucht translates very well to the English "longing", so I'm not sure whether it's really that untranslatable.

We have better ones, though. Try "Sitzriese" (translates to "Sitting Giant") which describes a person who looks very tall when sitting, though is usual of normal height - pretty much someone with a comparably large upper body.

But of course, verschlimmbessern is a nice word, too, and I can assure you, something that is really used in everyday language, not only because there are so many opportunities to use it.

As for "Jonathan Strange..." I read it and I'd rather not read it again. I didn't hate it, but I had to force my way through it. So, meh. I also agree that since we now have a fixed time frame, this might rule out books with a certain length.

Agatha (agathab) | 130 comments I hadn't heard Sitzriese before, but Verschlimmbesserung is a word I've known about since elementary school. I'm fairly sure it was featured in an episode of an anime over on rtl2...

It was an example in my German class at university for untranslatable words. From what I understood, it's not supposed to mean simply 'longing' but rather a more complex, philosophical concept. But you're the German lady around here, so I'll defer to your expertise. :)

Hai (angelslayer) hmm. do we really want a german dragon though? and these names are getting a bit complex. we should keep it a simple name, and kind of silly willy, in keeping with the nature of the show.

why does it even have to have some fancy name anyway? why can't we just name it:

"Dragon"
"Dragonator"
"Sir Lem-Tron 5000" *cough* *cough*

edit: oops, i thought i was in the dragon name thread...

kvon | 563 comments If you want a taste of exotic languages, I found a book this winter, A Dictionary of Made-Up Languages: From Adunaic to Elvish, Zaum to Klingon -- The Anwa (Real) Origins of Invented Lexicons which has one-two page reviews of both real artificial languages (eg esperanto) and lots of sff languages, including Tolkein, Klingon, B5, Culture, and lots more. It doesn't really get into words that don't translate, but more linguistics. For instance, he breaks down how in Ithkuil the sentence 'iicaree hote ehisa'="My mother's red car may look better than it runs, now that it slammed into that lousy white house you rented. Sorry."

Yeah I noticed that I can't play any of the episodes off the Sword and Laser site but the ones I have in iTunes still work so for the newer episodes I'd check iTunes see if you can see access them there

Unfortunately iTunes does not work for me either. It says "the URL could not be found on the server". It says that for #93, #94, #97, and #99.

Just checked, and 99 isn't available from the site or itunes right now. Weird.

For anyone who wants to listen to #99, I tossed it up on dropbox here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/42004352/S%26...

Steven | 20 comments Mentioned it to Veronica on Twitter sounds like something changed with the site they used to store the MP3s for the show, so I believe Veronica is trying to get it back up and running

Oh, that reminds me of my high school attempt at learning Quenya, which is what got me interested into linguistics in the first place. I still know a few things and I'm rather proud of my knowledge of Tengwar.

Chad (chad8504) Thanks Ala for putting it on Dropbox and Steven for mentioning it to Veronica!

It's an issue with Podtrac... they've changed their redirects. This has affected the entire Frogpants network, AFAIK, as well. I'm waiting on a fix from them before I go back and change every entry, but I'm going to try and fix the most recent at least.

Katie (burgerflower) | 14 comments Awesome podcast, I really enjoyed it! Along the lines of who owns an idea, I would highly recommend Everything is a Remix. It's a fascinating view of how we make progress, and how we can't move forward without sometimes looking back also.

Ah! It looks like Trike already recommended this back in October! If you haven't caught it yet, I'd highly recommend plopping yourself down for awhile and taking it in.

Slow readers aside, most of us read several books and do not always have time to finish such a book in 1 month. 500-600 pages should be about the max. Just my 2 cents. "

+1. I'm hoping I'll be able to make it through Hyperion before the wrap-up.

Let me second this. Thanks again for giving a podcast wrap-up. It was much appreciated by this long-time listener and semi-lurker.

my best buddy and I made absinthe in his home still with triple the recommended wormwood, but kept it at 80 proof, after overindulging, and ok, having a little caniboid assistance, what I experienced were auditory hallucinations, ie little gnomes were whispering to me from the ivy as I walked home from his house to mine.

Veronica, you were wise to not mix wine with absinthe, what you should mix it with is champagne.
