R.J. Askew (rjaskew) | 855 comments So, was the London Book Fair worth the visit? Yes. If only to see the Indie Collective's stall. To become a member you need to have published 10 books. I suppose this suggests that hyper-activity is a good thing. I came away with an armful of freebies, too. They are all 6x9" format. Hmm, maybe I should review my liking for 5x8" book format. 6x9 books feel more like books on management theory than novels to me. Also, all the covers had a generic feel to them. Not a one of the covers on the stall really bossed my eye. But then I have a problem with covers. I noticed a couple of other things which will prove useful if I ever go for a pbook offering. Needless to say, none of the agents I tried to get face time with responded. Not that I expected them to.

R.J. Askew (rjaskew) | 855 comments Tweeting again after a 6-mo layoff. Pointless to resume of course, but I'm having one of those regrettable lapsess. The 1,200 word blog I'm tweeting into is - even by my standards - the biggest load of bowlocks ever. Luckily no one will read it. Not that I have a reputation to be damaged anyway. Excuse me while I take myself off to administer a little light self-flagellation. It's cheaper than Madam Whiplash. And anyway she's barred me from her emporium as - she says - I moan far too much. Personally, I reckon her refusal to do business with me is some kind of intensely cunning domination gambit of the kind that temperamental chess grandmasters routinely deploy.

September Again

R.J. Askew (rjaskew) | 855 comments A new story will be out from me tmr, Monday 5th of May. IN THE ROOM WITH THREE DOORS. A 23,000 word novella, set in London and Hampshire. 3 kids escape everything kids want to escape and find a better way down among the watercress and nightingales. Just two sweet verses in this one, with a little guidance from John Keats. And to keep you interested there's a strange little menage a trois at the heart of matters. And a death. And a desertion. And is that the Celtic hippie woman looking over the meadow at us? IN THE ROOM WITH THREE DOORS on Amazon tmr. *bows*

R.J. Askew (rjaskew) | 855 comments This song helped me to write my new story .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDkKyB... .. the lyrics to the song stir me. And I love the passion of Stevie Nicks. The lyrics have a hold over me, as does the name of Rhiannon, the powerful white witch of Celtic legend. 'Will you ever win, Rhi-annnnnnn-on, Rhi-annnnnnn-on.' The Rhi of legend is a strong-willed, other-worldly woman. I love everything about her. She exccites. How would her modern equivalent be? 'Rhi-annnnnn-on, Rhi-annnnnnn-on.' Shall we all to Avalon? Shall we escape the tyranny of fact based reality for a jaunt into older dream states? My Rhi will be out on Amazon on Tues May 5th. Look for IN THE ROOM WITH THREE DOORS please. Txs.

R.J. Askew (rjaskew) | 855 comments Profound THANKS to the kind reader who spotted the literal in my IN THE ROOM WITH THREE DOORS pitch. Tis fixed.

R.J. Askew (rjaskew) | 855 comments IN THE ROOM WITH THREE DOORS has just left the nest, like a fluffy newbie fledgling. Novella, 23,000 words.
Coming of age story of escape from London. Three kids in a menage a trois find a better way among the watercress and nightingales of Hampshire.
Fleetwood Mac's Rhiannon and John Keats' ODE TO NIGHTINGALE feature throughout, as do elements from L'MORTE D'ARTHUR. Death, strange love, fortune seized, desertion. And beauty, there has to be beauty.
And so to Avalon! or should that be Brazil and the World Cup? Will Rhiannon the fey win?

Here's the pitch .. not exactly a conventional pitch, but who cares? The last two lines are all ...

~
A TAPESTRY HEART
~
Fly with Rhi to Avalon found,
Where nightingales sing in packs of three,
And green watercress gleams
In the light of old dream-versing moon.
And you are young silk for time out of mind,
In a vision of love made pleasingly free.
And your life is a yarn in a tapestry heart -
With a never-ending need, to be read and to read.
~
IN THE ROOM WITH THREE DOORS

By the way THANK YOU very much for tipping me off that the link was a dud. I was tweeting away like a lunatic and scratching my head when the views on the blog kept showing a big fat zero! Watercress is definitely a thing of tasty beauty. I dunno if it is cultivated in Warks though. An excellent place to move to though!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Well maybe I will be a pioneer of watercress there :)

R.J. Askew (rjaskew) | 855 comments ha ha, I'm having some cracking fun strewing tweets around .. I swear, twitter is a gannet colony cubed. Peck, peck, scream, peck. The conditions of life there are atrocious! And, ew! the stink, dahlings. I tweet you not, it's a cage fight. Every second person there is a Buymybook. Excuse me, I feel another tweet dying to scream from me. (And this from the man who owns, actually owns the website called http://itweetyounot.com/ )
